I'm up +0.194% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.537%).

Best rises: ADM +2.46%, AV. +1.81% and SGRO +1.56%.

Worst falls: S32 -12.57%, WDS -2.00% and BT.A -0.35%.

Bad news from down under set me back today. Insurers were perky.

As it was dry first thing I decided to do some washing. I went out to the line and the drizzle started, and has continiued all day. Supposed to be a ridge of high pressure coming. I shall believe it when I see it.

Morning All.

Quite a few things to sort out on my return to the office, not least an HMRC matter where we are trying to deregister a small defunct business for VAT and their records show we have "an option to tax" in place on a property or properties. The business never owned a property in the 28 years it was trading so I have no idea what they are referring to. Tried ringing them (ha ha) but you can't talk to that particular team so I have had to send an email. I have visions of going around in circles.

Aleman, having just returned from Holland I can confirm that our roads in the UK are a total embarrassment. Interestingly, the car achieved better economy in France/Belgium/Holland whilst fully loaded than it does here with just me in it! OK maybe a bit flatter but that's swings and roundabouts as you gain going downhill, so it must have a lot to do with the road surface. How come a more densely populated country like Holland can have perfect road surfaces even on minor country lanes, when we can't even provide a decent surface on our main M25 ring road?

Morning everyone.

Cloudy and breezy so far. May get the mower out.

West Indies collapsed again but final round at Troon was very good.. Had a morning Thames Path walk. Hardly a soul about and only a handful of boats. Where is everyone ?

Lots of Olympic Games tickets remain unsold.

Good Morning.

Why on earth did the democrats wait for so long to act in what was obviously a futile situation?

I see we have an "AI" tab at the top right of the toolbar!

Good morning. This bodes very ill. UK insolvencies are already running around their highest level since 1992.

The level of firms in 'significant' financial distress rose by 8.5% to 601,950 in Q2 2024 (Q1 2024: 554,554), considerably higher than Q2 2023 (439,815), up by 36.9%

40,613 UK businesses are in 'critical' financial distress, up 1.1% on the prior quarter (Q1 2024: 40,174) and 34.5% higher than Q2 2023 (30,186)

Thanks wllm. I was actually slightly down on the week. Unlike several others I’m still someway off my ATH having had such a poor year a couple of years ago.

wllm, thanks for updating.

Aleman, not sure about a promotion push but a season well away from the bottom three could be on the cards. 0-2 to Spurs today could have easily been a draw on anther day. Some very good play from QPR and a new decent looking keeper in Paul Nardi . Too late in signing our striker for him to play. We've got five new players in now and shipped out a few. Squad is looking very good.

Thanks, wllm. Don't update Gateside or I'll be bottom again!

Topsy turvy weather continues. After uncomfortable heat this morning again, I'm closing windows to keep the cooling evening out as it moves eastward. It's currently 17C in Southport and Blackpool and only 12C in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland.

A month of rapid melt left and NWP still not looking much like opening. Unusual frosty nights and snow are predicted for next week.

Unusual July snow predicted around the Arctic:

Philanderer - They love a good riot in Leeds. There have now been 21 recorded since the first Corn Price Riot in 1735. That includes The Leeds Dripping Riot in 1865 which has a real Yorkshire ring to it's name I feel..

"The Leeds Dripping Riot"?!

"What do we want? Free daily dripping on toast for all working, Yorkshire men! When do we want it? Now!"

Finished the lawn! Waited until the sun went in after a high of 28.7C (after a low of 18.3C) . Collected 19 bags on high setting and still stalling. 2.5 hours in 3 stints. That was hardest ever by some distance. I've also treated the mossiest area. I don't mind moss at all but it's no good if I can't get the mower through it.
