The above may be of general interest but does not involve Tesco directly. The property had in the past been sold by Tesco to L & G who in turn have sold it on to another third party. This will have no effect on Tesco's cash flow.

This is what both Tesco and Sainsburys have been doing over the past few years, sale and lease back.

On the other hand Morriosn's still own over 70% of the Freeholds to their supermarkets.

This now means instead of owning the Freehold, Tesco now has to pay £2.7mln per year to lease back their supermarket.

Thank you.

If only my mastery of trivia extended to share price movements! Alas I sold my Tesco at 230 expecting a pull back. O Tempora! O Mores! Less haste next time.

Off topic display of obscure trivia.

Square glass bottles occupy less space in a carton/crate/case but are inherently more difficult to manufacture and need to be made of thicker glass to accommodate the stress which occurs at the corners. They tend to incur more breakages during manufacture and are more difficult for automated handling. Hence they tend to be more expensive, heavier and have bigger carbon footprints than their rounded counterparts.

Back in the 19th and early 20th century, gin which was destined for export to distant shores was bottled in square shaped bottles which fitted neatly into sectioned crates and maximised space utilisation. This gin - often low quality and targetted at the bottom end of the market came to be known as "square face gin". I've got one of those bottles in my study.

Long before that ships used to serve food on square shaped pewter plates which fitted into a raised grid which divided the mess room table into square shaped slots. That stopped the plates sliding around the table as the ship rolled and pitched in the waves. This gave rise to the expression "a square meal" which is still used today.

Albert, Tetra paks, as you say, are lighter and do not waste space between them because of their relatively square nature -- square bottles perhaps!

Superb move.

Now if we could get rid of plastic bottles, return to glass, have a deposit that'd encourage youngsters to go collecting, we'd make a large impact on the bloody fly tipping and huge amounts of waste in our country parks...

I think there used to be sell by, best before, and used by. The only one that counts is used by the rest are distraction. Used by will still appear on prepared prepack veg and fruit you buy in the refrigerated sections. I think it will only apply to ambient packs of peppers, carrots, bananas and the like.

"Tesco is to shut its loss-making website, Tesco Direct, putting 500 jobs at risk. The supermarket said that after carrying out a review of the non-food website, Tesco Direct will cease trading on July 9.

In addition, Tesco intends to close a fulfilment centre at Fenny Lock in Milton Keynes, which handles orders for the site".
