Definition of Escrow Account

An escrow account is a financial instrument held by a third party on behalf of the other two parties in any given transaction. The funds are held in this account until the necessary written or oral instructions are received or certain criteria have been met leading to a transaction. An escrow account can also be used to pay for certain obligations such as property taxes and insurance premiums.
