27/8/2017 13:37 | Thanks Apad. Sold my BOO way too early even though I said I would leave half to run and never sell. That plan did not work. Should have stuck to it. Still a profit is a profit. Could have been a much more significant one. | lauders
27/8/2017 13:30 | It's not all that informative, L. I've been musing on BOO. The warehouse increase is maybe game changing if they can maintain their grip on fashion for breeding age females. I'm on 444% Gain (18% of portfolio) and thinking of increasing on the current share price plateau. I seem to have transmogrified and I'm not sure what into. I have come to think that this phase is just the start. The Carol Kane articles in the fashion press are spectacularly good. I was blown away by her performance in the R4 program with competing designers. apad | apad
27/8/2017 01:32 | That link is blocked where I am hazl. Since it seems to be about the company Animal Care it probably isn't of personal interest, but perhaps something else of interest to me was mentioned? Good to see FENR gaining some traction. I am hoping it will do even better come results in November. Year end is this Thursday. Elsewhere we are coming into gold and silver season so with good fortune we will see strength in precious metals towards the end of the year. | lauders
26/8/2017 18:45 | quite fair from Justin Urquhart I thought ...the video interview. | hazl
26/8/2017 18:26 | For what its worth I like very low debt and high return on assets. | thelongandtheshortandthetall
26/8/2017 17:22 | Sorry I'm being contradictory at the moment but with the best intentions ;) When will this bull market end? Does it matter if there is enough time to make serious hay while the sun shines? | hydrus
26/8/2017 17:20 | Personally I like looking at FCF, ROE and quite simply revenue growth. | hydrus
26/8/2017 17:18 | APAD I am not sure it's a metric that tells you that much. How do you know the company is not underinvesting? Monster beverages is an example of a company that '100 bagged' after it significantly increased number of employees in their sales department. The per employee ratio wouldn't have looked great but their revenue, profits and cashflow rocketed. | hydrus
26/8/2017 17:13 | Thanks for the info, and your offer APAD. I'll take a look over the weekend and let you know how it goes. | mr. t
26/8/2017 13:36 | Does anyone use a metric like profit/employee or eps/employee! I used to use this metric but seem to have dropped it - largely because I was comparing across companies rather than in one company over the years. I suppose it depends on how easy it is to access the data. I think I might start to record free cash flow per employee. Any views? Just listened to R4 money program on pensions. What a load of propaganda! A pension is a promise, often devalued, and administered by companies that skim off all the cream. I'm amazed that the radio escaped unscathed. apad | apad
26/8/2017 12:58 | Mr. T I used to use Excel, which worked well for a while, but then became a complete pain. I now use Google Sheets. =INDEX(GoogleFinance www.gcflearnfree.org I download a .pdf as a backup. Downloading as Excel on the Mac is not good, but it might be in Windows. If you decide to go that way I can let you have a sanitised version of my spreadsheet via your email through private messages. It has been straightforward and problem free. apad | apad
26/8/2017 12:30 | Hi APAD, regarding a spreadsheet - how do you automatically download latest share prices into your spreadsheet? I'm looking to set something up for my portfolio so any advice you have is much appreciated. | mr. t
26/8/2017 10:16 | APAD I did that this morning too - madness setting in at an early age ! (ISH) | panic investor
26/8/2017 08:54 | Fallen in love with the IDEA, red? Thanks for pointing out where the messages button is - doh! Hydrus, most commentators talk about WPP as indicative of the overall economy. Doesn't make it true of course. The effect of social media, might moderate it as a bellweather. apad | apad
25/8/2017 21:51 | FFX - comfortable staying away from it. Still don't get the placing size and impossible to judge the acquisition. Plenty of other good companies which I can understand so why bother? | hydrus
25/8/2017 21:35 | Red did you read WPP results as company specific issues or a bellweather for the economy? I don't follow larger companies but know you do. Not to worry if you don't have a view on it. | hydrus
25/8/2017 21:34 | IDEA Buying at 86.50p before lunch. He who dares Rodney. red | redartbmud

25/8/2017 19:46 | Mod. I sometimes get a pop-up saying I have a message. But I can't see how to access messages without the pop-up. Embarrassing or what! apad | apad
25/8/2017 19:35 | www.ukvalueinvestor. My comment: Excellent articles and a good writing style - most enjoyable. Reading this one I noticed, again, that investing is presented as primarily an accounting, or balance sheet exercise (except for the brands comment). My own approach starts from a totally different viewpoint (which doesn't negate the points here). Toe exemplify. Why would anybody buy a supermarket or bank? One can stand on a street corner and point at several competing examples. Sure, if your timing is right you can make money, but the risk of getting your timing wrong is not worth it. Why would anybody buy an insurance company - their accounts are indecipherable and there are lots of them? Sure, if your timing is right you can make money, but the risk of getting your timing wrong is not worth it. Why would anybody buy a company that has huge contracts at low margins? The risk of getting it wrong is just not worth it. Grouping like with like and then applying your list I do see as sensible. But, putting together, say HLMA and BP doesn't seem at all sensible to me. apad | apad
25/8/2017 19:18 | Apad, I have sent you a pm | modform
25/8/2017 18:31 | I remember when VOD was new they raised so much money in the placings that the institutions made no real profit for years, red. PRV still on its way down the dip. FFX ferociously strong post the discounted placing. There is an awful lot of institutional confidence it seems. IDEA 7% above the price I would have paid yesterday. apad | apad |
