03/7/2018 22:34 | I am sure there are economies of scale in the industry, but a company that already supplies all of the supermarkets with say Persil already has economy of scale with the amount they make. Own brand stuff might be different, ie the same stuff packaged for the two different own brands. Smaller suppliers here in the uk are already struggling with financial pressure from work place pensions and minimum wage, never mind brexit. Synergies should be found from within, good practices and efficiency --- these guys often make more margin than the supplier on the products. | 1carus

03/7/2018 09:41 | Tesco ‘risks’ price war with Carrefour co-operation, says Hargreaves The purchasing alliance between Tesco (TSCO) and French supermarket giant Carrefour (CARR.PA) makes sense but risks kick-starting a new supermarket price war which could damage both companies and hurt shareholders, says Hargreaves Lansdown. Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket, has agreed with Carrefour to negotiate better terms from major suppliers such as Unilever (ULVR), Nestle (NESN.S), Procter & Gamble (PG.N) and Danone (DANO.PA) for the next three years. The move is designed to drive down prices and is in response to the growing threat from Amazon, discounters such as Aldi and Lidl and the combined might of Sainsbury’s proposed merger with Asda. Analyst Laith Khalaf said a ‘price war is great news for consumers, but it’s tinged with risk for shareholders’. ‘In theory, the big supermarkets can use greater firepower in the supply chains to lower prices, drive more sales, and perhaps even keep a bit more margin for themselves,’ he said. ‘However, the risk is that a tit-for-tat price war spirals out of control, and ends up lowering profit margins across the country. Challenging trading conditions have sparked a wave of reinvention in the UK supermarket sector, and this new partnership between Tesco and Carrefour is yet another stage in that process.’ Investors gave the news a lukewarm reception on Monday and Tesco shares softened 0.6p to 256p. | philanderer
