Does the guy have to eat a lot of beans first in order to do this?

Funny, this post seems to follow on rather nicely from the previous.

For the benefit of those that haven't a scooby doo about Pesco and the EU defence structures UK is being signed up to - and its impact on defence procurement!!!

A range of new EU deals struck in 2017 push the EU’s Common Defence Policy a long way towards its destination of ‘Common Defence’ – the Lisbon Treaty term for a unitary military.

Within a year of the Brexit vote, Theresa May and her ministers had incredibly signed up to five separate EU Council agreements transferring military powers to the European Commission. The PM’s withdrawal proposals now seek to keep the UK in EVERYTHING which has been agreed since November 2016.

The agreements place the UK into the EU’s military integration project, with serious consequences for UK defence autonomy and defence procurement. It all appears to have been kept out of MPs sight or at least filtered so they don’t understand the gravity of the power transfer.

Put simply, they are stitching up the negotiations by making the UK subordinate to new structures, budgets, policies, directives and financial payments.

"Think I'll take the advice of a Major general or two thanks who know what they;re talking about"

Major General Julian Thompson, chairman of the Veterans for Britain research group and a former Royal Marines commander, commented on the recent Merkel remarks.

"Then we have:"

Since the referendum, ministers joined the European Defence Fund, Military Planning and Conduct Capability (military HQ) and the European Defence Industrial Development Programme. These along with the EU Common Security and Defence Policy and its EU Battlegroups are all components of EU Defence, which centralise EU militaries in a structure with ‘decision-making autonomy from NATO’.

Claim: “Being outside of PESCO means the UK is outside of military union.”

This is not the case because outside of PESCO (the agreement on Permanent Structured Cooperation), ministers are still proposing to remain subordinate to EU defence and foreign policy, defence industry rules, defence budgeting schemes, new controls on central financing and a commitment to payments. There are also compromising EU requirements over intelligence, space and strategy.

Although the UK is outside PESCO – the final layer of icing atop the EU Defence ‘cake’ – ministers have incredibly committed to operating ‘through PESCO’, therefore committing the UK to its onerous participation rules including continued subordination to EU defence and foreign policy and EU defence directives which have harmed UK industry and jobs.

"The UK armed forces are tied to Europe through NATO and nothing more."

Precisely what I want going forwrd but Pesco +Withdrawal Agreement together would tie us into EU army. Suggest you go take a lookski.

Veterans for Britain arent a Right Wing group fyi.

Theyre just ex Veterans worried about the EU defence structures and how they suck UK into them is all..

"BAE need customers for its products, I leave it to those whos job its is to make the products and sell them as to where our market is"

Don't dispute that

As to the political angle it's very pertinent to BAe as all defence contracts under the EU defence structures we are adopting have to be open tender across Europe.

Which means BAE has far more competition for the larger contracts than it otherwise would?

Arent you concerned about such?

You know those new aircraft carriers BAe building - well post UK defence integration into EU defence structures they'd have to be put out to tender - so Thales or the like might well win the whole contract.

Not worried? I would be. And I'm Long BAE.

Politics is intricate to defence sector.

Lol, I dont need to approach that political Group, nor have anything to do with them thanks. Have you ever served in any of the services? Dont go believing all of the right wing, anti everything European brigade. The UK armed forces are tied to Europe through NATO and nothing more.

BAE need customers for its products, I leave it to those whos job its is to make the products and sell them as to where our market is.

Please take your politics to your other boards.

@Ribble

"As for becoming closer aligned to EU defence structure, where and how do you get that?"

I suggest you go read the fine print of Withdrawal agreement and all the associated PESCO documentation that Lawyers have said tied UK Armed Forces into EU defence strustures - with EU determining their deployment.

Not rubbish you'll find.

And a worrying trend.

Go ask Colonel Kemp / Veterans for Britain. I'm sure they'll be happy to have the relevant information sent to you!

Hmm. I didn't think these BBs were intended for political discussions but...

I'd rather be tied into the EU Defence structure than into the Russian one."

Is that not what NATO is for?
Comparing EU defence structure to Russian one is a false comparison surely?

"If Putin went for it, Trump is unlikely to object"

Evidence?

"We need a strong EU Defence structure and we need to be part of it."

No we don't

Thats rubbish. If we want to sell anything to EU after we leave the EU the goods will have to comply with EU regs irrespective. As for becoming closer alligned to EU defence structure, where and how do you get that? NATO will still function, our leaving the EU wont change that.
Even if it did, I totally agree with daijavu.

Bigger markets are open already.

This ties us into European defence consolidation, EU defence structures, and British Army beign subsumed into EU one and being deployedwithout UK's say so

Check out the Pesco manoeuvres..and closer EU defence integration structures.
This move is part of that.

Rheinmetall AG (RHM.XE) and BAE Systems PLC (BA.LN) are to create a U.K.-based joint venture for land systems, the German company said Monday.

Its headquarters will be based at BAE Systems' facility in Telford, England.

It will sustain more than 400 jobs in the country, Rheinmetall said.

Rheinmetall is to purchase a 55% stake in the existing BAE Systems U.K.-based combat vehicles business, with BAE Systems retaining 45%, Rheinmetall said.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the joint venture will be called Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land, or RBSL, once fully formed. Regulatory approvals are expected to be completed in the first half of 2019, Rheinmetall said.

1621 - cufflinks would say that, it is all bluster, and highly unlikely that an aerial war will be won in the skies above the US, that is why they have aircraft carriers, although maybe not much use against a hypersonic missile!
