The tick up that we have been expecting - everybody hold their breath for the next week! Can we make the £1-00 and go on up this time?

Well as long as no one sells in the next few days, the price might rise very rapidly as it is rumoured in the times newspaper that one of the MMs (MLynch) is short of MSN stock. (Unless of course one of the MM tries to knock the price right down to shock some panic selling... in which case I'll just accumulate more cheap stock)

I agree, but every time it gets to the mid 90s someone sells. This can't go on for ever but could be a while.

This_is_me,

Once we break £1 then I reckon we will rise towards 120-130 swiftly.
This reminds me of NEW last year-look where they are now.
I hold both NEW & MSN!!

Good luck,

Tony

This is an informative article about the results. I caught some of the New Look recovery last year and Monsoon looks to have similar potential:-

...and I presume Tempus was on that list too.
Just put it this way, I don't think many of the banks/analysts made any correct predictions last year let alone those employed by the press. Most people got their predictions wrong about the retail sector fullstop, except those who bought into them, well done guys/gals!
So just how reliable is press comment? Read into and interpret the facts for yourself, and not rely on others potentially wrong/misleading/biased interpretations.

Disappointing that the price did not shoot up above £1-00 after the results - it will sooner or later. If the price should fall back from these levels I will buy more.

I see Monsoon gets an "avoid" from Tempus in the Times. Wasn't that what many were saying about New Look last year before it doubled?

Party frocks cheer Monsoon profits
By Nigel Cope, City Editor
22 January 2002
The sun has shone through at Monsoon with booming sales over Christmas, boosted by strong demand for party dresses.

Monsoon, best-known for its ethnic "hippy chic" style womenswear, reported an 18 per cent increase in half-year profits to £16.3m alongside one of the best Christmas trading updates the sector has seen this year. The group said underlying sales in the four weeks to 22 December were up 11 per cent on the same period last year. In the three weeks to 12 January underlying sales were up 35 per cent. Monsoon said the surge had been helped by "buoyant trading on the high street in general and by higher stock levels than last year reflecting our increased confidence in our ranges".

Monsoon is best known for its evening wear but Ms Foster has been working to improve the store's casual ranges since joining from the rival New Look fashion chain last year.

The company now has 145 Monsoon outlets with five more planned for the second half. There are 149 Accessorize outlets, which sell bags, belts, hats and other accessories with a further seven planned this year.

Last Autumn saw the launch of a new range called Monsoon Baby. The company said this had been well received and would be rolled out to 100 stores by the summer. Accessorize Angels, a range for young girls over three years old, has also done well and is now available in most stores in the chain.

Group sales in the six months to 24 November rose by 17 per cent to £99.5m. The shares climbed 7.5p to 93p.

Splashing out helps Monsoon
By Simon Goodley (Filed: 22/01/2002)

MONSOON, the UK fashion retailer, yesterday reported an 18pc rise in interim profits and hefty increases in sales since Christmas.

For the six months to November 24, pre-tax profits rose to £16.3m from £13.4m last time. Like-for-like sales increased by 11pc, with overall turnover up 17pc to £99.5m.

The company also reported strong January sales figures. For the three weeks to January 12, like-for-like sales were up by 35pc, with total sales increasing by 47pc.

From Sky News:

The retailer, which runs the Monsoon and Accessorize brands, said like-for-like sales in the six months to November 24 were up 11% on last year, and stayed at the same level in the four weeks of Christmas trading to December 22.

However, since then sales have rocketed, up 35% on a like-for-like basis in the three weeks to January 12, with total sales up 47%.

Monsoon attributed the rise to "buoyant trading on the high street in general and by higher stock levels than last year reflecting our increased confidence in our ranges".

It said margins were maintained during the strong pre-Christmas and sale periods and that sales of the spring stock was currently up on last year.

Two new ranges were launched in autumn 2001, Monsoon Baby and Accessorize Angels - a range for young girls over three years old. Today the group said Monsoon Baby had been well received and would now by available in 100 stores by the summer.

Accessorize Angels has been "hugely successful", it said, and is now available in most Accessorize outlets.

In the six months to November 24, four new Monsoon outlets and five concessions were opened, bringing the total to 145 stores. Five more are planned by the end of its financial year.

Accessorize opened eight new stores and there are plans for a further seven in the second half.

The group continues to expand overseas through franchise partnerships. It negotiated a new partnership in Saudi Arabia in the first half and said discussions are well under way to open in Italy and two other countries by the end of the year.

Stores in the US and some Middle East countries were knocked by the events of September 11, although Monsoon said it hopes that these will soon return to normal.

The shares were up 4.5p to 90p in early trading, giving a market value of £160m.

Before today's figures, analysts were forecasting full-year pre-tax profits of £26.3m and earnings per share of 9.93p. This would put Monsoon on a forward earnings multiple of just nine times - low for a star performer in the retail sector with further gains to come.

Monsoon also has net cash of £19.8m, up from £17.9m last year.

Sales flood in at Monsoon
By Laura Cummings

LONDON (SHARECAST) - Shares in clothing retailer Monsoon jumped 5% at the start of play today, boosted by strong half-year results and record sales over Christmas and the New Year and promises of more to come. MSN - Monsoon

Monsoon reports buoyant trading
By Lisa Clifford and Alison Smith
Published: January 21 2002 09:00 | Last Updated: January 21 2002 18:42

Monsoon, the UK women's wear retailer, on Monday reported an 18 per cent rise in interim profits and buoyant trading as strong demand across all product ranges lifted sales.

The company also reported good trading in the run-up to Christmas with like-for-like sales up 11 per cent in the four weeks to December 22 and total sales 16 per cent higher.

In line with other UK retailers, Monsoon enjoyed a successful sale, helped by buoyant conditions on the high street and higher stock levels than last year. Since Christmas, like-for-likes, which strip-out the effect of new space, have risen 35 per cent and overall sales are 47 per cent up.

Margins stayed firm during the holiday period and spring merchandise is in the stores and selling well.

"We're outperforming the market," said Andrew May, finance director. "The new developments we've made have been really working."

Comment

Monsoon's numbers are almost as glittery as some of its sequinned evening outfits. Encouraging are suggestions that the group has found some winning designs in day wear and has had the confidence to back them: one reason why last year's January sale was so poor was because the stores almost ran out of stock. Alongside the improvement in women's clothing come successful extensions of the brand in, for example, Accessorize Angels for little girls, and opportunities for further overseas moves.

Analysts raised pre-tax profit fore casts to £27.4m-£28.25m for the current year (£24.3m), giving a prospective multiple just below 9 times ‡ a discount to some other small clothing retailers, let alone the sector. At that level, the shares are worth a look for those willing to take on the risks of a small, illiquid company.

The stock is tightly held, as Peter Simon, chairman, owns just over 60 per cent. Those who wait for confirmation of the improvement at the full-year may not find the share price as low again.
