IG market analyst Chris Beauchamp said: "British American Tobacco had rallied hard into today’s trading update, so the ‘steady as she goes’ message was unlikely to inspire short-term traders to hold on to their positions. Having declared that the second half will see new products come to the rescue, the firm has set a very high bar for itself, which might come back to haunt them in due course."

With sterling rise, divi yields increases for overseas holders, this should offset share price price fluctuations to some extent.

The consolidation may see lower revenues and profits, at least in the short term.

Jack, in a nutshell. Unfortunately it's difficult to avoid exposure
if holding UK equity income funds.

True, between 2000 to mid 2017,BATs was a tremendous performer, the best performer in the FTSE100.However,in the last two years, the shares have near halved from a peak of around £58.There could be a real and enduring sea change here, despite the dividend appeal.

this_time, yes it will along with IMB and what with them both being out of favour as well I can see a re-test of the lows at about 23.80 to 24.00

Before I get hammered, yes I do hold and have added along the way and now have quite a large holding of these, so I do want them up.

The tobacco company said it was continuing to "perform well" and left its full-year guidance unchanged, but warned it expects annual global industry sales volume to be down around 3.5%. ......industry volumes forecast to be down between 4% and 5% on the year prior

Won't this get hammered as sterling rises from labour removing no deal from the table?

Add in dividends to those charts, buywell. I've held BATS since 2003 and they've returned me 18% a year since then. If only all my investments had been this dire :-)

"Full-year revenue on a constant currency basis is expected to meet the mid-upper half of the group's long-term guidance for growth of 3% to 5%."

OMG SELL SELL SELL! Volumes are declining, more litigation, this is very different than what has been happening the past 20 years!

Another tobacco long term chart that looks dire as well as IMB

A comparison

2014 2900p support looks like being tested again

Then the 2500p recent support will IMO get tested within 6 months

With the Canadian $16bn legal action V 3 tobacco companies now in it's final appeal stage , result next year , this industry looks set to test historical chart lows next year IMO.

Hence buywell makes a call on BATS and please don't ball me out for saying it:

1500p within 12 months = 50% retrace

Update not seen as good news

Tobacco sales ARE on the decline

Litigation is on the increase

Now litigation V Vaping products is on the increase

And the FDA is going to be forced to take a long hard look at vaping toxicity issues
which have never been tested for.

IMB catching the BATS fallout today

Liberum reiterating 'buy'

Market report:

British American Tobacco was down 1.5% despite saying Wednesday it continues to "perform well" with both traditional and new products delivering.

BAT described itself as "on track" to deliver constant currency revenue growth in the "mid-upper half" of its 3% to 5% long-term guidance range for 2019. This was despite global industry volumes being expected to fall by around 3.5% on the year prior.

BAT also anticipated "good" operating margin improvement in 2019. This is despite further investment in its New Categories, which includes vaping, heat-not-burn and other new products lines. All told, BAT forecasts constant-currency adjusted operating profit to deliver growth in the "upper half" of its 5% to 7% guidance range.

with funds struggling to get the yield in the general market as the head winds mount Tobacco will be the only stock market haven left with revenues increasing YoY. You are not going to get addicts saying I'm cutting back on my addiction because of the recession they smoke more through the stress of it all :-)

"Investors in Tobacco stocks, in particular, were breathing easier, amid 'market chatter' referencing a bullish note out of Barclays, according to which the US Food&Drug Administration was unlikely to ban menthol cigarettes over the next 12 months".
