Yes, on balance we need America badly.

They baled the whole of Europe out after WW2 under the Marshall plan and we were the biggest beneficiary. It was in their own interest to stop the spread of communism.

Keynes begged and begged for even more cash and at first the Americans refused. They had doubts because of the Labour Government and its nationalisation socialist plans.

In particular HMG needed billions of us $ to kick start the free at point of service NHS. They were being asked to subsidise a socialist welfare state.
In the end they paid up and the rest is history.

The only 2 times we went our own way were Suez in the 1950's. Eventually a furious Eisenhower affectively ordered us out and Eden had to resign.

The other was Wilson not sending British troops to Vietnam in the 1980's.
Some say that was his greatest ever decision, but it finished him. He coUld not attack America's policy because as he said, we rely upon their money.

We will have to stick close to America and at the same time pretend we are an independent country.

I hope that behind the scenes a compromise agreement on Ukraine will result.

Truss will almost certainly confirm the UK 's total support for Zelenky's regime in Ukraine in line with Boris Johnson's previous policy.

Boris Johnson's parting advice of sticking close to America is government policy.

Post Brexit, which some saw as an America vs EU. contest, we really need America as our closest partner. A special relationship on steroids from now on.
It would be unrealistic to claim that we have an independent voice on most major issues. We cannot afford to deviate from America, it has been that way for decades.

So Truss is doing the right thing, whatever her private thoughts are.

I have serious reservation about Zelensky, but in the unlikely event of being prime Minister, I would be forced to support the American strategy.
We are a Vassel State in that respect and have been for a long time.

From what I've seen of Ukrainian refuges they thought they were getting a free pass into the EU and the UK and now they're here they realise the UK and EU are not the land of milk and honey they thought it was is my understanding of why many of them have already or are soon returning home to the Ukraine.
