In connection with the takeover I referred to recently, I spent a fair chunk of the morning before hitting the gym trying to establish the cost of my holding for CGT purposes. Over 24 years there have been 6 transactions - 2 initial purchases, 2 Rights Issues, a share consolidation and a random amount acquired in an Open Offer. I am borderline OCD so have pretty good records going way back when, but even I struggled. It occurred to me that I doubt many people - particularly those without an accountant - are declaring gains correctly if at all.

#5665,
If you want. I don't "play" the stockmarket. I have capital that I invest for the long term - some even intergenerational - providing fresh capital for companies via Rights issues when requested and rarely, if ever, selling. Other than one punt (Hipgnosis, sold because I realised pretty soon it was run by a shyster) and small sales to absorb the annual CGT allowance, I can't remember when I last sold a share other than forced by takeover (which a couple of years ago was my 3 largest shareholdings leaving me 75% liquid!). I don't trade. I regard myself as an investor.
