The nearby countries are not huge military powers to sustain a long and costly war. IMO it will die down soon, with negotiations taking place once they realise they could get into a worse situation.

Not convinced there Wan. The 3 sides in the battle seem to balance out it all depends how much of the Armenian army can get into the field I think and if the Azeris can cut the supply lines to stop that they may have a win. The NK army at 20 000 men wont disappear that easy in such a relatively small area they just have to find a defensive line to hold but without backup, and more importantly supplies, they will fall. Not cut and dried I think.

There is a deal to be had but I think with Azeris on the front foot in the battle, I believe its hard to be sure, they wont talk until their advance is stopped or they reclaim NK, in the former the talks begin in the latter the war is over. Just a matter of time before the results on the ground play out. Certainly I dont see a mass invasion of Azerbaijan which would be the only concern for AAZ.

Now needs AZER to agree to discuss those,,, but will it,,,, to me they look dead set on settling for nothing less than gaining all their territories back once and for all,,,, whatever the cost...

lets hope a compromise can be reached and soon :-)

192,500 is the biggest trade I've seen for AAZ. Presumably the same buyer/seller as the 117,500, for 310,000 total @ 108p.

Not that it matters - it's already in the price - but wondering whether that was a long termer selling or an investment manager buying.

Quotes from 3 countries making clear their idea where a peace settlement would lead, its pretty obvious what the Azeris want. It would appear all sides however are in agreement to give NK in part, or whole, to Azeris only the Armenians are holding out for something in return. Looks like they are not holding the strongest cards right now and know it.

Iran
They are backing the Azeri case it would appear from this statement 'Rouhani also told Aliyev Iran continues to be ready for conflict resolution through holding talks based on international laws and respect for the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.'

Armenia
Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Tuesday that he was sure Russia would come to its defence if necessary in its conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkey
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu criticised international efforts to tackle the Azeri-Armenian conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, saying they had achieved nothing in nearly 30 years.
Speaking during a visit to the Azeri capital Baku on Tuesday, Cavusoglu said a ceasefire alone would not be sufficient to end the fighting.
“We look at the calls coming from around the world, and it’s ‘immediate ceasefire’. What then? There was a ceasefire until now, but what happened?” Cavusoglu said in comments broadcast on Turkish television.

Good post Lef. I notice only very bullish posts get a number of thumbs up. The worst thing to do is bury your head in the sand and try and ignore any potential bad news. As yet the conflict is not affecting the mine and hopefully it never will. This is a good open thread, all good or bad real news will always be open to discussion.

2sporrans, like everyone else I'm just trying to make sense of a convoluted situation, whilst knowing that I know almost nothing about what might really be going on. My main hope is, that the protagonists realise that they will both be caught up in a greater game out of their control, and will lose out to greater powers if they don't very soon stop fighting. Both sides will need something face saving that they can 'sell' to their home populations.

This "resolution" may well be their wish but it says nothing about what they will do to get there.

Peace talk resumption seems still most likely.

Karabakh conflict must be resolved through restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, says Azerbaijani Ambassador to Italy

“Azerbaijan is the guarantor of security and peace in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan's multi-billion dollar energy transport and infrastructure projects have contributed to the development, cooperation, prosperity and stability to the region,” the diplomat said. “Azerbaijan is not interested in a new war, but will never reconcile with the occupation of its territories and will do everything to restore its territorial integrity, which is absolutely legal.”

"The actions of Armenia's current authorities until today have shown that they have not learned lessons from the past and continue the policy of their predecessors, which led to the isolation of this country from regional processes and its socio-economic difficulties,” Ahmadzada said.

“The Armenian people must understand that regardless of who is in power in Armenia, this country has only two choices, namely, lasting peace, integration into regional processes, development and hopeful future, first of all, by withdrawing the Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories or constant tension, isolation, poverty, depopulation with the preservation of the status quo,” Ahmadzada added.
