12/11/2002 23:50 | I fear you are being led into a battle you can't win. I work in the Electricity Supply Industry and have being getting RPI+0.5% pay rises for several years now and watching as both our management and staff are cut to the bone. Our working practices bear no relation to what they were 10 years ago BUT your lights stay on and people I work with are still willing to put in an 8+ hour day for 7.5 hours pay (no overtime payments anymore for us). I am afraid the 21st century is about to catch up with you. | ![]() esmerelda

12/11/2002 23:46 | Labourers can earn more than firemen, so do roofers thats for sure, but you're missing the point. They have to work very hard for their money, they only get paid for the hours they are actually labouring/roofing. They have NO Pensions & NO early retirment, NO sick pay, NO early medical retirement when they fall off a roof, or dodgy scaffolding. If they take a day off when they're hungover, or their wife is sick,(no such thing as domestics) they don't get paid, and could very well be sacked on the spot. Add that lot up and firemen are being paid quite a lot more than 21.5k basic. The firemen appear to be basically quite a cheerful bunch, for very good reason. | ![]() spongy2
12/11/2002 23:38 | Fast Player - which one are you? | adek
12/11/2002 23:34 | bigboyo totally agree, if you put on a pedestal those who care for, educate and look after people`s wellbeing you ain`t going too wrong unfortunately those in public service are treated as though they are an unproductive burden on the state and the almighty taxpayer | bourdon
12/11/2002 23:32 | Has anyone seen these hooligans on the T.V. ? A disgrace in my opinion ! | gypsy king
12/11/2002 23:27 | Resign ! LOSERS ! | gypsy king
12/11/2002 23:26 | labourers earn up to £150 for a 12 shift.....dont say NO! Because its true.........Firemen are hero's ...always were...AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!!.....what they earn is disgusting compared to what we lot can make in a minute with Investing ( intelligent gambling) | fast piayer
12/11/2002 23:26 | Roofers have a very high rate of injury..but they probably get loads of money.. Sorry Sparky, this doesn't help the cause..but if fire officers get a massive rise, so wanting will be the teachers, the nurses, the police, the soldiers, and all other gov employees....... Where is the money to come from to fund all this? | adek
12/11/2002 23:26 | It IS that simple! Get another job ! Simple ! | gypsy king
12/11/2002 23:23 | It's not so simple. It is about professionalism too. Don't get too carried away GC. Builders also get a good wack. Ever seen a broke builder? | wageslave
12/11/2002 23:21 | It's a fact, a labourer on a building site is more likely to be killed or seriously injured. Perhaps they should be paid 40k? LOL | goodcall
12/11/2002 23:17 | Sparky ""No! the government are. They could bring in laws to stop us but they would rather let someone die to gain political advantage."" The government aren't negotiating with lives...the fire service are. The government cannot allow a rise above 10%, because every public sector worker would want a pay award at this level...everyone is under valued, in the public sector. The argument that fire officers are risking their life, is not valid. Police officers risk their lives daily, as do soldiers, even nurses and doctors risk being killed in the line of duty........ If a fire officer dies or is seriously injured, then it's a problem with safety and becomes a 'health and safety' issue...I don't buy into the concept of severance pay. | adek
12/11/2002 23:15 | 11% is more than anyone else in the public sector has been offerd. Take it ... You are no more a special case than the rest of us ..... | ![]() custardpie
12/11/2002 23:13 | People become too complacent in their attitudes towards work and their supremacy. I am sure there are plenty of unemployed persons who would gladly swap unemployment benefit for 20k per annum. Times change. No person is immune to the new technology or working practices. This is just like the beginnings of the coal strike, people thinking nobody else can intervene | gypsy king
12/11/2002 23:07 | Good post GC ! | gypsy king
12/11/2002 23:04 | Send the troops in ! | gypsy king
