08/11/2024 17:19 | -0.5%. BRWM reversing yesterday's gain of nearly 4%. YTD +1.7% after crediting another large dividend to available cash, so not a great week! 9.9C after 8.1C. It's not even bright, though no drizzle today. Shopped at SBRY. There were a few offers but also the odd price rise. I hope the murk breaks to let some folk get a little sun over the weekend. It should feel pleasant if it does. Have a good one. | aleman
08/11/2024 16:54 | Another red day, only large riser WG, and that doesn't take me anywhere near my start price, just aboit everything else red, The reality of Reeves hate of the prudent workers is begining to sink in,any firm with a large work force seems to have been hit today. ON the day -0.95% ON the week -1.07% YTD +2.45% Acouple more weeks like this and I shall be back to minus for the year. | malcolm caton
08/11/2024 16:54 | Terrible end to the week, the worst day for some time. Not sure how, but I ended the week +0.06% taking the YTD to +5.07% so I can only presume the managed funds had a good week as the individual shares were a bit of a horror show! Off to the NEC tomorrow to the classic car show. Have never been so it will be a new experience! Tennis on Sunday, first time for a few weeks. Enjoy your weekends. MrP | mrphil

08/11/2024 14:27 | When is someone going to stand up to these woke idiots and tell them to get a life?! | mrphil
08/11/2024 14:07 | Morning all. I'm enjoying the addition of the HIX to my Stockofolio screen as it seems to flatter my performance on a daily basis - for example today at 2pm. HIX - minus 1.1% IUKD - minus .8% Allshare is minus .61%. Bruciefolio - plus .18% Needless to say, I prefer to be flattered than flattened, which also happens. I also notice the HIX yields forecast 5.7% in contrast to my 10.50%. No doubt someone will put me right? In the meantime the my stable of high yielders is testing my resolve: GSF; LIO; GCP at ALTs. And heading down again - SEIT and possibly NESF. As in life, so in investing, there is generally a reason why things seem cheap; the skill lies in separating the reality from the perception. | brucie5
08/11/2024 12:34 | The FTSE has fallen through the 200DMA for the first time since February. free stock charts from uk.advfn.com | skinny
08/11/2024 12:31 | Very grey here again and so dry - I can't remember the last time we had more than a few drops of rain.. Nice Chrysanthemum MrP. I have Osteospermums and Alstroemerias in large pots and still in flower - all need watering. | skinny
08/11/2024 12:08 | I've managed that a couple of times MrP. Need the wind in my favour though. I only play the slice in winter when the balls don't bounce as much - in mens doubles it normally gets intercepted if the net player is good. I pay about £12 for a group lesson (75mins) which is OK - its fun and having someone watch what I do is helpful. Its easy to see what to do by following an online lesson but you can't watch yourself. My multiple issues are footwork - I tend to admire my own serve and then act surprised when its at my feet and I'm nowhere in midcourt as well as just not getting into position in time. I don't get low enough on my backhand or hit my forehand hard enough or with enough topspin, I can't put away enough soft volleys, I'm not fit enough to play 4 hard sets, I haven't really worked out whether I should break the wrists with my backhand. I'm sure I have some strengths somewhere though. This year we've been promoted beyond our ability. Most players have been coached for years and several have played representative or county level (or in one case for GB) has been a challenge its not something that a dozen lessons will even out. But given I was fairly useless when I started, being useless at a decent level is an achievement. Looks like another horrible red day. | dr biotech
08/11/2024 11:15 | phil, that's amazing, Skinny is right about the lottery ticket! Same here for sunshine, don't think we have seen any yet this month! Thought we ought to have a pretty picture to brighten things up. This has just come out into flower from a small cutting MrsP took a while ago. | mrphil
08/11/2024 10:29 | "And for the first time ever Quiz = 7/7 all guesses :)" Can you give me some lottery numbers :-) | skinny
08/11/2024 10:26 | Morning everyone. And yet another dull , overcast, miserable day. That's eleven days without sunshine in South Bucks. Portfolio smashed today with all my food retailers hammered SBRY, TSCO, MKS and GRG. And for the first time ever Quiz = 7/7 all guesses :) | philanderer
08/11/2024 09:52 | Interesting jump for NYSE:LICY where I bought a few a couple of months ago and have watched them drop lower ever since. They are actually now in profit and are just about my only riser today! | mrphil
08/11/2024 08:27 | wllm, I am afraid I am guilty of using a lot of spin in my game! I'm determined to get it to land just over the net then bounce back over again, and have been mighty close many times! | mrphil
08/11/2024 08:26 | Morning All. A disappointing 1/7 for me this week, all total guesses! wllm, just play tennis for leisure with a few friends, two of which are struggling to still play due to age and ailments. I'm intending to get in the odd game of singles with the better player out of the men, as I do like a bit of competition. I'm currently ahead on matches with him but he does go to another club and I know he has been having lessons as his serve has improved no end! I used to play badminton in a couple of local leagues but I think that's what finished my back as there is so much short sharp twists and turns and I have always been one to go for any shot even if it seems impossible to reach! I got to the stage where I was playing for two clubs and could end up playing 5 nights a week which was too much. Topped up the grandkids HFEL for this month into their Junior ISA's, might need to think about increasing the monthly contribution "out of income" with an eye on future IHT. | mrphil
08/11/2024 08:05 | That's interesting Dr B. There is a really good coach at our club who worked for many years with the LTA, but, £30 a lesson is expensive when I can find a lot of resouces online. My backhand is my weakest shot and all decent players target it. I work on it with the ball machine but it's very much a work in progress. Talking of slow players, there is one player I play against in a singles League who slices everything, the ball stays so low all the time it's hard to get any rhythm, I struggle against his style of play and end playing a similar slow, pappy style of play which is horrible. Keeps us fit though which is the main thing. wllm :) | wllmherk
08/11/2024 07:48 | I’ve started having coaching as part of a group, both our AB sides got relegated this year and we need to improve. Serving is one of my stronger points - it’s not express but it swings and is accurate. Second serve isn’t so good, my kicker isn’t particularly reliable and it doesn’t kick enough. Keeping the throwing arm up as long as possible helps, the throw is really key. Volleying is something we all work on too, lots of routines and group practice. We only play doubles so that’s just as important as ground strokes. Play me and you have to hit a lot of backhands, at least initially. A few members have slingers but I don’t. I probably play 3 times a week. A match/pratice match and social which isn’t serious. Sometimes I think playing that (or mixed) makes my tennis worse. My Achilles heel is slow play. Hit a dobby slow mid court ball and I struggle. | dr biotech

07/11/2024 23:09 | Welcome back Gateside, my fellow Scot, not going to lie, we were thinking you had left us after such a lengthy interlude, I even sent you a couple of private messages. Glad you and your good lady are on the mend and a great achievement by your daughter, you must be very proud :) With a couple of my regular tennis opponents injured over the Summer and Autumn I have spent a lot of my spare time practising my serve and working with the ball machine and I'm finding it has really helped my all round game, my serve has really improved. Spent hours watching you tube videos and rolling the serves in until I had the technique before adding more power. It can still be inconsistant at times with too many double faults, but it's getting there. Dr B, MrP, do you both just play matches or do either of you practise? Weather was lovely today, no wind and some lovely sunshine. Off for a 12 mile cycle with my good lady tomorrow morning. wllm :) | wllmherk
07/11/2024 22:45 | Just in. A good day here, up 0.75%. BRWM, CHRT, JUST & TCAP best risers; a smattering of 4 or 5 fallers. Happy to take that. s/f | scottishfield
07/11/2024 21:17 | I'm up +0.242% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.318%). Best rises: IMI +5.42%, S32 +5.19% and BHP +3.54%. Worst falls: BT.A -3.59%, TSCO -2.46% and RKT -2.33%. Miners helped today, plus a good update from IMI. I had 3 reporting, NG., TATE and BT.A. I'm still catching up on company news from two weeks ago. The problem is, finding time for a snooze.
