02/1/2020 17:39 | FT comment Tullow Oil shares tumbled on Thursday after the FTSE 250 explorer announced drilling results in South America for an offshore oil well that analysts suggest is unlikely to be commercialised. The oil and gas group’s share price fell as much as 20 per cent shortly after the open in London after Tullow said the amount of oil discovered at its Carapa-1 well, off Guyana, was less than it had anticipated. The losses narrowed to a 7 per cent decline. Tullow emphasised that the results suggested the Cretaceous rock formation, which is one of the most promising areas for exploration, extended into its licensing area. The region, which contains ExxonMobil’s major Stabroek block of wells, is similar to the oil-rich area off west Africa, which was connected to South America until roughly the early Cretaceous period about 130m years ago. However, net pay — the thickness of the oil reservoir and one of the key factors in determining whether a well is likely to be commercialised — was below Tullow’s pre-drill forecasts. “While net pay and reservoir development at this location are below our pre-drill estimates, we are encouraged to find good-quality oil, which proves the extension of the prolific Cretaceous play into our acreage,” said Mark MacFarlane, Tullow’s chief operating officer. Al Stanton, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said that given the low net pay he did not expect the discovery to be declared commercial. Similarly, Job Langbroek, an analyst at Davy stockbrokers, described the oil quality as “very acceptable” but said the reservoir thickness was “suboptimal and not commercial”. Thursday’s results are another blow to the company’s Guyanese operations after it said last November that two other discoveries off the coast of the South American country contained heavy oil, prompting warnings that the projects would also be difficult to commercialise. They also come after a difficult 2019 for the group, which led to its stock price falling nearly 70 per cent during the year as it was repeatedly forced to cut its production outlook and parted ways with its chief executive and head of exploration. Guyana has emerged as one of the world’s most promising areas for offshore oil exploration following significant discoveries made by Exxon. The US energy major has discovered an estimated 6bn barrels equivalent of recoverable oil and gas since it started drilling in 2015. Tullow has drilled three wells over two licence areas off Guyana, covering about 7,000 square kilometres. The Carapa-1 well falls within the Kanuku block off the coast of Guyana, which is 37.5 per cent owned by Tullow. A further 37.5 per cent stake is held by the operator, Spain’s Repsol, and France’s Total owns the remaining 25 per cent. | ![]() xxnjr
02/1/2020 17:31 | Think the comparison was valid bootycall as APC/Algeria is predominately oil afaics. Anadarko’s International sales volume averaged 102,000 Bbl/d during the 4th quarter, representing a slight decrease from the prior quarter, largely driven by size and timing of liftings. The company’s portfolio in Algeria and Ghana continues to provide stable, high- margin, and Brent-levered oil production that generates significant free cash flow. Anadarko have always described Algeria & Ghana as 'High value oil', or words to that effect. | ![]() xxnjr
