31/10/2018 21:51 | AECOM Verified account @AECOM Follow Follow @AECOM More For the first time since the 1950s the Palace of Westminster is undergoing work that will result in a smarter, #resilient energy system for 2050 and beyond. Find out how our long-term strategy will bring a reduction to the building's carbon footprint. PARLIAMENTARY ESTATE, LONDON For the first time since the 1950s a joined-up, long-term, engineering infrastructure is planned for the Parliamentary Estate. Addressing the whole estate the work will result in the long term reduction of carbon foot print, reduction in energy costs and better value resilience. Working with the Parliamentary Estate’s corporate officers, AECOM has developed a long-term strategy, which includes an innovative hybrid district heating loop fed by gas CHP and heat pumps that extract heat from the Thames and the London aquifer; enhancements to the site wide high voltage ring; and a new recycled water ring and storage facility to reduce water consumption. This upgrade of the heating, cooling, electricity and water infrastructure will encompass the wider Northern Estate buildings, the Palace of Westminster as well as the Southern Estate properties to provide a consistent standard across the entire Parliamentary estate and deliver a smarter, resilient energy system for 2050 and beyond. | ![]() luckyorange

31/10/2018 21:48 | affc... So did 'modern' concrete ... up until around the 1970's. - the 'Rocks' ... were called 'Plumbs'... Although usually restrained to foundations or mass concrete elements, (rather than reinforced structure) The reason the practice stopped was because the strength of the concrete element could not be verified via calculation.. or testing. as the large 'rocks' .. may have been of lesser strength .. or non verifiable source. Concrete is sampled at the casting stage .. and the samples then tested for crushing strength .. thus the strength of the overall element may be deduced.. .. but that can't happen when a percentage of the element .. has rock of unknown qualities.. thus, because the .. the element, & therefore the building, could not be validated. ... the building could not be insured. .. I don't think Insurance had been invented in Roman times.. | ![]() k mon

31/10/2018 21:19 | Can not see some (if any) modern concrete structures lasting 2000 years.I believe that Roman concrete also contains rocks, compared to Modern concrete containing pebbles.Happy to be corrected if any one knows better...Not paid a visit to Rome yet. It is one of the must visit places before I die...from my list. But dying is not on my list, that can wait ;) | ![]() affc21
31/10/2018 21:16 | Superg Thank you for reply Re victrex and the Calm meeting . Hopefully to develop cost-effective parts for demanding applications in the aerospace industry. Great if something happens as Victrex interested me. I did ask a general question about Victrex at shareholder meeting a few years ago . So excited should anything develop in the future as a massive company , Ff | ![]() forestfred

31/10/2018 21:01 | I went to see the Pantheon dome in Rome last year, after watching a documentary about it. it's absolutely incredible. It's over 2000 years old and it looks like it was constructed yesterday. | ![]() festario

31/10/2018 20:42 | Thank you Serratia for your research on concrete, I would not have thought concrete could be so interesting also.Could it be that graphene enhanced concrete could finally compare to or surpass Roman concrete (as in the Pantheon dome, which I believe is the largest unre-enforced concrete dome in the world) which is more durable and gains more strength as it ages over time, in comparison to modern concrete. That is without the use of reinforcing rods etc.Roman concrete containes volcanic ash and lime, incomparison to modern concrete containing Portland cement (lime and clay).Fascinating stuff concrete, who'd have thought... | ![]() affc21
31/10/2018 20:08 | @serratia you post made me chuckle. Have a look at ASX:EDE it has taken them years to get into commercial trials. They are the market leaders in Graphene/ nanomaterial additive for concrete. | ![]() loglorry1
