CABIN CREW AT Aer Lingus have voted 75% to 25%, on an 82% turnout, to reject proposals that would see sweeping changes in their working conditions.

The union said that the ballot demonstrated “the need for a new approach from the company, and a new engagement between the airline and its unions”.

A spokesperson for Fórsa said staff "are being treated with disdain by their management".

He accused Aer Lingus management of trying to "antagonise" staff over the last ten days.

The Aer Lingus proposals would have seen reforms for non-pilot grades, which staff said would have left many “in significant debt” to the airline.

The FTSE 100 has retreated amid concerns over a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic after Germany reported a rise in infections.

Germany reported a rise in the R rate, which has jumped from 1.79 to 2.88 in just four days. Any number over one points to an increased spread of the virus and comes after 29 US states reported an increase in their seven-day average of new reported cases following lockdown easing.

Fiona Cincotta, analyst at City Index, said although the number of cases in Germany was low the rise was ‘unnervingR17;.

‘Germany has been relatively successful in keeping deaths low and reducing the spread quickly in the first wave,’ she said. ‘Investors will need this second wave nipped in the bud to boost optimism that a second wave won’t be as devastating as the first.’

Travel and leisure stocks weighed on global indices and the UK’s main market was no different.

Irish examiner this morning - Talks aimed at avoiding widescale redundancies at Aer Lingus are due to continue between Siptu and airline bosses today.

It follows the announcement of 500 planned redundancies at the flag carrier due to Covid-19.

The airline has already announced it was to halve the pay and hours of most employees and laid off a number of staff, including those based at Shannon Airport.

Implementation of the measures had been due to begin yesterday.

The union's Aviation Sector organiser Neil McGowan said the company must allow time for proper negotiations and consultation on the planned layoffs.

Mr McGowan added talks could not take place in a productive way when 200 his union's members were already on temporary lay-off and over 1,000 have had their pay cut

Iberia will emerge from the pandemic with a smaller fleet.

Luis Gallego said, “The Iberian fleet is going to be smaller over the next five years. It is not temporary but structural.”

Mr Gallego, who will take over from Willie Walsh as chairman of IAG in September, says that, as the airline becomes more indebted by the necessity of state loans, it will become smaller.

He added that the airline would need to reinvent itself. As well as cutting its fleet, Iberia is expected to adjust its workforce. Although Mr Gallego wouldn’t provide specific details, he said the airline would adapt its fleet by speeding up the retirement of planes, renegotiating deliveries, and not extending lease contracts on other aircraft.
