09/10/2020 16:53 | I prefer to deal with actual reality in the present. Even before the 90s the Armenians were ovewhelming majority in N-K proper so that doesn't change the democratic balance. If the Azerbaijan's have a better proposal for N-K let them make it and let the people of N-K vote for it. | casual47

09/10/2020 16:41 | casual, so what about all those people who have been misplaced, forced out of Nagorno. Should these people not be invited back first before and self determination takes place. | celeritas
09/10/2020 16:34 | The basic point is this: people are entitled to self-determination. The people of N-K have democratically chosen to not be part of Azerbaijan. That should be respected. The way forward should be to find an accommodation for this. | casual47
09/10/2020 16:20 | s-murray, I suspect you are correct in that the Khojoly massacre is unknown in the wider world, I certainly didn't know about it until this kicked off. There's hatred, fear and distrust all round, much of it coming from the Turkish actions in 1918 against the Armenians, which very probably underlies the Armenian mindset to this day. However, doing unto others that which was unjustly done unto you, doesn't make you a good person, or justify your actions. To my mind it's like a thief caught in possession of something, and having been told by authority just to give it back, they shout "I won't, and if you try to make me give it back, I'll scweam and I'll scweam until I'm sick, sick sick. (for those of you who remember Violet Elizabeth :¬) ) | lefrene
09/10/2020 16:09 | casual47 Are you of Armenian ancestry hence your views ? | goldrush
09/10/2020 16:07 | Erm no, the Azeri's have been on that land surrounding NK for many centuries, and NK itself (which the Azeri's do not want to ethnically clear), is recognised as a separate enclave, but which should be under the civic administration of Azerbaijan. Or that's how I understand it. I believe that there is muddied waters over what is NK and what are the occupied lands to the west and south of NK. Using your analogy of the child in the tent, the child and his tent will be left unharmed, it's his rude uncles and aunts you wish to eject, who seized the whole corner of your orchard on the pretext of protecting the child, whilst setting up their HQ in the child's tent. | lefrene
09/10/2020 16:03 | lefrene, good analogy, but they also killed the cats and dogs in the process in that analogy. I used to work in Baku and every year it would be a big deal in February regarding the Armenian massacre in Khojoly, the Armenians killed a lot of innocent people in Feb 1992, only a generation away so a lot of people was displaced and with lost family members are still living, you can understand the hatred of the Armenians from the Azeris. I notice no one mentions Khojoly or they don't know the history. I think that is the main drive of the conflict, people have never forgotten in Azerbaijan. | s_murray

09/10/2020 15:52 | More like your child has been camping in your neighbour's garden for thousands of years and the neighbour has decided to raze the tent and everything in it to the ground so you decide to defend your child and build a defensive wall from your garden to the tent. | casual47
09/10/2020 15:48 | No point at all in us arguing over it casual47. If you had a neighbour who had simply fenced in part of your garden one night, and then started throwing rocks at you when you decided to take down his fence, despite a court order in your favour, then that I guess is how the Azeri's feel? | lefrene
09/10/2020 15:42 | For Armenians nobody needs to tell them who is belligerent - it's the Azerbaijan president. There is unanimous support for the Armenian PM, even from opposition politicians. If anything this war will have raised his profile. Armenia is a democracy and the prime minister has a mandate for the next several years now. The only way to oust him is basically through a coup or another revolution. | casual47
09/10/2020 15:36 | Naturally both sides will talk their own book, but Russia is unimpressed with the way the new government in Armenia has been looking away from Russia lately. Putin doesn't need this problem on his southern border, he will want the cheapest and quickest solution before Turkey gains too much political advantage. Telling the Armenians that their leaders belligerence has brought on this misery, and removing him will be the quickest route to restore peace,m it might be the most expedient thing to do? It's a guessing game, we mere on-lookers do not even have a seat in the gods, not even on the same street in which the theatre is situated. | lefrene
09/10/2020 15:36 | In any case, they are negotiating and these are the ones who give orders to stop the fighting and thus the conflict. - - - | fuji99
09/10/2020 15:25 | A turkish media outlet pushing a negative story about Armenia's PM. Safe to ignore or be extremely sceptical about. Armenians did not have a revolution in 2018 for Putin to put his own puppet in place. The last thing Putin wants is another colour revolution. | casual47
09/10/2020 15:22 | Yes well done on BUR Dp, like Pogue I sold too soon. For reasons best known to myself I also have shares in LIT, I had hoped for a lift in LIT as a read across from BUR but alas no and they are on the naughty step now. Video: hxxps://www.piworld. | fozzie
09/10/2020 15:20 | Interesting comment, re Russia's dislike of the current Armenian Prime Minister. | lefrene
09/10/2020 15:15 | casual47, that's what one would expect to happen, ie a push to gain as much territory as possible if you think the fighting might be called to a halt. Which ever side is actually winning on the ground, it will be the one wanting to take control of as much land as possible, before a ceasefire allows the opponent to replenish their forces. I just hope it doesn't set off revenge/spite attacks in the hours remaining, aimed at economic resources such as our mine. Having worked so hard and loyally through the covid thing, it would be dreadful beyond words for the workforce to get harmed in an attack. | lefrene

09/10/2020 15:02 | Armenia reporting further intensified bombing of the capital of N-K, they apparently started just as the meeting in Moscow began. We could see the fighting ratchet up even more should a cease fire be close, so perversely the fiercer the fighting the more likely the end is near. | casual47
09/10/2020 15:02 | Ceasefire underway - - - | fuji99 |
