12/11/2002 21:58 | Here here BB! | wageslave
12/11/2002 21:58 | well said bigboyo | sporting1
12/11/2002 21:54 | a fireman is worth 10 times the value of city spiv a nurse 20 times a gp 50 times we need a balanced more equitable distribution of wealth --- and that is what defines civil society from a barbaric one i hope tonies cronies see sense and give em 40% --- i for one am happy to pay more tax to see a better motivated and better trained bunch of public sector workers | bigboyo
12/11/2002 21:45 | Sparky.....respect to u...as I said let the barstewards burn....you are flogging a dead horse........until they start losing loved ones they will take all public services for granted.....-..sad but true....IMHO | forfaiter
12/11/2002 20:50 | That shut you up didn't it Fast player. Just give it a f8cking rest, it's boring and unimaginative. Idiot | the village idiot
12/11/2002 20:32 | Fast Player, at least give it a go. A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.......etc etc.... You know that I know who you are. Why are you doing this? Idiot | the village idiot
12/11/2002 20:26 | global Well you don't deserve it!!! | bradwell
12/11/2002 20:24 | I love the way you seem to think you are doing the public a favour turning up to do your job . If you dont want the job clear out and let some committed professionals take the positions . As has been mentioned , a lot of firefighters are poorly qualified and would earn less elsewhere . | snowmann
12/11/2002 19:42 | Sounds quite sensible working practice, I'd jump at it if I was a fireman, & 11% over two years when everyone else will be lucky to get 3.8% is more than generous. I can't see the government giving in over this one, most people would be overjoyed with those figures. | spongy2
12/11/2002 19:29 | Here are the main points of the interim review: Two stage pay increase totalling 11%. This would be made up of 4% with effect from November 2002 and 7% by next November - all dependent on accepting the reforms and implementing them swiftly Introduce flexible and "family friendly" shift patterns alongside the traditional two days on, two nights on, four days off Abolish "quasi-militaristic" discipline regulations and bring in modern personnel management practices Allow voluntary pre-arranged overtime Introduce "specialist" payments to reward scarce skills Accept the Fire Service's role extends to public safety beyond just putting out fires Maybe consider changing name from 'The Fire Brigade' to reflect this Abolish single level entry to encourage graduates or people from other professions to join the service Reform the pay and promotion structure to allow staff to move "laterally" and achieve pay rises within their grade Pay retained (part-time) firefighters the same, pro rata, as full time staff Encourage more women and people from ethnic minorities to join the service Allow staff to work off front line duties beyond current retirement age if they wish Allow firefighters to train as paramedics | snowmann
12/11/2002 18:40 | Spongy2, I hope you're right. Let's get one thing clear this is BLACKMAIL. It's simple. You don't give us what we want and we'll put your lives at risk. We're not interested in a 5 times inflation pay offer as we think we've got you by the b*lls. It's not like they've been offered nothing or are being badly treated. Like the country really needs this now. I hope Blair gives it tough to them just like their giving it tough to us. You've got a fire tough luck. Don't expect me to sympathise when they get their P45s. bomfin | bomfin
12/11/2002 18:30 | I've heard that the fire engines are going to be removed from fire stations, sometime during the second strike. The firemen will return to work to find only army lorries to polish. The army will retain the big red engines until strike action is called off. | spongy2
12/11/2002 16:36 | You need to train people ..cant do it while they being used . | snowmann
12/11/2002 16:34 | One thing the Govnt should do in future is upgrade Green goddesses to modern fire tenders so that the army are familiar and trained on modern systems . Why not use the ones sat idle in the stations? | maxheadroom
12/11/2002 16:20 | Snowman, the fbu is already effectively broken, the retained firemens union is gaining strength everyday as disillusioned fireworkers who see the strike as the last nail in the coffin vote with their feet. Gilchrist has been done up like a kipper,he hasnt yet clicked to the fact that a strike is just what the government excpected....and has been preparing for ever since the talks began.Expect sackings in eight weeks time....the training period is coincidentaly eight weeks also. The retained firemen are already training new staff.....theres no lack of potential recruits - 46 to every place, and whats more the new pay rise is pushing up the waiting list to get in even higher, plenty of overtime and a teriffic pension scheme - a job for life.I just wish I was a little younger! jack levi. | jaxaxe
12/11/2002 16:20 | Bradwell Yes. I earn my living trading full time and have been for the past two and a half years. And yes I do earn more more than firemen but not by much. | globaltraderix2
12/11/2002 15:42 | One thing the Govnt should do in future is upgrade Green goddesses to modern fire tenders so that the army are familiar and trained on modern systems . Regardless of the outcome of this action , it is clear the fire brigade is being lead by a politically motivated leadership , therefore the Govnt should prepare to break the fire brigade union so the public cannot be blackmailed in future . | snowmann |
