We hope there are international observers to any referendum.

The Crimean referendum was well covered and seemed above board, no gun held to head as some passionate posters suggest.
The crimean referendum was judged to be illegal because the regime currently running Ukraine did not call it.

If they vote not to join Russia I think Putin would have his excuse to give up and go home.
The problem would be a landslide as achieved in the original Crimean referendum of 2014.

If the result is not recognised he could fully mobilise and escalate the conflict to another level.
and could argue he had moral authority.

Same goes for cfr.org link. Change hxxps back to https. Is Putin screwing with and censoring this site now? Or just loganair??

spacedust. Looks that way to me unless the donbas people are allowed to see the atrocities committed by this monster. Even then Russia will declare whatever result it feels like and swear it's been fair and honest.

Over by Xmas? Could be sooner if NATO intervened under international law as it did in Kosovo. "NATO intervened in Kosovo only after Serbia committed terrible atrocities against the Kosovar Albanians. The Kosovo crisis led the UN Security Council in 1999 to adopt UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which placed Kosovo under international supervision." That would be my solution under human rights legislation.

careful - 17651. "The Russians should ensure that it is well observed, above board and monitored. To be fair to them, the Crimean referendum was."

Are you for real? Putin screws around with overseas elections for fun. What do you think he's going to do with referenda in territories he is illegally occupying??

If a Russian soldier was to put a gun to your head and say 'vote for me or I'll shoot you' - which way would you vote? There will be no independent international monitoring of these illegal referenda. Russia's game - Russia's rules.

As for the 2014 Crimean referendum - Wikipedia: "The referendum was illegal under the Constitution of Ukraine. It is not recognized by most countries, mainly due to the presence of Russian forces. Thirteen members of the United Nations Security Council voted in favor of a resolution declaring the referendum invalid, but Russia vetoed it and China abstained. A United Nations General Assembly resolution was later adopted, by a vote of 100 in favor vs. 11 against with 58 abstentions, which declared the referendum invalid and affirmed Ukraine's territorial integrity. As the plebiscite was proclaimed, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People called for a boycott of the referendum."

The MOEX Russia Index was down nearly 9% to close at a one-month low of 2,215 on Tuesday, the sharpest decline since February, following news that Moscow is moving to annex Ukrainian territory and new measures to cover Russia’s looming budget deficit.

The breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk Republics and parts of Kherson under Russian control are set to hold referendums to become a part of Russia.

In the meantime, the Kremlin wants to collect over RUB 3 trillion to cover for its expected budget deficit, with higher taxes and duties on energy exports set to raise.

Consequently, the heavy-weighing energy stocks tanked 8% on average, with Gazprom falling 11% amid the possibility of steep taxes being charged on record-setting profits this year.

all stock markets are struggling today.
The reasons we can argue about.

Interesting to see the results of an honest referebum
It will expose the bulls*t and propaganda.

xxxxxy banged on on and on about the Brexit referendum with its tiny majority.
less than 40% of eligible voters voted for it.

See the reaction to the upcoming referendum.
We shall see how loathed or loved Zelensky really is.

The Russians should ensure that it is well observed, above board and monitored.
To be fair to them, the Crimean referendum was.

Interesting developments in the Ukraine war recently.

It seems a number of themes are developing.

Putin wants to end war, that seems obvious.
They are organising referenda in the disputed regions. (these will be observed)
If things go wrong, they are hinting at full mobilisation.

Could be at an end within months, if not things will get very serious,

Peter Miles6 HRS AGOSo the Russian Navy is, at least to some degree, pulling out of Crimea while the Russian Air Force has been very reluctant to fly over Ukrainian controlled land. The Russian Army is increasingly abandoning undamaged tanks and other valuable equipment so they can run away.If people weren't dying in vast numbers and a country being destroyed piece by piece I would say it's become a farce but, instead, it's an ongoing tragedy caused by one deluded old man.Somebody, somewhere really needs to stop this.CDChester Drawers4 HRS AGOReply to Peter MilesMessage ActionsThat person is sitting in the Kremlin, he just needs to give the word.Dave Pickett6 HRS AGOMessage ActionsPutin wont give in and nor quite rightly will Ukraine, only only solution, take out Putin, signs are his own people are shaping up for this, sooner the better. The vile pig has caused untold suffering for millions of displaced Ukrainians, destroyed infrastructure, ruined Russian economy, killed 100,000+, committed war crimes, and so the list goes on. How can we have allowed one nutcase so much destructive power? Russia is doomed as a pariah state for years, hardly a success Vlad... Daily Telegraph

23-27 September LPR & DPR to hold referendums on becoming part of the Russian Federation - MOEX down 10% on this news.

If they join will mean Russia will be able to bring in force the Russian army to these areas.

Nuclear fears in UkraineA Russian missile exploded less than 900 feet from the reactors of the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, Ukrainian officials said. Unlike the Zaporizhzhia plant, which sits in an active battlefield, the South Ukraine site is far from the frontline fighting, illustrating Russia's long reach.Security camera footage showed a huge fireball lighting up the night sky over the site, and the shock wave blew out more than 100 windows at the South Ukraine complex, Ukraine's second-biggest nuclear plant. There was no damage to essential safety equipment there, Ukraine's national nuclear energy company said. The source of the explosion could not be independently confirmed, but the strike fit Russia's long-established pattern of attacking critical Ukrainian infrastructure, even when such assaults pose a serious threat to civilians. Russia has battered the energy systems that Ukrainian civilians rely on with artillery and occupied the Zaporizhzhia plant for months..... New York Times
