It doesn't mention the efficiency of their FC, it states this is there first field trial so about year behind AFC. Who's FC is in final testing stage before mass production, design stage if fixed for first production model.

Is the ACAL system just an early stage Alpha test and only 6% the size of AFC's more advanced Beta fuel cell that has already undergone Alpha testing.

How the monkeys get away with dropping the share price 8% in order to fill a 200K order is beyond me ... pure market manipulation

New Tech.... Thanks for the info, I think that AFC is being hit by the FC credibility problem, mainly due to Ceres announcing a delay in delivering a ready to use home power plant heating system.

I feel that AFC maybe being dragged into the presumption that they will need more funds, however, the company has said it does not want to dilute existing share holders holdings, I can only see this for the slow decline in share price

Once the testing at Akzo Nobel is complete and comes back with positive news, until then I feel we will be held with suspicion as to actually ever developing a fulling working commercial FC by the market, as other FC companies are.

I feel the JLP deal could be the best for AFC, it will involve revenue and with out having to really ramp up production, if successful other major supermarkets may see this an easy option to reduce there CFP, plus providing heat, electricity and water.

Tees Valley (Hersham) Power Station for Municipal Solid Waste, where AFC expect to deploy their fuel cells (thread heading Point 2) now has planning permission:

Air Products website:

"Air Products is proposing to develop a 49MW power plant on Teesside. It will be located on industrial land, known as the Reclamation Pond site, adjacent to the North Tees Chemical Complex near Billingham. The proposed facility would use advanced gasification technology to provide renewable electricity for up to 50,000 homes in the North East. The project will create between 500 - 700 jobs during its construction and 50 permanent jobs once it enters commercial operation.

The proposed plant would divert non-recyclable waste (i.e. household, commercial and industrial waste left over after recycling) from landfill area for the production of renewable energy. Longer term, this plant would have the potential to generate a renewable source of hydrogen for commercial use, for example to fuel public transport.

The proposed facility has been granted planning approval from Stockton Borough Council and subject to financing of the project and securing an environmental permit from the Environment Agency we plan to start commercial operations in 2014".

Waste2Tricity's website:

"With planning permission now in place, once construction is finalised, Air Products's Tees Valley Renewable Energy Facility will generate 49MW of renewable power. In the longer-term, Air Products' plant has the potential to produce renewable hydrogen and is being considered for a demonstration of W2T's fuel cell technology. This would involve alkaline fuel cells from AFC Energy generating power, alongside more conventional CCGT [combined cycle gas turbines], using hydrogen separated from the syngas stream.

The facility's conversion technology employs Alter NRG's Westinghouse plasma assisted gasification, deployed in a newly designed G65 vessel - making Tees Valley the largest plant built so far using this proven technology. In all, between 300,000 and 350,000 tonnes of municipal and commercial waste will be turned into renewable power every year, diverting that waste from landfill.

Air Products proposed facility will demonstrate the environmental and commercial benefits of treating waste as a feedstock rather than simply as a problem to be inefficiently buried or burned with heat recovery. Construction Sector Boosted by Power Plant Approval
Northern Echo
11th August 2011

PLANS for an environmentally friendly power plant that could create 700 jobs in the region's hard-hit construction sector within months have been approved by councillors.

Chemical specialist company Air Products confirmed yesterday that Stockton Borough Council has granted planning permission for the Tees Valley Renewable Energy Facility.

The news is set to be welcomed by the region's construction workers with between 500 and 700 jobs expected to be created building the electricity generating plant near Billingham.

All the plant needs now is Environment Agency approval, which is on track to be granted by the end of the year, for construction to start early in the new year.

Air Products has already pledged to use local firms where possible and yesterday's announcement came as research by Experian showed that the North-East had endured the UK's highest rate of collapse for mid-sized construction firms, employing up to 100 people, since the start of the recession in 2007.

Last week, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in the North-East said there was a need for private sector work to boost themarket after a jump in the number of its members in the region reporting a drop in public sector contracts.

Steve Bradley, environmental advisor at Air Products, said: "We are well aware that the area has a range of construction and other more specialised process companies that are ideal.

"With the new technology we have very specialised work that we need to do but we are looking asmuch as possible to secure the construction and permanent jobs for the region."

About 50 permanent jobs will be created once the facility enters commercial operation, probably in 2014.

The advanced gasification plant will convert household and commercial waste into enough electricity to power 50,000 North-East homes, potentially diverting more than 300,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfill.

The firm has already hosted two public exhibitions and distributed leaflets to inform residents of its plans.

Ian Williamson, European hydrogen and bioenergy director at Air Products, said:"We're really pleased to have secured Stockton council's approval for our first energy from waste project in the UK.

"Air Products sees Tees Valley as the first of a number of advanced gasification facilities that we wish to develop in the UK. The UK is seeking more sustainable ways to manage and dispose of its waste, and is looking to diversify its sources of electricity generation. Our technology is to deliver on both counts."

Councillor Michael Smith, cabinet member for regeneration at Stockton council, said: "The Air Products' scheme is another significant step forward in strengthening Stockton's economy."

Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker added: "This new technology will be an exciting addition to the energy from waste sector and I look forward to seeing the announcement of more of these projects."

The scheme, first announced in July last year, was one of the last to receive financial support from the Tees Valley Industrial Programme.

It received £250,000 to carry out a feasibility study from the fund set up to generate employment opportunities after the Teesside Cast Products steel-making plant in Redcar was mothballed by Tata Steel, formerly Corus.
