Crunk,

How is this relevant to IQE? Where there is money there will be corruption? It doesn't just affect AIM -

What do you hope to achieve by ranting about it on an unrelated BB? Can we keep this to IQE, please

Cheers

Cotswoldsparky:

That does go a long way to explaining IQE's reluctance to say anything. The last thing we want as shareholders is a $50m fine to hit the bottom line.

Good point made and taken.

Diplomat,

'A' level for me! I have a very tenuous link to VCSELs through family history - it turns out I am distantly related to William Bragg & son, nobel prize winners whose techniques are used in VCSELs. I guess this goes part way to explaining why I'm an Engineer...

Diplomat,

You echoed my own thoughts on news items - Filtronic RNS a contract win and it's "why can't IQE do that", no mention of the $60M RNS that came out from IQE a few days beforehand.

Out of interest, how many on here work in the tech sector? Not many, I'm guessing. Competitive advantage can make or break a company and Apple's big growth has come in part from secrecy. Naturally others will copy this and you end up in a situation where information is at a premium and caution reigns.

If you don't understand how draconian an Apple NDA is, this is worth a read...

$50M dollar fines per leak and even admitting the NDA exists is a breach!

Many on here were previous IMG investors so appreciate what can happen if you p-off Apple. I'm happy with how things are going, given the alternative...if it's information you crave, invest in VRS or HUR as they seem quite free with their RNSs - but I guess neither of them supply APPL ;-)

Diplomat,

Don't think it is using the same devices. PASSION project is using InP VCSELs (slide 9), I believe iPhone uses GaAs.

I guess when you are applying for funding, a statement like "...take technology from the latest iPhone and use it to generate unparalleled broadband speeds." is more likely to succeed than "...take a 50-year old technology and use it to generate uparalleled broadband speeds"

That's not to say that IQE aren't involved in some way, just can't infer it from this (slightly ambiguous) statement.

It was suggested there was no involvement for IQE in the PASSION project and their use of VCSEL's.Digging a bit deeper I found this article on the PASSION website confirming their project indeed uses IQE's tech found in the iPhone X . . . hTTp://www.passion-project.eu/news/tech-found-in-iphone-x-could-usher-in-lightspeed-broadband-in-cities/

"The researchers are using Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) sources with photonic integrated circuits, optical switches, and semiconductor optical amplifiers to develop long wavelength, high-capacity communications."Sounds to me like IQE is the most likely supplier of that component.

Faster High Capacity Internet Networks via Photonics

MILAN, Aug. 3, 2018 — EU Scientists are harnessing next generation lasers to create light-speed broadband connections and to remove the data bottlenecks that could cause the internet to grind to a halt as demand increases.

The EU-funded researchers from 9 different countries (Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Israel, France, Japan, and South Korea) and 14 different organizations, call themselves PASSION — Photonic technologies for progrAmmable transmission and switching modular systems based on Scalable Spectrum/space aggregation for future agIle high capacity metrO Networks.

The researchers are using Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) sources with photonic integrated circuits, optical switches, and semiconductor optical amplifiers to develop long wavelength, high-capacity communications. This could pave the way for light-speed metropolitan connectivity, and power new smart services like future gaming and on-demand TV.

VCSELs are cheap to manufacture, and more efficient than traditional laser sources. The super-fast components have the potential to revolutionize smart services that consume enormous amounts of data for connected citizens of the future. With transmission rates up to 112 Tb/s, sending 28 thousand HD movies would take as little as 1 second.
VCSELs emit vertically, giving compactness to the laser. They also consume very low energy. Courtesy of PASSION.

VCSELs have been used in data communications for short-distance connections in intra-data centers. Using these infrared lasers for long wavelength and high capacity communications is a new concept.

The PASSION team chose to exploit VCSEL light sources because of their high transmission efficiency and minimal power consumption.

“VCSELs could be the next big leap in metro communications. They are already employed widely in data communications, in intra-data center short-distance connections for example, “ said PASSION project manager Paola Parolari.

“VCSELs are a bit of a buzz word at the moment. They have the advantages of low driving current, high light-power conversion efficiency and high directivity, said project coordinator, Pierpaolo Boffi. “This makes them an ideal choice for transmitting huge amounts of data in a low cost, energy efficient way.”

Boffi told Photonics Media that the PASSION team has ambitions to reduce the current power consumption of the internet by ten times their current rates.

“The success of PASSION could provide a new technology for the very high capacity optical transport with reduced footprint and energy consumption,” he said.

U.S. internet technology company, Cisco predicts that internet traffic will grow to an unprecedented 3.3 trillion gigabytes per year between 2016 and 2021.

“If we are serious about having super-connected citizens, using broadband services such as telework, improved entertainment such as HD and 3D TV on demand, or gaming, remote health care, assisted living, enhanced social networking, ‘eLearningR17; for example, we need a fiber optic network that is leagues ahead of where it is now,” said Boffi.

PASSION will develop new transmission, detection, and routing solutions as well as an advanced network architecture based on VCSELs.

The PASSION consortium has secured a grant of €7,535,747 from the European Commission under the H2020 funding program and was funded under the Photonics Public Private Partnership. v PASSION participants include: Politecnico di Milano, SM Optics, CTTC, Telefonica, VLC Photonics, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Effect Photonics, VTT, Vertilas, OpSys Technologies, EPIC, NICT, ETRI, and ChemOptics.

Researchers are working on the specifications and design of the new devices and subsystems are currently being defined. They hope to be able to test the new devices in a few months.

Solderflux:I had every intention of responding to your post 19551 on Thursday 2nd August but played golf instead and the moment was lost. However, you suggested the company should not hide behind NDA's and should instead find a way of sharing positive news when the opportunity arises. Perhaps you were on the golf course 9 days ago when IQE announced on 24th of July they had successfully renewed a contract worth US Dollars 60 Million over the next 12 months, so here it is again:"Semiconductor wafer products and services company IQE has successfully renegotiated its long-term supply contract with an unnamed "premier tier one" customer for the supply of wafer products used in wireless applications, it announced on Tuesday. The AIM-traded firm said that in doing so, it extended the range of products covered and increased the overall IQE share of the customers' epiwafer requirements. It said the contract was estimated to be worth in the order of $60m through to September 2019.The supply contract guaranteed IQE around 80% of the customer's demand for epiwafers, with the board saying it underlined the strength of the long-term customer relationship that IQE had developed over "many years", having consistently been recognised as one of the customer's best performing suppliers.IQE's wireless segment was reportedly continuing to leverage its global manufacturing facilities to fulfill the supply contract from its North American facilities in Massachusetts, and North Carolina, as well as its main wireless manufacturing site in Taiwan. The contract covered epiwafer products for radio frequency applications including power amplifiers, low noise amplifiers, and switches which IQE said were used in a "wide range" of connected devices such smartphones, tablets, PCs, routers and other 'internet of things' devices.Demand for compound semiconductor enabled devices was expected to underpin the roll-out of 5G over the coming years, the board added."This contract renewal confirms our position as a clear technology leader and the number one choice for advanced semiconductor products for wireless applications," said IQE's head of wireless Daily Hill."IQE's epiwafer products have been behind the global adoption of 4G/LTE and WiFi systems and this major supply contract underlines the world-leading performance which IQE products provide for current and next-generation wireless applications including the global roll-out of 5G."

B&B:"In my view when you increase supply in to the market, the price received for goods may fall . . ."I would agree with you if there were a plethora of other suppliers of those "goods" but we are talking IQE's multi-layered wafers with each layer at the atomic level. The really good news is IQE will be supplying more of their wafer product to TEN more customers who can hardly shop around on price. So chill B&B and enjoy the weather. The sun ain't going down on IQE anytime soon. GLA LTH

"Placing price last year of 1.40, today's latest price is 1.03, down 26% from placing. Never a good sign. Those that have not sold up from the placing would I imagine be getting very twitchy?"

Oh come on BnB you are much better than that sort of nonsense infact I feel a sense of desperation in that statement.

The real factors moving forward are what will be the size of the orders that come from the "VCSEL qualification programmes with over 10 additional key VCSEL chip manufacturers".

There is every reason to believe that all the qualifications will pass, it is just a question as to when? and how much these contracts will be worth?

We know that the current turnover and profit projections only include contracted work, so these new qualifications will lift the 2018/19 projections.

Have a good weekend all long and shorters.
