08/7/2011 14:52 | Merchant Securities believes that the commercialisation of AFC Energy's (LON:AFC) 'Beta' fuel cell should see the groups regain 'top spot' in clean-tech investors' minds as they look for exposure to fuel cell related investments. | beeezzz
07/7/2011 14:49 | AFC Energy Set to Reveal its First Commercial Scale System Source : GuildfordAFC Energy, the world's leading developer of low cost alkaline fuel cells, is pleased to announce that it is currently commissioning its first commercial-scale, Beta, alkaline fuel cell system. This is a significant step for AFC Energy as the Company finalises preparations for commercialisation. AFC Energy is near to completing the Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study of its Beta fuel cell system, which involves an analysis of all foreseeable deviations and is necessary to achieve the second installation. The Beta system, which is being constructed at Dunsfold, Surrey, will provide the test bed for future developments prior to, or in parallel with, deployment at partners' premises. Today's announcement builds on a recent progress report from Dr Jon Helliwell, Project Manager of Fuel Cell Applications at the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI). Following a detailed assessment of AFC Energy's technical activity, Dr Helliwell's fifth report concluded that AFC Energy has made good progress on all actions needed to complete the HAZOP study. Ian Balchin, Deputy Chairman of AFC Energy, commented: "The Beta system is the tangible result of our continued rapid technical progress. With low lifetime-cost at its heart, this modular fully scalable fuel cell system is designed to place AFC Energy as a leader in clean energy generation." AFC Energy is inviting stakeholders to come and see the Beta system for themselves at the Company's premises in Dunsfold. Open days will be held in the autumn, at which places are expected to be in high demand. The rapid progress made by AFC Energy in the last few months has contributed to a number of key industry tie ups. Last month Linc Energy, the global leader in underground coal gasification, increased its shareholding in AFC Energy from 10 per cent to 12 per cent. Combined with funding from existing investors, this enabled the Company to raise £3.95 million net. Earlier this year AFC Energy announced a Memorandum of Understanding with leading retailer the John Lewis Partnership, to evaluate the economic potential of using one of its fuel cell system to generate low carbon emission electricity for Waitrose supermarkets and John Lewis stores. The Company also signed a binding Heads of Terms with N2telligence GmbH relating to the use of alkaline fuel cells for fire protection, opening up yet another avenue for AFC Energy's fuel cells. | rovi57
07/7/2011 14:26 | The diagram is basically a beta system holding just 1no cartridge, which has 100 cells (200 electrodes) on the stack with a power output of only about 10KW. A 2nd / 3rd / 4th etc cartridge will then be added over time (which may be days/weeks/months) increasing the power out put gradually. This will enable the test to be monitored and closely and performance data to be produced. Looking at the diagram I suggest what they mean by 'full compliment of power producing cartridges' is that they are planning to add a total of five cartridges for these tests i.e. 50KW. The great thing about the modular beta system is that cartridges can continue to be added so I suspect if things go as well as expected these initial cartridges will never be removed and will become part of the permanent commercial beta system at Akzo Nobel. More and more cartridges will just keep being added over time until as you say the original contracted commercial system is reached which is 1MW and then more until their plant requirement has been met. AFC need walk before they can run and therefore this gradual increase in power output will enable them to gain invaluable data on performance, reliability and durability. | rovi57
07/7/2011 12:29 | "Speculative Buy" says Growth Company Investor: | dashton42
07/7/2011 11:43 | So, does anyone know what this "beta system" actually is? Can't seem to find a spec on the website. AFC were talking about a 50kW system a long time ago, but is that what this is? | marben100
07/7/2011 11:26 | not impressed then? Rupert | rovi57
07/7/2011 09:29 | Completely laughable results. On a financial level cash burn is up, net assets are down and revenue is non existanct. On a practical level the Beta system thatwas promised for H1 still hasn't completed tests and is essentially now promised for H1 next year after tests are completed in H2 this year. This has 1p per share written all over it. This is a screaming SHORT. STRONG SELL | rupert the bear
07/7/2011 09:13 | Right again ... monkeys really do luv to play this to turn a nice profit | al h
07/7/2011 07:14 | AFC Energy (AIM:AFC), a world leading developer of alkaline fuel cells, is pleased to announce its Interim results for the six month period ended 30 April 2011. Highlights for the half year and period to end June 2011 - Commissioning of first Beta system - On track to deliver its commercial-scale Beta system once the HAZOP study is successfully complete - Further positive independent technology review - First patent granted - Cash balance 30 April 2011: £3.65 million (30 April 2010: 2.68 million) - Further £3.95 million inflow from share placing on 27 May 2011 - Memorandum of Understanding ("MOU") signed with John Lewis - Heads of Terms signed with N2telligence Tim Yeo, Chairman of AFC Energy commented "AFC Energy has continued to make excellent progress with its technical development over the last few months and this has been independently verified by Dr John Helliwell at the Centre for Process Innovation. In addition we are pleased to have been awarded our first patent. During the second half of this year we expect to begin testing our Beta system which will enable us to progressively refine the system for commercialisation. The wide range of potential applications for this low cost fuel cell system has been underlined once again by the additional agreements signed recently with John Lewis and N2telligence and the Board continues to look to the future with confidence". | dia43
05/7/2011 13:52 | Hopefully now Linc have taken another 2% holding in the company they will explain the reasons and whether they are still testing the alpha FC which I imagine they are and have been feeding information to AFC to ensure that the BETA is even better. | beeezzz |
