Shares in Tate & Lyle (TATE) were up more than 4 per cent this morning after the ingredients maker reported a 23 per cent increase in pre-tax profits to £286m in the year to March, despite a 2 per cent fall in sales to £2.7bn.

The group announced three programmes to “accelerate business performance”, including targeted cost savings, new product development, and a focus on certain areas like beverages and soups.

Anton Brink, an analyst at broker Kepler Cheuvreux, said the results met expectations but that earnings quality was disappointing because they were boosted by favourable commodity prices that might not be repeated. But investors were impressed enough to send Tate & Lyle’s shares up 5.6% to 643.2p at 09:05 BST.

Nick Hampton, who took over as chief executive in April, said: “Tate & Lyle delivered another year of progress, with good profit and cash delivery. Profit increased in all businesses. The group remains in a strong financial position, increasingly well positioned to address growing consumer demand for healthier diets with less sugar, calories and fat and more fibre.”

Hampton announced three initiatives he said would improve performance. Tate & Lyle will concentrate its efforts on beverages, dairy, and soups, sauces and dressings, develop new products and target $100m of productivity gains over the next four years, he said.

Solid looking numbers , the adjusted EPS of 50p keeps the dividend well enough covered. Only one way from here with the sp? Except for Events of course....
