The Terriers (lol) were well beaten at PNE. Deeper and deeper into trouble. To add to my depression NZ has been left in a bit of a mess by the last Labour government who opened the doors wide to mass immigration for mainly totally unqualified people, hugely boosted the numbers of unneeded civil servants whilst large numbers of our needed qualified personnel debunked to Aus. However, they scored well on building speed humps and cycle pathways to nowhere.

Portfolio +0.05% , not much happening, gains for BP and AAL , losses for VSVS and IMB, neither here nor there for the rest.

Rain and overcast this morning, sunny this afternoon , very very windy all day 16C. Washing out on the new washing line this afternoon, almost dry in under two hours.

Sainsbury's this morning very quiet, I usually go on a wednesday though so this may be usual. Still a few half price beef joints available so they went in the trolley.

Quick afternoon walk to the Nature Reserve was bracing.

QPR at Plymouth tonight .... I'm not confident of getting anything at all. I think we're in big trouble.

Slow cooker with beef, carrots, swede and onions. Dumplings to add later and potatoes to cook. All with a bottle of red.

Supposed to be dry and sunny this afternoon but we've just had a short horizontal shower of rain and now it's sunny again! Local coastal parts are being flooded with the high tides today.

I've done well to add another modest gain to yesterday's bumper one, though I was well up earlier. +0.2%, with useful gains at VOF, DEC and FRES, which all seem to have some momentum.

The morning sun was fleeting and we had rain for a few hours starting before lunch. Just grey now. Driving about showed it has been wetter than I realised overnight, and that's been added to since. 16.2C (edit - wrong prob 11C) after 7.4C.

The Vale of York gets about 700mm of rain per year of which 75mm is in April. Leeming has already had 109mm this month so already the 10th consecutive wetter than average month. If my mental arithmetic is correct YTD is a couple of mm shy of 400, so 27% of the way into the year has seen around 57% of the average annual rainfall for Leeming. After what we already had in H2/2023 (750mm+), I think the rain should take the rest of the year off.

EU gas storage has bottomed at 58.3% from a peak of 98.6% - a fall of 40.3%. Shouldn't we paying lower than historic prices if we are awash with the stuff?

Next observation, if we are awash with it and prices are so low that wells are being closed for maintenance, or just closed, and drilling postponed, then isn't there only one way for the gas price to go in future as supply dwindles and cheaper prices increase demand (particularly in the Far East apparently)?

US economy is strong so rates might stay high?

US economic optimism falls for third month:

US Small Business Optimism hits 13+ year low. (It's been pretty dire for 2 years already yet is going lower as rate cuts get resisted by those in charge.)

Here we go - US markets opened and down everything goes again. That includes Gilts yields. They're maybe leaning back towards 10 x 0.25% rate cuts in the next two years. We keep getting these big stories - inflation undershooting or inflation staying high - yet Gilts yields have not really changed their indication much since the end of last year when a bit of positivity filtered through in Q4. VIX is rising a bit, though.

Another new high of £1868/$2365 for gold.

Done a second fill with ordinary E5 unleaded and the power fell as petrol consumption rose. The new car seems to be doing the same as the last one. I could tell just by the feel, without checking the numbers, but the numbers do indeed suggest around a 15% drop in fuel efficiency with E5. I'm a bit shocked because I thought the old car exaggerated the difference in fuel quality due to being a bit underpowered, yet this one is doing it too with 180bhp+. It's early days, though, and I fancy it will trend lower when I get into more of a routine now the holidays are over.

Sainburys was busy. I spotted another couple of price rises. Why?

Morning All.

Been trying to sort out some issues with staff restructuring this morning, brought about by people changing their minds but not until after we've made the relevant changes!

My lot just about blue at the moment and I'm pleased to see a slight improvement in the £ against the Euro as I have a large payment to make next week!

A rare post from me these days on the Arctic:

The Arctic winter peak for ice extent has been markedly higher this year after a sharp rise over the last year - 15th lowest after 6th last year and 3rd in 2022 (lowest was 2016). It is now not melting off quite as quickly as normal for this time of year so the ice level remains much above recent years, though the main melt season could end up quite different.

It will be interesting to see if this translates into an icier NW Passage this year.
