My company has lost 3 HGV drivers and 1 warehouseman in the line of duty in the last 10 years. Comparing to the list of FF deaths, this must make their jobs statistically much more dangerous than that of a fireman. Current pay £10-£16k.

Johnel

There are around 36,000 firemen, The department I worked in througout the 70's and 80's with only 5000 staff had more deaths per annum than the whole of the firebrigade. Mainly due to stress, and all under 50.
If the current payscales are not acceptable to firemen, then the only fair alternative is a pro-rata scale for actual fires/emergencies attended, with a lower annual basic.

Sounds like the perfect job for a post graduate student. A very good full time wage with 3 or 4 days a week free for study. Let's see whether the working hours change for the worse. If not then I'm very tempted myself.

Was it Mr Gilchrist who moved the goal posts or have the employers committed themselves to making an offer before the 13th, and Andy is allowing talks to continue?

FBU General Secretary Andy Gilchrist said "The employers have accepted there will be a new pay formula for the fire service linked to the pay of workers in the Associate, Professional and Technical grouping.

"The employers have also accepted our claim for pay parity for Retained Firefighters. They have asked us for more information regarding our claim for equal pay for Emergency Fire Control Staff, with a clear understanding that they will listen to our evidence for equal pay for these workers, who are predominantly women.

"The other issue, which needs to be discussed before the 13th November is the Level of Pay for our members. The employers have agreed to give us a clear offer on the level of pay before the 13th November. If this level is not acceptable the new 48-hour strike, set for 18.00hrs on the 13th will go ahead, as will all the other previously notified strikes."

He's a hero!

Sparky,boon.
I see from reading the press that Andy Pandy has moved the goal posts again and bottled out of the strike-and before you say Ah but were going to start walk outs on the 13th instead now....Hes having you on,and quite frankly the public and media are getting bored with it.
As regards the comment from Sparky, firemen are rated 18th on the most dangerous jobs list.....under farm workers and security guards.
Ive put the potted meat sandwiches and other picket line food in the freezer...doesnt look like you will be needing them now, plenty of nourishing food available in your well used rest room at the fire shop according to todays press.
Yours,j Levi.

Night care assistant 7K....WRONG
I know that for a fact, as my wife is one, I also share Sparky's sentiments, they are hardly high risk careers.

Theres a minor difference - other professions work for a living!

Credit Analyst 2 Yrs Experiance - 26K
Epidemiologist - PHD required - 26K
Mechanical Project Engineer 10 Yrs experiance & Degree - 30K

Boon,
the pay packets of others arnt the issue.I appreciate that you DO warrent a pay rise but 40% at once is not feasable, the pay increases of those workers that youve cited were not gained in massive rises but came in stages....surely you can see that!
Its your union thats let you down and youre praising them for doing it.I would suggest that you become a train driver if its money thats your main focus for becoming a fireman.

Boneyhead,
Im pleased that youre feeling a little better.Andy Gilchrist has done you a terrible diservice, hes sold you down the river-havent you clicked yet hes turned double agent.
Like lambs to the slaughter house..my thoughts and food parcels will be with you this Christmas;Id wager a bet that Andy has a rather more prosperous one than you and your fellow fire workers.Im going to sort out some packed lunches for you strikers-(its the least I can do)- would potted meat suffice-or chicken roll with stuffing.Itll be a lean Christmas for you,not so for Andy though, hell still be getting paid wont he..mmmmmmmmmmm
Have a super Chrismas and wrap up warm.
Your old mate Jack Levi.

A new pay formula.
Parity for the Retained Firefighters.
Parity for Control staff.
And the Employers commitment to make a realistic offer by the 13th November.

Andy Gilchrist has played a blinder, he has done the Fire Service proud. And if the offer is not enough........we're out!

Kingfish; Couldn't agree more !!
I said this a while ago to sparky , this country just won't pay these people ,teachers , nurses , police , firemen ,it's always been the same . It's costing the NHS million to employ foreign nurses and doctor , some of which can't even speak enough English to be of any use , the was an opperation not long ago that had to be aborted , remember , becaue the nurses supporting the surgeon, anwered " ke ?"
30k is still not enough , 40 ,,again I say it is more like it !
In reality though I reckon they will settle for a 3/4 year deal amounting to 20/25%
can't see them getting mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 40% ,,,can you !!!
