I should add: the price falls when ethical or worried about legislation investors sell off, not because of problems with trading, but concerns either about health issues and supporting a business that sells product causing ill health(/death)or that are financially worried that government legislation will impact profitability. The first is a given, and the second an unknown. You pays your money and you takes your choice or, in this case, chance.

Time for those without a heavy holding to buy or buy more. I'm already so overloaded that simply can't add any more: but the high regular reliable dividend is very nice, thank you!

whatever they ban you get mafia and cartels running the business when it gets to that level the law enforcement has no chance, everybody gets bribed like politicians, police, judges, people get shot up all over the place. It all becomes damage limitation because they cannot ever stop it yet government agencies keep trying, they never learn from history. Keep it legal, keep it regulated there is control.

FDA seen taking action on tobacco

Jul. 24, 2019 9:12 AM ET

Tobacco stocks are on watch after Citi warns that the FDA is "closer" to taking regulatory action.

The FDA is also launching its first TV ads to fight teen vaping. The $60M FDA initiative called "The Real Cost" features new commercials featuring street magician Julius Dein using tricks to educate teens on the risks of e-cigarettes.

How vaping has REVERSED the fall in nicotine use and tobacco giants are cashing in on the surprising trend

Documents published by British American Tobacco show the emergence of vaping has reversed a decline in nicotine use

Both BAT and rival Imperial Brands state that vaping is 'additive' for their firms
This indicates that e-cigarettes are helping tobacco firms to boost revenues

A little more colour care of Yahoo finance

Shares of British American Tobacco climbed 7% after the global tobacco giant's investors responded favorably to good news from one of its biggest competitors. Philip Morris International reported its second-quarter financial results this morning, and although its overall revenue was slightly lower compared to year-earlier results, top-line growth amounted to 9% after accounting for various accounting-related shifts, and adjusted earnings were far better than expected. Investors in British American took its rival's results as a sign that the global tobacco market remains healthier than some had feared, and they'll have an opportunity to see if the company can confirm their hopes when it reports half-year results later this month.

Judge sets deadline for e-cig makers to apply for FDA approval

A Maryland district court judge has set a deadline of May 12, 2020 for e-cigarette makers to file marketing applications with the FDA in order to keep their products on the U.S. market. The deadline is consistent with the agency's June proposal for a 10-month window.

Piper Jaffray via FT Markets Live:

While we expect some continued top-line and margin momentum, our growth outlook is tempered by softer US expectations, and we now see relatively little upside to current valuation. iQOS and JUUL remain the most proven reduced risk platforms, and BAT continues to compete against both. US retail sales trends give us greater cause for concern as declines have accelerated, even ahead of the upcoming US iQOS launch. We lower our US growth expectations but increase our 2019E EPS from 310.0p to 316.5p and 2020E EPS from 328.5p to 338.0p, as better currency more than offsets our cut to underlying earnings. We lower our price target from £33 to £31 and downgrade our rating to Neutral.

Competing with JUUL, iQOS in the US looks daunting. iQOS and JUUL stand out as the two reduced risk products with the most significant traction with consumers, with JUUL reaching $4B in annualized US retail sales and iQOS posting over $7B of revenues in 2018. iQOS is now set to launch in the US, where BAT's cigarette declines are already accelerating. The US is BAT's highest margin segment, and its highest margin US brands appear to have the most acute market share pressure (Natural American Spirit retail sales fell in the latest 4 week period - a first). JUUL is making a push outside the US, though nicotine level restrictions may limit its growth in many markets abroad.

Currency adds upside to our estimates, but fundamental outlook softer. We lower our EPS outlook on a softer US outlook by 3.5p in 2019 and 5.0p in 2020, which is more than offset by favorable currency of 10.0p in 2019 and 14.0p in 2020. Brexit uncertainty may add a further currency lift to EPS (especially in a hard Brexit scenario), but our focus is on underlying fundamentals, where risks appear to be growing, especially in the US, as BAT's US trends erode at a faster pace than we had expected (charts inside).
