No, there isn't because you have these companies spending 100s of millions of pure solid cash being spent on wasteful buybacks.

Vodafone at 55p worked out to be almost 13%. Roll on vod divi

LOL, there are not many (any?) paying 15% dividends.

Once again....this what should happen but in reality it doesn't.

Next yr you'll still get 15% as long as the profits are coming in.

And once you have been paid your 15% dividend by not doing a share buy back what happens the year after?

The dividend pot available then has to be split amongst the entire 100% of shareholders and not the 90% that would remain (the other 10% having been bought back and cancelled).

So the dividend would be higher for every year.

I'd much rather receive a 15% divi than dumping cash down the drain.

15% is a decent return. Can't even get that on property after stamp duty and cgt. And once Killa starmar comes in he will for sure go for landlords

If a company can get a 20% return on capital or, pay a 4% divi I would rather they invested it and grew the company that paid it out giving HMRC a slice.

I don't need the income. If I did I would hold a HYB fund or UKW or similar

Well if HBR didn't waste 1bn on buybacks. They'd have paid 15% dividend.

You must agree with the fact that buybacks is oir money down the drain

I prefer the first line of your post “imagine a 15% dividend payment every year.”
One can only imagine as it doesn’t exist….. for a reason.
Let’s just agree to disagree.

Harbour energy data

Div yield (%) Buyback yield (%)
2024 6.08 8.13
2023 6.25 16.32
2022 5.90 1.72

Profits have been increasing at harbour energy but just take a look at the whopping cash wasted on extremely expensive buybacks yet dividend has gone down. Almost a billion spent on buybacks. Sp is still 300p area.

I wish Harbour just spent that 1bn paying a higher dividend amount

Read the first line of my post. I said this is what happens in 'reality'.

What happens in reality is that you don't get the 10% rise in dividend payments.

Of course I'll be fixated on higher dividends. 15% is better than 6%. And that money comes into your pocket instantly just like the dividends payment I received end of May.

Buybacks are and always have been pure solid cash poured down the drain or burnt to ashes. Zero effect...in REALITY

Space dust , with the greatest of respect you seem very fixated with a higher dividend. Hopefully you are aware that you’ll get that with the buyback when the shares are cancelled?
The Dame is committed to returning the £235m disposal proceeds to shareholders.
Firstly buy the shares in the open market (granted this will take over a year most likely). Let’s say it’s circa 10% of the shares outstanding for simplicity sake. (Most likely 5-8%).
Cancel them. ITV will then pay out the same proceeds to shareholders (unlike the Fitch report as she has committed to returning the capital), but to 10% less shareholders , so giving them a 10% higher payout , ie 5.5p rather than 5p.

I hear the same thing all the time.

Fact is the share price has been a dog and the buyback is helping appreciate the share price.

Imagine a 15% dividend payment every year. You'll have tonnes of investors piling in with all their toes and elbows all fully in. Sp would rise exponentially too.

Buybacks are a complete and utter waste of shareholders money.

Unless volumes pick up we're on course for the lowest volume of ITV traded so far this year. Perhaps especially quiet ahead of the US Core PCE Price Index number at 1:30pm?...

Let me explain

If a company sells a piece of itself for $500M and pays that back as "dividends" it isn't really a dividend it is a return of capital without a reduction in share count and it is taxable for the recipient. It is even taxed in a pension.

because the company revenue reduces, and the share count is static it is likely that eps falls so, the share price falls.

net result is a tax bill and a capital loss.

Personally, I don't see the attraction.

Cheers, thebutler. Looks like I continue to call this spot on as the share price has yet again opened over 80p in readiness for a very strong upward surge. The buyback should also resume within the next week.

Buybacks are brilliant. Itv share price has risen 40% since buyback started. 'Nuff said 😁
