I think I mentioned at the time, but earlier in the year, my insurance renewal quote from Saga, went from @£400 to over £800 - that from a company who are meant to specialise in over 50s.

Normally you can phone up and have a bit of a haggle - not this year - the attitude was take it or leave it - needless to say - I left it.

I've heard similar stories from friends - so it seems fairly common practice?

MrP - there are a rash of news articles and videos around that talk of massive insurance premium rises for electric cars and even higher depreciation. Apparently, cars reaching 5 or 6 years old have an accident and get written off completely because only minor battery damage means it has to be replaced at very great cost - more than the car is worth. It might be scaremongering again but it's doing a great job! I'll see if I can find an example.

Edit -

Our Christmas Tree is looking good with it's new cones. The squirrel has been enjoying them but there are still plenty left!

Skinny, cracking picture of The Needles there. I have some nice ones taken from the sea but that's fantastic!

My understanding from our trading partners is that Germany is in a bit of a mess so I'm surprised they are buying anything! All figures I have seen for the UK show EV sales not only increasing, but taking a larger share of the pot. Of course, figures are always used in a way to suit the writer, and the main headline here was that sales of new EV's to "private" buyers had collapsed. Well of course they have as it's a no brainer to put it on the company! Why non EV drivers have to keep knocking EV's simply baffles me. It's almost as if they are looking for an excuse not to buy one, but my view is don't bother if you don't want one - simple! To me the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages and I certainly never bought because the government told me to, and that seems to be the real issue with many. To me, there are so many reasons not to go back to an ICE car, but if people want to stick with them then that's up to them.

Swings and roundabouts for my lot so far today but marginally blue at the moment.

So economists say the UK is coming out of recession yet Deliveroo orders were flat, from +1% last quarter, and Dunelm shares fall as it says sales are "challenging"?

I've put a load of washing out later than I would like and it looks like it will be coming in soon already.

Oil and the crack spread are both off a few $s and back to mid-March levels. I presume petrol will be back to mid-March levels in a week or two, giving up its 5p gain since then (and suggesting UK CPI should then drop to target by May)?

Phil/MrP, I truly believe the Country is beyond repair - utterly broken, with no obvious way of taking back the 'rights' of people to take, take take and never contribute anything.

As I said, we see this daily in people applying for tenancies - it used to be the odd one, but now is almost the norm.

Again - today's mantra - "Everyone has rights, no one has responsibilities"

On a lighter note, I bet whoever took this picture felt pleased with themselves and rightly so.

Morning All.

Skinny, that article just reinforces everything we are finding when trying to recruit and even with the Real Living Wage at £25K it's difficult to tempt some to get off their ar*es and actually earn their money. As wllm says, our handling of the pandemic has really made the problem far worse. So many got used to sitting at home and either still drawing a salary for doing not a lot, or surviving on handouts.

Sunny and chilly.

Skinny that article is depressing and frightening. The country is broken, possibly beyond repair.

That link doesn't work for me Skinny, but, the headline is shocking if not surprising. This should have been the kind of situation the Government tried to address by cutting welfare, but, as I've said many times, they don't, as they are not Conservative.

I fell to a low for 2024 yesterday with my largest holding PHNX doing the damage. Since going xd for 26p they have fallen approx 75p.

My wife sees it all of the time with people applying to rent properties who have never worked or got any desire to work, yet can afford London rents - its so exasperating.

BHP, RIO, CMCX, BRWM, JSG, miners rose holding onto their respective production guidance.

ASY fell the most, then PHNX.

Just had an April shower with hail and thunder , max 11C from 3C, felt chilly, heating on.

Good luck with your phone mast MrP, seems incongruous to site it there.

+0.8%. FRES at +3% still does not appear to be keeping up with PM prices.

The sun was powerful enough to overcome the cold wind in the morning but it was very cold under afternoon clouds bringing hail. Did better than I expected on a sunny bike ride - helped by properly inflating tyres - but hurting afterwards from the supposed "scar tissue" so it is not seem to be settling down. 12.6C after 2.5C.

Didn't want a lot at SBRY today but 4 out of stocks meant I spent possibly 15-20% less than I would have. That's really bad for business. Yet another couple of items rose in price. Is that the new minimum wage in action?

Turkey roast and puds.

A welcome +0.72% recovery today, top gainers LLOY, CUSN & RIO

Going to a meeting of our town council this evening where the proposed installation of a 20m phone mast pretty much outside my house is being discussed. A 65 feet high solid metal pole with 9 antenna and two dishes and six metal cabinets each 1.8mts high sounds like an industrial installation to me and should be located in an industrial area (of which there are plenty nearby). Our current government relaxed the rules to "speed up 5G" and have basically given installers permission to stick them wherever they like, as long as they "keep visual impact to a minimum". Painting it green isn't really going to help, especially as over half of it will be above any nearby trees! I agree we seem to need these things as we are obsessed with ever faster internet speeds, but for goodness sake let's be sensible and put them in appropriate places. We have a motorway embankment a few hundred yards away which would be perfect, but of course it will cost them more in infrastructure so they will find "technical reasons" why it needs to go in a residential area.
