22/3/2024 16:36 | Bit of a nothing day for me with no single holding moving the total more than 0.1% either way. Feels like there has been a party this week that I wasn't invited too - nevertheless just about a positive outcome overall YTD +0.9% | dr biotech
22/3/2024 15:51 | DrB, not heard that before but I guess it makes sense. A bit sad really! We had a fair amount of frogspawn in the pond a few weeks back but it all seemed to wither away. Mind you, it did that last year and we did end up with tadpoles so we are still hoping! I did count 11 newts in there the other night so that might explain it! Plenty of spawn (now tadpoles) in our little pond up at the woods. Looks like my lot could be back into positive territory this week! | mrphil
22/3/2024 14:33 | Apparently there is a reserve list for premium bonds. If the original winner is unable to accept the prize (typically deceased for more than 12months) then the prize is handed down to the reserve winners. Seems someones terminal decline has been to your fortune MrP. Hope that doesn't spoil your win. | dr biotech
22/3/2024 14:16 | MRP , that's a right result :-) Just realised it's near the end of march and I've not seen any frogs or frogspawn in my ponds ! | philanderer
22/3/2024 14:10 | Here's a new one. Received a letter today from NS&I telling me they have paid £25 into my bank as a result of a premium bond win with the sentence "You have qualified for this prize as the original winner was not eligible to receive it". I have checked the number and it is definitely one of my bonds and even more strange my online account doesn't register any wins for March! Also, wins are usually automatically reinvested into new bonds so it's all very strange. I shan't be complaining though! | mrphil
22/3/2024 13:14 | Thanks, D.B.. It's interesting the way sports science is developing. They changed from symmetrical to asymmetrical footballs and that changed the game. Footballs have matt and polished surfaces for the background leather and patterns/logos. They uses to always be the same on opposite sides so a slow-spinning ball always had a similar air resitance on each. Then, a few world cups back, they changed to asymmetrical patterns so the air resistance on each side was different and changed as the ball rotated slowly. This meant a slow-spinner would "suck" a bit to the left and then a bit to the right and so on. The idea was to create more goals by making it hard for goalkeepers and defenders to judge the line of flight accurately. It worked. Goalkeepers sometimes look stupid when they misjudge a shot that is straight at them and centre-backs score loads of own-goals these days. Having been brought up on symmetrical footballs, it feels unfair to me. But, then, strikers also have to deal with it, too. I reckon players would look more skillful if they went back to symmetrical footballs only but there'd be a small decrease in goals scored. Will they ever do it in tennis? I don't suppose it would make as much difference there, though. Just walked No.1 to the village cafe to sit outside in the sun. We had to retreat inside after 10 minutes. I had 4 layers on and it wasn't enough despite no cloud at that time. It's one of those days where you could get both sunburn and frostbite. It's a warm 25C+ back in the house but I've kept the windows closed! | aleman
22/3/2024 12:29 | The strings tend to be made of different fibres which will make them more grippy - the tension tends to affect the elasticity more. Looser strings give more power, tighter strings give more control. The tension will also be different according to the temperature etc. I remember Andy Murray saying he uses strings that are 10lb tighter playing at altitude than at sea level or similar. Typically I go for mid tension and get it restrung a couple of times a year, and most down my club are the same. I've never tried two rackets with different tensions, perhaps I should. | dr biotech
22/3/2024 11:49 | NAVs are coming through on my trusts with a nice little jump today. I could make some money if the shares just move back to yesterdays's stretched discounts - or will they expand some more? | aleman
22/3/2024 11:33 | Do more elastic strings (though obviously taught enough so it's hard to tell?) give more spin, Dr Bio? Here's a new one. Just been on Netweather and they have a new cookie acceptance box. It only prompted essential cookies out of 5 boxes so I just accepted that to see what it did. Then it went down the other boxes TICKING THEMSELVES IN rapidly one by one and the prompt disappeared! I'm not really fussed but what manner of agreement is that!? Anyone else get the same? | aleman
22/3/2024 11:27 | 2/7 for me. This weeks rally mostly passing me by - but hopefully a few more will get close to being above the line for the year. Played tennis earlier. Had a new racket for xmas, a Babolat pure aero which I had strung by the supplier with a special string that is supposed to add more spin. In few times I used it I wasn't impressed, I failed to find the sweet spot and the strings were moving about too much (so that the squares quickly became oblongs. So I had it restrung by our coach and that seems to have made a big difference. Will still take some getting used to. We've also decided as a team to try and get some external coaching for what is going to be a very hard season ahead. Probably too late to make a difference. | dr biotech
22/3/2024 11:18 | Miserable day here ,grey and drizzling. Portfo;io not doing much, held back by seconary placing in DARK -9% as a whole veering between + and -, a contrast to yesterday nowere near matching the index. | malcolm caton
22/3/2024 10:52 | Good morning. The sun is out and I've been able to put a load of washing outside to dry for a change. The house is 22C and rising. I might have to open a window for the first time (unbelievably late this year after all the greyness). No.1's school has broken up. (Training day today - I wonder how many have managed to book slightly cheaper holiday flights?) We'll probably go for a walk and lunch to get some sun. I'm probably in need of a vitamin D boost. | aleman
