Great work serratia. Mind boggling the applications for real graphene - and the case for early adoption is logically strengthened (like concrete) when the gains justify it versus conventional. Better day on here and for the share. See the boys had a couple of long days in brum ? Thx for graft and craft neill n co. Aimo. Best ellis

Well that's concrete evidence

(just getting in there before alchemy does !)

I suppose that knocks carrots out of the ball park!

Great research Serratia. I work in the architectural industry and can see further benefits as a direct result of the points you raise. Strengthened concrete/reduced columns allow for more usable/flexible layout configuration to meet clients brief. Thinner walls creates additional gross internal floor space, great in urban areas where space is at a premium. Reduced floor/roof thickness will allow for extra storey(s) in high rise without increasing the building height, gaining more square footage. The list goes on. I can see architects specifying it for design benefits and contractors specifying on design and build for performance enhancements. Just a case of getting the cost right so it doesn't get value engineered out.

How things have moved on - The Burj Khalifa in Dubai was started in 2004. The ground was a little fragile so they used 118,000t of concrete in the foundations but it was only 4300 psi. They used 960,000t in the building at 3000 psi. AECOM's new concrete for the twin towers was 14,000 psi.
They combated the heat generated when pouring the concrete partly by pouring at night and partly by using ice in the mix. Pity they didn't have Graphene !
Modern formulations would have saved a lot of money on the Burj construction cost which was estimated at $1.5 Bn.

Fest, I'd forgotten Pacers, they were originally called Opal Mints.

But... have you ever put a green opal fruit, and a yellow one in your mouth at the same time? It's a citrus EXPLOSION!And, I DO remember the spearmint ones called Pacers. They were taken off sale in the late 1970s I think.I loved them, and once I'd finished them, I'd eat a whole tube of toothpaste to carry on the experience!

Keep the faith folks.

If some kids appear at the door already with starburst in their sweet buckets, protracted negotiations are going to be in play. 5 kgs of chocolate for an orange or green starburst should do the trick.

Serratia

Aecom don’t seem to do anything small hence any product will be big for VRS.
It was with Axia, Peter Jay and Aecom news that the wording changed to, will implement, will incorporate.

Clearly Axia and Aecom already know what they want it in.

It will come at some point.

Some figures on concrete.

The global market is worth $1.1 Tn using around 50 Bn tpa. AECOM built the new twin towers using 400,000 t of concrete and 45,000 t of structural steel.
So, what ifs -
What if they could double the strength (the paper said 2.46*)? First you might think they could halve the concrete use but it could be better than that as you'd have the same strength concrete but only half the weight to support so perhaps less again. They'd save on steel reinforcing as the pillars wouldn't be as thick. Less weight again. Next up what if the building was kitted out with graphene enhanced polymers in the interior construction ? Less weight again.
I don't know if it's coincidence but tripling the strength from 4,000 psi to 12,000 psi concrete tripled the price. Would the price double if the strength doubled to 24,000 psi ?
When I've launched new products in the past the challenge was to work out the value chain and then try to capture the largest share.
It would be quite fascinating to work out the value chain for FLG/concrete. I don't think it has to be given away cheaply.
That paper showed that most of the strength benefits occur with a 0.04% loading, that's a very large potential market.

Well, I've just wasted ten minutes of my life researching Starburst flavours, and there are more than I thought. From Wiki:

"Starburst has many different varieties such as Tropical, Sour, FaveReds, Very Berry, Superfruit Flavor and Original. The original flavors include: strawberry, lemon, orange, and cherry (changed from the initial lime). The tropical flavors include: strawberry banana, pina colada, cherry kiwi, and mango melon."

Hopefully all coming to fruition soon!

realcool - I think there probably are enough fruits - unfortunately not all of them in the Opal range. So maybe it's only the handful that are nearest fruition get assigned a flavour ;-)

sandbag - Maybe Matt's reference to the different flavours of Opal Fruits and their random occurrence is related to not knowing which collaboration would reach fruition soonest - but one of them has. Perhaps each collab has been assigned a fruit code - and strawberry was favourite but lime has arrived first ;-)
