FDA/CDC team up with states to investigate e-cig link to respiratory disease

The FDA announces that it, the CDC and state and local health officials are investigating cases of respiratory disease associated with the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs), adding that it recently learned of a death of an adult in Illinois who had been hospitalized with a severe respiratory illness after using an e-cig product.

Broker Liberum said there is some risk that the combined Philip Morris could be a more effective competitor to BAT and Imperial Brands both in the US as well as in other key markets.

"Clearly a successful merger would crystallise the need for both companies and Japan Tobacco to seek out new ways to unlock value," it said.

"However, the old regulatory hurdles surrounding material market share overlaps in several markets persist meaning that and M&A scenario remains complicated, particularly for BAT. Therefore, we see the potential for both BAT and Imperial Brands shares to come under some pressure if it looks likely that the merger of equals proceeds without a hitch.

Bigger Tobacco

Former partners Altria Inc. and Philip Morris International Inc. are considering getting back together in a deal that will once more reshape the global tobacco market. Wall Street is divided on the issue, with investors questioning whether this is a good plan given the regulatory scrutiny it would face and, indeed, the regulatory scrutiny the whole industry faces all the time.

For Europe’s tobacco names, it would create an even bigger competitor as everyone races for supremacy in the next generation of vaping and smokeless products, so watch closely for a reaction.

This is what the US market thought of the news regarding the merger

'' Shares of Altria fell 4% to $45.25 on Tuesday, while Philip Morris dropped 7.8% to $71.70.''

like buywell said mergers are not a very good idea

That's gone down like a sack of sh1te.

"In US company news, shares in Altria were up 6.4% and Philip Morris International down 9.6% after the two confirmed merger talks.

"If the all-stock merger of equals goes through, the combined company could be worth in excess of USD200 billion.

"In London, Lucky Strike owner British American Tobacco - which is heavily exposed to the US - sank 4.7% on the news."

Philip Morris (PM -9.1%) would have an ownership stake of 52% in the new company if a merger with Altria (MO +6%) is finalized, sources tell Bloomberg.

The deal is expected to go off without a premium to the share prices last Friday. The goal would be to close the transaction within six months.

Wells Fargo, fresh off reading the tea leaves correctly yesterday, says it sees significant value creation for Altria and Philip Morris shareholders.
