TFC, I find that hard to believe, the "network" is the national grid, capable of transferring electrical power the length and breadth of the country and as long as you don't want to place extra load on the system immediately after Coronation Street then you are probably going to be OK. The key is to spread the extra load to times of low demand as described in the Tony Seba video.

Having said that what we need to extend this to the whole country is some carefully though through and implemented central planning and historically this is something governments have been very reluctant to tackle hence the debacle over Hinkley C. Looking at this optimistically I would suggest that delaying the implementation until it is truly needed means that we are more likely to end up with the latest technology just in time.

I am a big believer that electric vehicles are the future, but....
I hear that London Transport considered changing all London buses to electric, but discovered that there isn’t sufficient electricity in the network. (I have no corroboration to confirm this, it is second hand information). If true, this must be a limiting factor in the adoption of EV’s.

I'd say that a breakout was imminent, apart from two factors.1, whoever is accumulating never seems to want to chase the price.2, Too many PI's and traders in this share, who will create supply.

I note that Ian Cowie did not mention VRS in the paper version of his ST article yesterday, just the on-line version. He did say that he would “review Cowie’s clangers in full again soon”. If he does not get a move on, VRS may hopefully no longer qualify as one of his clangers. I must declare an embarrassing interest here, as it was I who first interested Ian in VRS last summer, which resulted in him buying some near the peak in the share price i’m Sure he’ll be able to boast about his holding before too long.

Makes you wonder where all this electricity is going to come from. In Germany they binned all their nuclear generating power years ago and are frantically building wind and solar capability (unlike U.K. they don’t have the option of tidal power to fall back on). Their grid is going to struggle like ours unless local generation and particularly battery storage is given substantial priority.

Sounds like a job for Gnanomat!

Hew, I can't remember who used to post on here suggesting that hydrogen fuel cells would be a major challenge as an alternative to EV's, but the article seems to make it clear that the major German car manufacturers have now all but dismissed hydrogen in favour of EV, due to the rapid improvement of EV charging infrastructure and increased battery ranges. If only we had the technology to help significantly decrease charging times and increase battery capacity..... I wonder what Gnanomat have up their sleeve????

Graphene aerospace strategy launched

The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and the National Graphene Institute(NGI) at The University of Manchesterhave published a joint paper on the potential of graphene in aerospace.

In consultation with a range of stakeholders, the ATI and NGI have brought together a sector perspective of the benefits of working with graphene and the potential market opportunities available to UK aerospace companies.

Graphene was first isolated in 2004 and subsequently the Nobel Prize in Physicswas awarded to two Manchester scientists in 2010. The two-dimensional material has the potential to positively impact aircraft performance, cost and fuel efficiency.

The safety and performance properties of aircraft could be significantly improved by incorporating atomically-thin graphene into existing materialsused to build planes, while the reduced weight of the material could have a positive impact on the fuel efficiency of the aircraft and, as result, the environment.

In an exclusive introduction to the INSIGHT paper, Sir Richard Bransonsaid: “The potential for graphene to solve enduring challenges within the aerospace sector presents real opportunities for the material to become disruptive, and a key enabler in future aircraft technology. We need to accelerate the opportunity for the UK to realise the benefits from graphene by creating a portfolio of graphene-related research and technology projects which if undertaken would lead to real impact in our aerospace industry.”

The joint ATI and NGI paper was launched at the Materials Research Exchange 2018 by Mark Summers, Head of Technology for Manufacturing, Materials & Structures at the ATI, and James Baker, CEO of Graphene@Manchester at The University of Manchester.

“We will seek to accelerate the maturation of graphene technology opportunities through our R&T programme, in a bid for the UK to remain ahead of the challenge and continue leading on the research and exploitation of the material in aerospace”.

James Baker said: “Major generational improvements in the aerospace sector have been associated with embracing new materials. Aluminium and carbon fibre have seen planes become faster, greener, cheaper with more functionality. Now graphene and related two-dimensional materials can mark the next step-change.

“By incorporating graphene into the existing materials used to manufacture planes, performance properties could be improved across number of key areas. By utilising the multi-functional properties of graphene and through collaboration between industry and academia, there are significant opportunities which can accelerate the next-generation of aerospace technologies.”

The ATI and NGI are continuing to collaborate on accelerating the technology development cycle for graphene applications in the UK aerospace sector – identifying suitable opportunities for graphene and ensuring that the UK aerospace sector can leverage the material’s amazing properties to remain globally competitive."
