Government ‘hiding behind EU rules’ to offshore shipbuilding contracts say union.

Unions have told Ministers that shipbuilding in Britain could face multiple yard closures in 2019 if they continue to use European regulations to avoid building support vessels in the UK.

Ribble it is on my microscope watch list , been on it for yrs , but now when I go down to the recent history list at the bottom of the page , the BB list seems to have been rearranged and there is an irritating list of those threads by Indianspan and others.
This morning it seems to be rearranging itself by recency again ; yours , having disappeared altogethor is top again. Haven't changed any settings. Same on some shares but not others.

Don't know why this thread , like several others , has disappeared off the BB list. I accessed it by browser history. SSE similar.

An interesting article......
The Galileo affair, what should UK do now?

What should be the UK’s response to being shut out of the secure systems of the Galileo satellite constellation?

The prospect of Brexit has presented myriad difficulties, including what to do about the UK’s imminent exclusion from the development of EU’s satellite navigation system, Galileo.

I think we should get together with the Russians , the Chinese and Saudi to develop a new generation fighter. Think of the cost savings.

bookbroker - the thing is, if the UK allow the capability to disappear from a home grown company, it is gone ie. for both now and the future we would be reliant on the US, when the US might wish to, let's say 'allow assets to be used only where and when it forwards US policy'. That's why.

Squids - understand your point, but I kinda think it’s crazy that we are trying to develop our own aircraft, incredibly costly and risky, US has latest generation fighters which are acquiring, so why not just purchase from them, far more cost effiecient, although BAe learns a lot the US would never buy planes from us!

bookbroker - I doubt the UK MoD would like to rely on it's key defence contractor being American, why do you think they are planning on developing their own next gen aircraft?

There is however, a substantial portion of BAES selling to the Pentagon (BAE Systems Inc), which may be something to consider and attractive to other US Primes.

Whichever company sells the aircraft then they bank the management fees ideally 10% of the order

Thought it was £5bln., a year or two back a merger between EADS and BaE was considered, too many cross border issues, but an American merger or takeover would be more suitable, however job losses would have to worked out, politically very difficult, but they have a large business over the pond, but why should obstacles be a stumbling block?

Then its not 100% profit for UK. Its divied up between the partners (not equally but I do not know the ratio!).

This company should look towards a merger off some sort, ok maybe the pension deficit slightly off-putting, but higher rates should be off some benefit, but it would be better as a larger entity, despite the national interest!

The internet, social media, encryption, cyber crime – the world is changing fast. Technology is rapidly evolving and the task of analysing growing volumes of data is increasingly complex. The job of defending nations, government, critical national infrastructure and citizens is harder than it’s ever been.
