Copper Mine Flashes Warning of ‘Huge Crisis’ for World Supply

The transition to clean energy depends on copper, but a vast Mongolian mining project offers a glimpse of the metal’s troubled future.

Its the low cost production bit I like. So long as we can produce cheaper than most of the competition, it does not matter much whether copper prices soar or not. In fact, steady prices suit us - we make good profits without copper prices which invite 'windfall' taxation, increased licensing fees etc.

I don't think Caml directors have any doubts. They had a record year just gone and are guiding for similar this year as one of the cheapest producers. They are looking to grow bigger with acquisitions and talk of a billion dollar market cap in the future. In the meantime a Divi around 9% yield at around 2/3 of recent high.

I don't know what to think. Recession fears inevitably weigh on the price of copper, likewise uncertainty about the Chinese economy - China has been a huge copper consumer for years. I do wonder though if the 'green revolution' is going to be as big or as soon as we have been led to believe. There is huge investment going into gas in the USA, but I don't see as much evidence of miners looking to ramp up copper production. With a time frame of 10 to 20 years to bring a new copper mine into production every man and his dog ought to be prospecting for and moving toward new copper production in order to cash in during the decade 2040 /50 when electrification should be going full blast worldwide. Do copper miners doubt the political narrative?

Every company in the sector is down a similar amount. Fidelity obviously not helping the situation here. But there's nothing alarming about this decline. Hard part is picking the bottom so it's an average in strategy for me and let's hope this brief weakness in copper spots gives caml an opportunity to snap up some additional reserves.

Some figures from the presentation:
Kounrad Cu mine EBITDA margin = 77% Sasa = 57%
Life of mines Kounrad 2034, SASA 2039
Last 10 years Cu production 138395 tons av cost $1100 present selling price $8000
FCF $90M after significant capex 47% paid in divis
$60M dollars in the bank
Anyone watching, the question on acquisition funding was answered by the FD not NR and he said bank lending rates above base haven't changed for CAML and cheaper than equity. The words early stage, opportunistic and accretive were also used, obviously mining is an ongoing search for new prospects to replace worked out mines.
No investment advice intended, watch the video (speed up if you're in a hurry), listen to the questions and/or look at year end report on Caml website

That belief implies that Nigel Robinson lied on a video I watched only yesterday when he said that equity raising is expensive compared to the prospect of buying from profits as they have done with Sasa. Caml is one of the highest margin producers in the world. Maybe the City vultures think that he's desperate and they see an opportunity to crash the share price and raise millions for their pals. No chance imho, watch the recent video on Investor meet company.

The share price has fallen 30% in the last 3 months despite continuing good performance and strong cash generation.
Question: Should I buy more now or wait for the highly dilutive fund raising to finance an ill advised aquisition that Mr Market believes is coming?

I had planned to buy today but
there's no bounce yet and
it looks like it's still heading for 200p.
Perhaps a little more patience called for.
