Allianz will never buy a firm with a large Life business. They can't get any value out of it.

Obviously, that doesn't preclude buy and break up... but they won't buy Aviva as an ongoing concern.

The question for anyone other than traders is not whether the current price will rise or fall next week, it is whether the current price is set to recover over the next 5 years. To me (as a former underwriting director) it looks a silly valuation looking beyond the current situation. For a company like Aviva there are pluses and minuses in day to day matters (investment and fee losses in equities but possible mark to market gains in bonds, probable hit to business insurances but lower claims likely on motor covers, life cover claims but compensated by reduction in pension liabilities etc). And Aviva will continue to have a strong capital position. Add in that the current market cap is substantially below net tangible assets (never mind total net assets), although I expect revaluations from current circumstances. I topped up my holding (unfortunately at 280 rather than the bottom!) for my income portfolio and am happy to hold for the duration. I will add more if it falls further (but will buy L&G to spread my holdings otherwise).

When this all pans out there will be players like Allianz with money to burn on acquisitions and either Aviva will recover back to the 400+ mark or they will be snapped up.

Would A company share buy back scheme be a good idea to help raise the SP?
Assuming that they have a war chest

Spud. A lot of folks knock Aviva because it’s done very little in the last few years in regards to getting back to it’s highs and also it’s results,dividend,P/E and price compared to its peers often seems ridiculous and in all fairness you would have expected it to have been way higher before the crash and that does make you wonder. The market is looking two years ahead with there pricing before it finds a bottom we could be at that point now it’s very pessimistic out there so who knows.

Trev. If it's fundamentally undervalued then it'll be bought out. It hasn't been yet so all I can surmise from that is that it's fair value (current price aside). spud

The other problem here is Aviva only seems to follow the market down and does not seem to follow the market up any gains are very temporary and are probably shorts closing before they begin again. To hold the gains the markets must believe in the endless supply of cash that’s on offer and also believe they have factored in the future impacts on profits.

There is undoubtedly fear and panic out there and the global impact will be large, however cases in South Korea are levelling off and the Italian peak may just have been reached.

If we are about 8 to 10 weeks from peak here, then the impact will be considerably less than the 2008.09 crisis and within 12 months things back to relatively normal.

Good well managed companies with cash in the bank will survive, some heavily indebted ones won't. Good buying opp for in the next couple of weeks

Rise because Trump is acting decisively against Covid-19.

Now Boris has done the same, I expect a good reaction on Monday. Probably... :))

Rises like that sit uncomfortable with me.

The market is fickle and unsubstantiated in much of its behaviour.

Madness, the out look is so grim, I can't see the DOW holding those gains next week. The threat to profits is real and unknown

My plan was to wait a bit but I've used half of my alloted Aviva funds today at 269

See what happens but either way it's a good price for a business this steady.

I don't expect much so growth in the short term (never expect much here fullstop) but divi is more than silly.

I am with Adam B on this. I think there will be another leg down before we are done and the ftse will go sub 5000 briefly. Maybe 4800 but I cannot be specific.
We are about 12 weeks from peak Covid here although other countries are ahead and behind this figure. In 6 months people will be wanting to spend and have holidays again but the next 6 months will be highly disruptive especially for companies selling consumer discretionaries and travel and leisure.
Now is a good time to pick up some shares if you are not too bothered about catching the low.
