Diesel firm splutters

The word on Charlotte Square is that Clean Diesel Technologies is tipping the hat around Edinburgh's financial community, as it looks to do a fund-raising. The Connecticut-based company has been developing catalysts that reduce engine emissions, but is yet to make the real breakthrough promised at flotation in 2001. It had $5.4m (£2.9m) in the bank at the end of September and is losing money at the rate of $1.2m a quarter.

Has anyone succinct views on upside potential. At the moment they seem to be finding it difficult to translate potential into orders and so will keep having to issue new shares to keep afloat.

Arotech tests electric bus with batteries using ordinary zinc

The successful trial is expected to boost plans for commercializing the zinc-air hybrid bus.

Globes correspondent 2 Nov 04 11:15

Arotech (Nasdaq:ARTX) has announced that a test drive conducted with its all-electric hybrid bus using commercially available zinc demonstrated performance similar to that achieved with the proprietary dendritic zinc used to date.
The company said that, corroborating lab results, the bus achieved a range of 133 miles on a simulated city-cycle drive, similar to the range achieved a year ago in a similar test with the proprietary zinc. The system's efficiency has been improved as well.

Arotech's Electric Vehicle Division has developed technology that will allow its zinc-air batteries to use commercially available zinc, eliminating the need for the special zinc used to date. Arotech's technological breakthrough for utilizing readily available zinc is expected to boost commercialization plans for the zinc-air hybrid bus, which until now required heavy investments in zinc producing infrastructure.

"Rising fuel prices increase the chances of this technology becoming a reality", Arotech chairman and CEO Robert Erlich said, "We are now investigating ways to capitalize on this new breakthrough technology."

The electric bus is powered by Arotech's Electric Fuel zinc air technology. Coupled with a pack of advanced ultra capacitors and an energy management system, the hybrid all electric bus has zero tailpipe emissions. Arotech says that an urban transit fleet based the Electric Fuel bus will not only improve the quality of the air - it will also help national security by reducing the dependence on imported fuel.

In recent tests the bus traveled 130-145 miles under typical city bus driving conditions, including stop and go, acceleration and constant speed. The average normal full day cycle for New York City buses is less than 90 miles. The Company believes that all-electric buses utilizing Electric Fuel's Zinc-Air technology have sufficient range to offer a practical alternative to diesel-powered buses.

Arotech is incorporated in Delaware, with corporate offices in New York, and research, development and production subsidiaries in Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, California and Israel.

Clean Diesel Technologies Expands License for Patented Diesel NOx Reduction System; Stationary, Marine and Locomotive Applications Added
October 01, 2004 02:30:00 AM ET

Clean Diesel Technologies Inc. (CDT) CDTI (AIM:CDT)(AIM:CDTS) announced today that it executed a non-exclusive license agreement with Combustion Component Associates (CCA) of Monroe, Conn., for use of CDT's patented ARIS(R) urea-injection system. Under the agreement the ARIS system will be used for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) from stationary, marine and locomotive diesel engines in North America.

"NOx emissions are a major contributor to ground-level ozone and smog," said R. Gifford Broderick, president of CCA, "and we are seeing growing interest in areas such as California, Texas and the Northeast for cost-effective NOx controls to be applied to existing diesel engines. Extending the license with CDT to cover stationary, marine and locomotive applications will allow us to broaden the sectors that we can serve with our ELIM-NOx SCR System which utilizes CDT's injection technology." Broderick also noted that the CDT single fluid return flow injector allows precise control of reagent injection in the engine exhaust leading to NOx reductions of up to 90 percent or more.

"We are pleased that CCA has expanded its licensing agreement to include these applications," said Bernhard Steiner, CEO of Clean Diesel. "CCA already holds a license for CDT's ARIS urea-injection system for mobile diesel engines in on-road and off-road applications, and CCA recently announced orders for 18 mobile NOx-reduction systems."

James Valentine, president and COO of CDT, stated: "We are confident in the ability of our single fluid injection system to serve as the basis for lower cost NOx reduction on mobile and stationary diesel engines. Working with CCA in the U.S. and our other licensees, including Mitsui in Japan, there are over 150 ARIS-based NOx reduction systems installed worldwide. Not only is the system applicable to existing engines, but used together with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), the CDT patented combination of EGR/SCR can achieve the ultra low NOx standards required of new engines starting in 2007. When combined with our Platinum Plus(R) diesel-particulate control system, both NOx and PM can be reduced by over 90 percent from today's level."

Laws to cut California car gases

By David Willis
BBC News, Los Angeles

Officials want greenhouse gas emissions from cars cut by a third
Officials in California have announced tough new regulations to stem the emission of greenhouse gases from cars.
Vehicle emissions are seen as a major contributor to global warming.

Car manufacturers are threatening to challenge the move in the courts, arguing it could raise the cost of motor vehicles by up to $3,000.

California is thought to be the most polluted state in the US and experts say 60% of that pollution comes from motor vehicles.

The state is regarded as the car capital of the US and many of the vehicles that take to the labyrinthine network of freeways are the big ones which burn a lot of fuel.

Schwarzenegger support

State officials have now approved measures which will compel car makers to limit the emission of greenhouse gases by up to a third.

Smaller engines and better air conditioning systems are among the innovations they are demanding.

But the car companies are threatening to challenge the move in the courts, arguing it could raise the cost of cars.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who himself has a penchant for gas-guzzling vehicles, is backing his officials and has pledged to fight any lawsuits.

Many experts agree the only real way of reducing harmful emissions is by cutting fuel consumption.

But by holding the motor industry to account, the US' smoggiest state is taking a bold move which other states are expected to follow.
