CT, value will out. Loads of advertising here in London. Those punters who took flight only from Monarch will probably go package now to get the ATOL protection. One thing to consider is a name change to Jet2 as the FW is now almost an insignificant part of the business.

CT,
Re 3287

But then we booked three weeks ago a direct flight to Madeira for £250 return in peak half term. And that's a 3h40m flight.

maybe it got ahead of itself two years ago.
I see a low in this period of about 330p.

The interview quoted on here was the answer. ( FT )
DART is unknown to those in the South.

That will change.

Shining shoes and brown noses - lethal combination innit. While the whole world on here is so happy a careful evaluation of cold facts reveal that share price has gone nowhere for two years (way below all time highs). And boy don't a few pay attention to day moves in the stock market!

Cheers AH, I'm thinking now that we'll be in Brexit transition for some time and not worried about that.

I have a lingering concern about the current situation in Catalonia and that people may forgotten about the horrors of the Spanish Civil War; for which there's never been a truth or reconciliation and that has left both sides nursing grievances.

Many things have happened in the last few years that I didn't think possible.

Just look at that link.
You cannot get flights.
Friends paying 350 each return from Faro.

An excellent start to the winter 6 month period. If they had spare planes they would be flying

With only 13% of the market there's still so much to go! Fear not, the High Priest of tea leaves saw this coming and went long last week.

Not a single mention on ftalphaville re DART group.
The figures quoted on that chart are years out of dart.
Monarch 5% they took only 100k holidays last year according to their figures I had it higher at 300k or 5% of 6,000,000 total flights.

So taking my figure which is 3 x higher than theirs.
Dart flew 1.7 million last year and it will be 2.5 m this year.

They say we have 13% so 3x monarch figure. Well someone is way out here.

I think DART is no 2 now and guess what this southern boys have missed it.
Missed why Monarch have failed. Simply we are doing a much better job.
Growth which next year could be 20% again on holidays to 3 million.
That's almost a doubling in 2 years.
ALL UNDER THE RADAR.

That's why the price has been stuck because we are based in Leeds its missed.

JET2 have just announced thousands more flights and holidays for the winter period to plug the hole.
They talk about BA getting some passengers NAW.........we will nail at least 1-3 million of this business.
A brand you can trust and a holiday safe.

A serious re rating should now be underway.
Prices will go up but my £10.00 target by 2020 is under review.

Any shorters left after todays action?

The irony is that Jet2 is pursuing a similar strategy to Monarch: airline and package holidays. Monarch had Cosmos holidays and then abandoned it. Jet2 has come in and made a much better job of it. Not sure how Monarch would fit with Jet2 from a technical perspective as Mony fly Airbuses and Jet2 is Boeing. That said, Luton would be v attractive for Jet2 and Luton Airport would probably like another a carrier apart from EZJ. This also doesn't sort out Ryanair's issue with pilots as it also flies Boeing.

mony has also a thumping great pension issue!

Not a "nice thing" but these shake outs take the weaker players out of the market. Low Cost Holidays last year I think and now Monarch. Customers tend to have higher prices as a result. However, the remaining players will be more stable and unlikely to go under. I couldn't see how Monarch could compete with the Ryanair/easyJet's of this world. Jet2.com and Jet2holidays expansion was probably the final nail in the coffin. Amazed that Greybull would fund Monarch. In my view the company was a bit like Woolworths or BHS. Lacking a strong unique selling point for consumers or a strong competitive position.

Firstly can I offer my thoughts to the excellent front line staff at Monarch.
They offered things that not even Jet 2 can do such as a fixed no of extra legroom seats on every flight.
I used them and they were good.
I also had my worst issue with them arriving at Man for a 6.00 am flight to Faro that eventually left at 11.00 pm. Not a happy bunny.

What went wrong

Well much too late getting into the low cost flight market and only 5% of seats used for holidays. Just 100k a year and we will do 2.5 m this year.
They kinda of sat in no mans land.

After the 165m bail out last year nothing changed.

so my thoughts on main failure reasons

Too slow to move from mid market to low cost.
Some bad luck....when their main markets were taken off sale. Sharm nov 2015
Then in 2016 Turkey fell into security issues.
They then moved to spain and Portugal but all that did was push fares lower.
Brexit not a major reason but it added costs.

I knew the game was up last year when the CAA spent 25m getting planes out to rescue people only for greybull to put in 165m at the last hour.
Last night as the fleet once again took off from Qatar I knew it was game over.

It was 4.00 am before it was announced as all aircraft have to be on the ground,.

I note we have added a further plane now a fleet of 75 and I expect this to give us a boost as both Ryan and now Mon customers try to find flights.

Sad for Monarch travellers but excellent news for Dart. Flight prices must now have upwards pressure which will go straight to the bottom line.

They were too late to the 'low cost' party. People didn't look at them because they just assumed they would be more.

meijiman - In my view, Monarch didn't really have a brand or a specific approach. Dart Group had a clear strategy. Jet2.com is a budget airline and Jet2holidays offers inexpensive package holidays using Jet2.com. Monarch was a weak player with a very poor brand and a lack of focus. I am surprised Monarch lasted so long to be honest. It was a throw back to package holidays from the 1970's.

I did wonder if this could be the answer to Ryanair's pilot shortage until I realised that Monarch flew Airbus'. Interestingly they are shown to have ordered 45 Boeing 738s for delivery from mid next year.

How can two players in the same industry be having such contrasting fortunes? What went wrong at Monarch?
