Cazzer - I live in a field with horses so totally with you there. Rather trying to make the point there is a new industrial revolution beginning to snowball. I've followed this guy Seba since 2013 when he was regarded as insane - roll forward 5 years and it's actually happening quicker. See CS comment about owning cars, he's spot on (Seba forecast it in 2013).

Hello pshevlin, I think it depends on the battery type, but some manufacturers recommendations are that the battery needs to be kept at a certain temperature. If the battery temperature drops, then it takes a lot longer to charge the battery >20hrs. vehicles in dealerships/import yards can be sat for weeks without movement and this would be a problem. There will need to be significant changes to local infrastructure to cope with this demand.

frankly the whole idea of privately-owned cars is one whose time has passed. I very much hope that in 20 years (maybe less) there will be AI autonomous EVs that can be hired for particular journeys as and when needed (think taxis but with EV vehicles and without the drivers). Most people's cars spend 95% of the time being unused anyway - if you think about it rationally private car ownership is a ridiculous idea.

Or maybe it will end up that wealthier people who can afford houses with drives can also buy private EVs to charge in them, while povs have to rely on a 'white bicycle' model of vehicle usage.

In the shorter term, I do agree that it's largely a spurious argument - as someone says above, who fills their car with petrol at home? The real issue is recharge speeds at 'petrol' stations - and that's where much improved supercaps/batteries come in...

you will have the charging points at garages...same time to charge as it does now to fill.
500 mpc very similar to now

just a matter of getting the bats right...and maybe not so far off

occults. They will only need to charge their cars for a test drive. If they have a fast charger it will take hardly anytime. How far do you need to go for a test drive?

I'm sure in five years time we will all be laughing at the concerns/doubts we have at present around EVs. The world keeps looking and finding answers to these questions and moving rapidly on to the next. Mobiles will soon be charged up in seconds rather than hours and I'm sure EV batteries will become similar(?) in the future. Suppose we'll have a brick sized quick 50 mile top-up thingumy to have in the boot in case we are caught short (of charge) in the middle of nowhere

Cazzer - you've obviously not watched the Seba video yet, it'll give you the answer to the minuscule percentage of time cars are used, when you combine it with autonomous vehicles etc you actually need a fraction of the cars we have now. Think if tech astroturfing amount of land freed up in cities - seriously mate spend half an hour watching and then come back and post. Be interested to see if your view changes.

You already had plug sockets in your house to charge your phones.
How well do you think they would have caught on if everyone had needed to have electricity installed in their houses first.
You don't charge an electric car on a nightstand.
There are no charging sockets in the street.
Don't misdirect what is a genuine issue.

Tell me about it, when everybody got their first smart phones I was worried that there would be thousands of cables just hanging everywhere ready to charge peoples phonesI was thinking how daft it would be and everyone would trip over them in the street It was my biggest concern

One thing I'd like to know is how vehicle dealerships will cope with having to have all their cars on charge. If a car is standing for too long without charge then this is a problem. So will dealerships need >40 charging stations per dealership? What about the import yards where thousands of cars are waiting to be delivered to dealerships?
Will there be a VRS/Gnanomat/Zap n go truck that drives around and instantly charges vehicles as and when required?

No, no they won't. A huge number of people live in terraced housing and apartments.
You can't have extension leads running across pavements.

Oh really? There are still big chunks of the country that can't get decent broadband, never mind cable.
Get out of a london/city centric, leafy drive/garage heavy suburb and you'll realise that it doesn't stack up.
Who knows what will happen in the long term, but no ICE vehicles being sold by 2040, not a chance in hell.
This country has never made any major infrastructure changes in a 20 year period.
Hell, how long have they been building the crossrail?

Pandar - road charging is going to be the only way, if you follow Seba through to the end we'll all be self generating electricity (assuming you have a roof) so electricity will be unable to be taxed per se.
