To those of you who know the industry better than I do, would a merger with slightly accident-prone Coral Products plc make any sense ?

I should add that I know nothing.

In H1, the yield on UK 10-year gilts rose from just over 1.8% to about 2%. MACF's discount rate rose 0.2%. The deficit fell over 10%. So far in H2, the gilts yield has risen about 1.0% to 3.0%. This could see a very significant reduction in the pension deficit, with the possibility of a reduction or pause in pension top-up payments.

And with cash-rich income funds recently buying a stake, a share placing to fund any purchase will be easy.

Looks like a good acquisition being considered.

Fair assessment aleman. Undemanding P/E ratio and obviously a solid company which is well managed hence why I continue to hold a stake here. Hvs - I bought in around 20p when the P/E ratio was around 7 and the dividend paying around 8%. So to me when I say easy money I mean the movement from then to now in share price as this movement was a reflection of how undervalued the company was before. Going forward I would suggest that future share movements upwards will mainly be driven by the company improving sales/profits as the overdue market correction has happened now.

Slightly disappointing earnings but underlying cashflow looks okay. A slight reduction in the pension deficit probably matched expectations. New contracts bode well for H2 on relatively fixed overheads. I wondered if the dividend would rise or not. It sounds like we'll get a token increase in the final. Probably worth hanging on to if new contracts will help turnover to grow slightly in H2. Bond yields suggest a further small reduction in the deficit so far.

I have thought for a while that, after a few years of severe doom and gloom where the economy has been talked down (to push through unpopular EU legislation, pension reform and keep wages and interest rates down), that we would see the economy get talked up for a couple of years ahead of the next election. These results seem to suggest that the new-found optimism of our politicians and media and oft-revised GDP numbers may be exaggerating the improvement. The danger is that means we, as a nation, start borrowing to spend again rather than improve the economy by making and exporting more, which would help MACF.

I think increasing optimism will help a bit for the next couple of years but I am not getting carried away. Operational gearing means any modest improvement should still help the bottom line. I could see forecasts being held or tweaked down a touch but decent cashflows should still keep the debt falling and then possibly allow for a little expansion though a new depot or small acquisition. I suppose there is even the outside chance of acquisition by an international operation at this price. Most likely, though, it looks like being just steady as she goes on an undemanding valuation.

Sold some today. Nothing wrong with the results but can't see any significant movements in share price in next few months. Sales haven't grown so will be hard to keep eeking up profits. Good company but maybe the easy money has been made here.

Per previous post, Miton Group have indeed upped their holding. The analyst there is to be respected. Hence the latest price move.

Over to the chartists now.

Looking at the nature of the run of buying this morning, I'd hazard the guess that MACF have been tipped somewhere. Investors' Chronicle, perhaps?

Apart from the improving economy , we now have a very strong board and maybe
things have finally started to stir.

Nice move today.

This one has quite high operational gearing so its share price tends to follow the economy in an exaggerated manner. It looks to just be responding to the stronger economic news of late. I'm quite looking forward to the results, which I'm hoping will confirm the imrovong sales environment and lead to slightly higher forecasts.
