ATI Update from sept 18 (pdf link below) has graphene down as a material to exploit. As i posted recently, cranfield.ac.uk has held an annual graphene workshop since 2017. Last one had stephen hodge and martin ? (Bsi flakes wizz chap!) In attendence.

"INSIGHT_09 – Composites"

"This paper has been compiled to disseminate the findings of an aerospace sector consultation enabled through a collaboration with Composites UK, the trade body for the UK composites industry. The consultation aimed to identify the priority technologies needed for composite material exploitation, as well as the priority product areas for which composites are of interest across aircraft, structures, systems and propulsion components. The paper builds on work undertaken as part of the Composite Leadership Forum’s 2016 Composites Strategy “Lightening the Load” which analysed the cross-sector opportunity for composites, with the outcomes of this paper identifying the priority technology challenges for the aerospace sector relevant to that strategy."

So.... whilst we argue about China, here is a nice photo of the Qingdao MOU signing ceremony to enjoy. Qingdao, the home of Tsing Tao, Double Star and Hisense.

I didn't know the Double Star he was referring to, satellites or :-

Brief Introduction of Doublestar Group
As a 97-year-old company, Doublestar is the only state-owned listed tire company in Shandong Province, and the new chairman of tire branch of China Rubber Industry Association. Doublestar is becoming an international enterprise group with the integration of tire manufacturing, smart equipment, smart logistics (e.g. Robot) and smart cyclic utilization of wasted rubber.

In recent years, Doublestar started a new journey of “Fulfilling Second Undertaking & Creating Doublestar A World Famous Brand”. Seizing the opportunity of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and accelerating the intelligent transformation, Doublestar becomes the first one to found all process operation“Industry 4.0”smart factory in global tire industry, therefore, cultivating three new industries-smart equipment, smart industrial logistics and smart cyclic utilization of wasted rubber.

Owing to innovation and intelligent transformation, Doublestar was rated as the model enterprise of the whole industrial chain of “Brand Cultivation”, “Technology Innovation”, “Quality Benchmark”, “Intelligent Manufacturing”, “Green Manufacturing” and “Service Transformation”, which makes it the only one among all Chinese enterprises to obtain the four national honors authorized by Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in recent five years. It is also known as the "leader of Chinese tire intelligent manufacturing" and the only enterprise in the history of China's tire industry that has been rated as the "National Advanced Productivity Model Enterprise".

For three consecutive years, Doublestar has been listed in the “Asia’s 500 Most Influential Brands”, and the “China’s 500 Most Valuable Brands”; both are the No.1 among all Chinese tire enterprises.

In order to further build a world-class enterprise with a larger scale, Doublestar Group launched the acquisition plan of Kumho Tire in South Korea in 2016. On July 6, 2018, the acquisition was closed. Holding 45% of shares, Doublestar has been a controlling shareholder of Kumho Tire, becoming the world's Top 10 and China's largest tire company.

Great post and background on Aecom business focus

Recently I have been reading about some technology innovations around the replacement of deteriorating bridge structures in the US. Over 280 identified

Essentially using pre assembled replacement structural bridge parts that can be used to quickly replace existing structures. Given the social imperative of transportation infrastructure this is not an elective replacement programme, it’s going to be done

Now that fits the profile for a perfect application for Nanene enhanced concrete structures with longer service life

Consider also bridge structural issues in Italy with the collapsed bridge and recently identified 28 bridges in France all with indication of premature failures before end of their design life

Putting those bridge replacement project opportunities together with the potential of Nanene enhanced concrete from the international leading company Aecom , now that feels like a great opportunity for us

Feeling very optimistic about our future business with Aecom as a partner

"The Electrical Challenge | Sponsored by Rolls-Royce

Electrification is an exciting opportunity to shape the way we all live our lives, and a key element of our strategy at Rolls-Royce. It’s a bold, new frontier that’s beginning to change the way we work and the products we create.

No electrical machine is 100pc efficient; a portion of this inefficiency manifests itself as heat. As Rolls-Royce looks to electrify its products, heat management will be a significant challenge, especially for aerospace. We want to hear your ideas on how we can reduce the waste heat and/or use it to enhance our product performance."

"August 01, 2018 11:16 ET | Source: Great Lakes Graphite Inc.
TORONTO, Aug. 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Great Lakes Graphite Inc., doing business as NovoCarbon Corporation, (“GLK”, “NovoCarbon” or the “Company”) (TSX-V:GLK, OTCQB:GLKIF, FWB:8GL) today announces the receipt and fulfillment of an initial purchase order from a graphene manufacturer located in the United States. The purchase order specified fifty pounds each of two high purity, micronized flake graphite products. The customer has requested confidentiality for competitive reasons.

Senior VP of Sales Michael Coscia said, “Following an extended qualification process with this customer, we are now moving from product trials to purchase orders. They have expressed an intention to work with us in an exclusive supply relationship and we are delighted with the opportunity to fulfill their requirement for high quality graphite materials on an ongoing basis. We began product qualifications with this customer using kilogram quantities and are providing a pre-production quantity with this order. Super i know when we were first looking at india, you mentioned +nanene gains in rubber were found in a video online, giving very good gains versus conventional. I remember finding research by local indian tyre manufacturer going back to 2013 where using graphene oxide gave no better gains than best plastic additives (at that time). As speculated then, hopefully these tyre firms have now seen the +nanene test data and been very impressed by the results, given many will already have test data on record from their own experiments into 'graphene!' Graphene hub link. Best ellis

"Early adopters – benefits in sight!

A spokesperson from the NPL said that early adopters of graphene technology are already seeing benefits, however, to fulfil its massive potential, it needs to be industrialised, which will see the quality and reproducibility of the material on offer increase (due to standardisation), and the price of graphene drop (due to economies of scale).

By providing reliable, accurate and consistent measurement and assessment of graphene, and giving industry the information, it needs to scale up the production and application of the material, this initiative will help to ensure the UK remains a world-leader in the graphene industry.

It will also help to foster graphene innovation hubs across the UK by supporting agile, forward-thinking companies like those seen in Silicon Valley, with a similarly stimulating effect on the economy."

Decided to look back a bit more into the history of AECOM and there is a common theme occurring in the companies that VRS deal with now

and that is to make the world a better place.

If you can't be bothered to read anything else just read the third paragraph below and it will ring some bells.

Industries
Who sees opportunities at a molecular level?

We do! Every day the passionate, tenacious solvers of Ashland strive to amplify the efficacy, refine the usability, add to the allure, ensure the integrity, and improve the profitability of your products and applications.

We do this by combining our in-depth understanding of the structure function relationship of polymers, our global research and development capabilities, or experience in formulation architecture, our broad product portfolio of both cellulosic and synthetic polymers and our relentless pursuit for solutions across a variety of industries.

We come to work with the goal to find solutions to lighten the weight, increase the performance, strengthen the durability, improve the protection, enhance the texture, maximize the results, boost the bioavailability, and intensify the delivery of your products, to name just a few.

We help customers streamline processes, test production methods, decrease total cost of formulations to increase profits and speed your time to market by eliminating barriers. In short, we are your long-term, trusted partner for solving your toughest challenges in applied chemistry.

I would guess that AECOM having grown out of Ashland inc. works closely with them on the materials science and applications

"Tata Steel and Swansea University open new research institute

8 Feb 2018 | Corporate News

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones today opened the Steel & Metals Institute, a long-term research and innovation collaboration between Tata Steel and Swansea University.

The opening marks a new approach to Tata Steel’s UK R&D, with facilities now based at Swansea University and the University of Warwick. Engineers and researchers at the Institute will be working on a range of new materials to meet the emerging need for next-generation steels for hybrid and electric cars, energy-efficient homes and buildings and innovative food packaging.

The Steel & Metals Institute is the forerunner to the UK National Steel Innovation Centre, which will be funded through the Swansea Bay City deal and is due to be operational by 2020.

Today’s event was attended by Bimlendra Jha, Tata Steel UK’s CEO, and Professor Richard B. Davies, Swansea University’s Vice-Chancellor.

Bimlendra Jha said: “Swansea University, together with the University of Warwick, is part of our two hub strategy for collaborative research and development with universities. Integrating this new facility at Swansea with our existing network of researchers at different universities in UK is a stepping stone to our win-win approach to innovation.

“Researchers get real world problems to solve and Tata Steel brings its expertise and resources to give wings to innovative ideas.”

Tata Steel’s ties with UK academia are already well rooted funding  six professorial chairs at the universities of Warwick, Oxford Brookes, Cambridge, Cardiff and South Wales, and Imperial College London while more than 80 researchers work directly for Tata Steel.

Professor Davies said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Tata Steel. Advanced steels research is crucial for the nation, and for manufacturing. This move shows Tata Steel’s long-term commitment to research and development within the UK.”

Ernst Hoogenes, Tata Steel Europe’s head of R&D, said: "Opening this new R&D centre at Swansea University is a major step towards consolidating and strengthening our R&D in the UK. This will help us accelerate our open innovation activities and will lead to exciting new steels to give our customers a competitive edge.

The new centre will ultimately have a combination of metallurgists, product engineers, data scientists, researchers and technicians. Tata Steel will provide more than 40 industry R&D staff to work alongside 20 new Swansea University research staff. The company has also committed annual funding to contribute to the running of the Institute and donated a wide range of research equipment to the University.

At Tata Steel’s R&D facility based at the University of Warwick engineers and researchers will continue to work on new steel coatings, including graphene, as well as other advanced product development."

Mryl

I think it was at the Cambridge investor event where NR explained the strategy.

Wide ranging collaborations big and small in various sectors some of which move quickly and others slowly, building blocks for long term business growth.

There were also the Tier 1,2 and 3 sectors explained which were down to what we could see near term and longer term like graphene enhanced batteries and enhanced aircraft critical parts (which take many years). Non critical aircraft parts can move a lot more quickly.

The collocations announced are no the only ones in play, they have various other collaborations going on too.
