Good morning. A hard frost but looks like the sun will be out today.

Churchill China report no usual season uplift in Q4 and more cost cuts (job losses). Their shares are already down 60% over about 3 years - as if we have been in recession during that time. Hornby report more cost cuts. Working age on out of work benefits is already up 2.3m and rising yet they don't understand what's causing it. These ongoing cost cuts will probably add another million over the next year. With those of working age but on non-working universal credit, those on unemployment benefit and those on incapacity benefit at 6 million, real unemployment must be the highest it's ever been yet they look around and wonder why there is so much crime and decay. We could ease the problem by making it easier to get people back into jobs - so they go and increase minimum wage and employment taxes .....

Apparently, I finished up 0.28% - which I'm not convinced about!

Rain all day here, but bright and cold forecast for the next couple of days.

+0.1%. PLUS around +2%.

I thought it would brighten up but stayed a bit murky with high cloud. It warmed enough to melt the inch of snow we had. I got some blankets and delivered them to the homeless shelter. That's early this year of course - I usually think of it as a Christmas activity. Traffic was very quiet again. The weather must be holding the economy back a touch - as if there were not enough other problems! 3.7 after -0.1C. Tulloch Bridge hit -10.7C amongst some widespread and significant Scottish cold.

Another rubbish day for me where I underperform all the indices. Down 0.7%

My two large smaller company trusts (AUSC/MTE) were the biggest value losers, but for me it was just another hopeless day 18-7 to the reds.

Looking at the YTD I have 13 that are down on the year and only 11 that are up with the rest being roughly level.

Miserable, cold overcast wet day 5C . Stopped late afternoon so I went out for a walk. Ghost town.

I hope pensioners are not too worried to have some heating on in this weather, thanks to this rubbish in charge. As each day goes on I detest Starmer's lot even more.

US housing starts continue their recessionary trend since mid 2022. The only thing that seems to be supporting the US economy is the big tech stocks.

That was a pretty pointless exercise then at great risk.

Rained all night, 10.8°C at 6:30 this morning, down to 3.8°C at lunchtime. Wet and miserable and a red screen so that does nothing to lighten the mood.

Morning everyone.

Miserable wet night. Sleet earlier when I woke up . Went back to bed. Still raining now.

Good reaction to IMB results. Awful reaction to those from DPLM.

Portfolio very red. Getting fed up with this shares malarky. The whole country is going down the plughole.

Good morning. We did have that dusting of snow, though it's more a sloppy blanket on greenery and just a touch of frost on paths and roads. We remain in the cold northerly. I'm hoping the cloud clears southwards to let the sun out. I don't suppose the lawn is ever going to get that final mow!

MrP - the personal allowance freeze is absolute madness.

I listened to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs - Steve Reed being interviewed earlier about IHT on farmers - suffice to say, his opening response and continuous mantra was to bang on about Labour 'finding' a £22 Billion hole when they took power - its as if that dubious fact is their mandate to tax and destroy every thing and everybody (unions apart obviously).

BTW - He is MP for Streatham and Croydon - so what he knows about farming can probably be written on a grain of sand.

Morning All.

Skinny, have to agree with that article, can't see how job cuts can be avoided if only due to the rise in employer's NI. In any case I suspect the hit to overall confidence caused by the budget will reduce the need for many jobs anyway.

I am afraid this labour party seem to be the very worst of all worlds. As is labour standard policy, they are determined to take money from those that have worked hard and saved/invested and redistribute their hard earned wealth as they see fit, but they actually have no clue as to how business operates and just see them as an easy source of money. Sadly that will only work whilst those companies still exist! I see growing unemployment on the near horizon.

I have been trying to find ways of reducing the burden of the increased NI on the business but I am being thwarted at every turn. Just to put it in perspective, I have one part time employee that last year cost us £35.88 in employer's NI. After the latest budget, that same person will now cost me £771 - and she claims it's just a 1.2% increase! Even one of our average shop floor workers will rise from £2188.68 to £3306.00 per year.

Not sure why we can't raise the personal allowance to say £20K and add a couple of percentage points to basic rate. That way, the poorer gain a lot and the better off pay much more. Frightened of losing votes I guess.

+0.6%. On a solid year-end update, BEG just edged ahead of PLUS and FRES, all with pushing +2%.

Went grocery shopping at SBRY. Although roads were quiet, the store seemed short-staffed because it was very busy with an odd mix shopping in an odd pattern - probably people buying in food and the odd Christmas present before the snows arrive. Petrol stations were busy.

A very cold day for November but tolerable since there was little wind. +3.3C after -2.0C. (Still need to trim that tree overhanging the sensor.) The house was only 14.3C when I got back in so I advanced the heating and it's taking a while to warm up. Topcliffe got to -6.0C and Tulloch Bridge -7.8C, which are the respective lowests of the season for England and Scotland, I think. Snow does indeed seem to be Sheffield and northeastward. We seem to have snizzle here. You can't see anything but you feel something cold landing on exposed skin. There are already some very cold temperatures in Scotland this evening. Clear skies and odd snow showers could see a -10C there tonight there while we test the battle line between rain and snow - and it's feeling like the cold side winning at the moment, with just 1.1C.

Edit - northerly seems to be winning and undercutting the low's moist SW winds so the snow line is spreading south and getting heavier. I reckon blueliner will see rain turn into snow in an hour or two, with him in line for more precipitation while we just get a dusting and then back into cold and dry.
