05/2/2020 15:30 | Sir Keir Starmer calls for all-BAME shortlists as he proposes major reforms to make Labour 'truly representative' The Labour leadership frontrunner wants to change the law to allow prospective MPs to be drawn from shortlists of ethnic minority candidates By Harry Yorke, POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT 4 February 2020 • 8:44pm Sir Keir Starmer will push for changes to the law to enable Labour to select prospective MPs from shortlists made up of only ethnic minority candidates if he is elected leader. Calling on Labour to become “truly representative&rdquo The changes would be accompanied by new bursaries for candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and new “Labour Party College” to equip them with a political education and training to develop campaigning and leadership skills. Whilst all-women shortlists are permitted under the Equality Act and have been repeatedly used by parties to increase female representation in Parliament, selection based on race is currently unlawful.... 05/2/2020 15:15 | Minerve: 'I doubt Cheshire Pete could read most articles in the FT and understand them.' Once again thankyou for your kind words. You are right up to a point, I buy the weekend FT and yes some of the articles are difficult to follow but often because of the way they are written i.e. beating about the bush, weasel words rather than clearly expressed arguments. Not completely stupid though and have no problem with the Telegraph or any others. | cheshire pete
05/2/2020 14:32 | Oh dear..... "But of course east Africa remains the hardest hit region, and UN officials are warning that a horrible famine could rapidly develop as a result of this plague. The following comes from Scientific American… Locust swarms of biblical proportions are threatening crops across a wide swath of Africa and southwest Asia—spurring alarm among top international officials. A major concern is famine. The United Nations is warning that mass swarms of desert locusts are endangering food supplies in eastern Africa. In response, officials in Rome mobilized an emergency briefing yesterday in a bid to raise money—noting the situation has a high potential to devolve into a full-blown crisis" | crossing_the_rubicon

05/2/2020 12:38 | Think Bob's in for a shock if we ever divide up Jockish resouces. As the Jockluddites account for only 10% of the population, their only entitled to 10% of UK sea, same goes for the oil obviously. | utrickytrees
05/2/2020 12:26 | I think one of the problems is trying to fill as many pages as possible to justify the price. Weekend papers have more supplements than the local library has sections - gardening, arts, travel, business, sport etc Had to give up buying them because I cant carry them and in any case it's cheaper buying a paper back. At least they all support the plant a tree initiatives :-) | scruff1
05/2/2020 12:20 | Remember the fishing areas are mostly in Scottish waters hence the eu love in . | bargainbob
05/2/2020 12:09 | Pierre I agree wholeheartedly - especially with your last comment the answer to which I haven't a clue. That's how dangerous it is. Even parliament has become little more than a popularity contest rather than leadership | scruff1
05/2/2020 12:02 | Yes scruff, 'reporter' is now a misnomer. They should be called 'story tellers' or 'social media reflectors' or 'ideology propaganders' or 'circulation sensitive story inventors'. The thing is, where do you go these days to get the facts of current affairs? | pierre oreilly

05/2/2020 11:41 | Patient You may be right in some of the things you say about the FT. I agree about the Pearson sale. However, having said that, financial data is becoming a commodity and the FT is difficult to beat on its interpretation of the data. It should still be the serious UK investor's 1st choice of newspaper. I think it shows the childishness and ignorance on here - of supposed investors - to primarily view the FT as nothing other than a Lefty/Remainer paper and for that reason discard it. The Telegraph is full of Pro-Brexit journalism but I still view it as a good paper for company based reporting. Objectivity is one sign of maturity. Not much of it around on this thread. | minerve 2
05/2/2020 11:31 | We have the biggest fish going here in England - he is called Nigel Farage! LOL | minerve 2
05/2/2020 11:30 | When it reported news factually and without too much opinion it was an excellent paper. The change of ownership was no help either. Pearson should never have sold it. Nowadays, with real-time financial data so readily available, it is no longer required reading. That's what it did best - reporting facts and figures. It isn't the influential paper of old. | patientcapital
05/2/2020 11:30 | As I have already proven, my degree is just as good as yours Pierre. Do you want to go through that again and bore the bb? ROFLMAO! | minerve 2 |
