I'll also add, my local post office offers evri and yodel services as well as rm. They also deal with amazon. I'm not sure what is going to happen with rm, I'll speculate a further strike 3rd quarter 2024 focussing on further tweaks or job losses ?

I've been using evri more in the last few months, it's about a 50/50 split between evri and rm for me these days. Evri is very competitive for smaller parcels, the rm price hikes in april and october affected my own competitiveness.

31337COD3r,

You must live in my delivery area! :-)

PS. Volumes were massively up and still are. We've still tons of work coming in. I've just finished and it's almost midnight. Back in tomorrow around 9 helping my lads sorting for their day then picking up any slack around mid afternoon until everything delivered. Hopefully goes smoother than today. (Traffic hold-ups with the sales, puncture and dog bite)

This Christmas was very different, not a single customer contacted me regarding a delayed delivery, whereas in previous years I usually had around 20-30 complaints to deal with.

This either means Royal Mail have finally got their act together, or their posting volumes were down significantly compared to previous years. There's usually an update towards the end of January so we will know which it is soon enough.

chancer,

Precisely why they don't do that now. Just charge you. Don't pay, don't use RM!

Easy really, they don't need customers who are deliberately robbing them and the ones who make a genuine mistake will soon sharpen up their in-house systems.

encarter,

Fraud is a criminal offence last time I looked. Companies have been "rounding down" for years. RM now have the software to detect this and are taking appropriate action to protect themselves.

You are free to take your mail to the Post Office and have each item individually weighed by the assistant to ensure you do not incur a fine and RM do not charge for this. If, however, you choose to weigh, sort and print your own labels then it is 100% your responsibility for any errors that occur.

The "fine" is a payment to cover the admin costs incurred in re-sorting, calculating the correct postage, informing the customer of excess charges, etc etc.

They all know what they are doing but because it was very rarely monitored many of them took advantage. Just read the post by 31337 COD3R.

It all helps the profits so should be welcomed by everyone on here.

IDS/ Royal Mail getting slaughtered in the Sunday Times this morning for non-delivery of mail and concentrating on parcels. An undercover investigation...

31337 COD3R,

Great news! That should cover your fines and give you and RM a boost!

Trebles all round!

It seems that you are upset Royal Mail have introduced a new system which prevents customers, who have exploited the lax controls of the past, from deliberately understating the cost of their letters/parcels in order to defraud the Company.

It is precisely this type of behaviour which jeopardizes the future of 150,000 employees and has been a constant drag on profits since privatisation in 2013.

With regards to your comment, "a lot of businesses will go bust this year," I am delighted to say that Royal Mail won't be one of them!

Merry Christmas

Not just because they've increased prices multiple times during the year.

Not just because they increased the fuel surcharge further, yet global oil prices have fallen.

Not just because they introduced a "Christmas surcharge".

But because they've just switched on an automated system which fines business customers £4.45 for every Large Letter which should have been sent as a parcel. £4.45 for every Small Parcel that should have been sent as a Medium Parcel. Some of these are just packing issues where the item inside could easily have been packed differently to make use of all the allowable space. But Royal Mail haven't cared about this before so senders didn't either. For example a tiny bottle of nail varnish sold for £1.99 and sent as a Large Letter, but because it's 1mm thicker than the 25mm allowed, it should have been sent as a Small Parcel (costing £2.99). Including the fine plus original postage, in this example the sender will make more than a £5 loss for every item sent. It's no coincidence Royal Mail choose to switch this system on during the busiest posting time of the year to generate the maximum number of fines possible. The biggest scam of all is that that they've created this system to notify you of each fine 2 weeks afterwards. They have no interest in allowing you to make adjustments and corrections. So I'm sure there will be some companies getting thousands of fines for the next 2 weeks and unable to do anything about it.

A lot of products will no longer be economically viable to sell. Some will have to more than double in price, not helping inflation. And lot of businesses will go bust this year before of Royal Mail.

i reduced the amount of cards this year to six people after last year they never arrived until january. however the parcel post service is excellent, makes me think they are trying to get rid of the letter service.

The article says IDS is mulling a bid for a Czech business - no sign of a bid for IDS itself
