I’m starting to think a weak trading statement might be around the next corner, either NAFTA talks and the uncertainty holding this back, maybe Russia sanctions not really knowing the percentage off sales there, but it could be that line in the last report about investing for the future referring to low growth. I’d have have expected some bounce back from the falls in the last twelve months, this is very up and down on a yearly basis but it has a strong balance sheet, just a very dull stock to hold at the current time. I remember Rexam, got bored and sold just before the offer!!

I see Trump has said today he's holding off on tariffs for steel and aluminum (sic) with Mexico and Canada while NAFTA talks ongoing. Tariffs will apply everywhere else.

Let's hope all this ultimately translates to the P&L.
They certainly can't be accused of short termism with multiple investments
to hopefully drive longer term growth.

Trump links steel tariff to new Nafta deal

Donald Trump has indicated he could abandon his steel tariff if other countries agreed to trade changes as his allies cleared the way for a possible change of mind.

The US president said on Monday that the tariffs could “come off” if Canada and Mexico agreed to “fair” changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement [Nafta], which is being renegotiated. It came as Wilbur Ross, the US commerce secretary, declined to rule out a change in stance from Mr Trump.

Mr Trump insisted he was “100 per cent” not “backing down” on his initial threat but appeared to be using it to secure more fundamental Nafta reforms.

Trump resumed his now daily trade war and tariff tweetstorm, blasting on Twitter that “we have large trade deficits with Mexico and Canada. NAFTA, which is under renegotiation right now, has been a bad deal for U.S.A. Massive relocation of companies & jobs." Specifically, the president added that "Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed."

Trump also warned Canada that it “must treat our farmers much better. Highly restrictive.”

Hi Phil, there is another way of looking at this. If Trump is now picking
fights with the EU, China etc, a continuation of NAFTA becomes more important.
That is admittedly an optimistic take ).

'Trump could have doomed North American free trade deal'


The future of the North American Free Trade Agreement is even more in doubt after President Trump said he would slap tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from every country.
The NAFTA trade talks were in their seventh round when Trump made the announcement Thursday, and they are now expected to be extended beyond the eighth and final scheduled round.
NAFTA negotiators were believed to have been making progress, albeit slow, but the tariffs drew angry responses from U.S. allies and retaliating tariffs from the European Union.





'US ambassador to Mexico resigns amid strained relations between the two countries'


The US Ambassador to Mexico has announced she will leave her post in May amid rising tensions over the border wall and the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).

Roberta Jacobson has been in the position for a little under two years and her resignation comes in the wake of several US State Department and Trump administration departures.

“This decision is all the more difficult because of my profound belief in the importance of the U.S.-Mexico relationship and knowledge that it is at a crucial moment,” Ms Jacobson wrote in her resignation letter.

Where is the takeover interest, Javed Ahmed has trashed the share price before leaving, and personally this company needs to be swallowed, thing is there are not too many takers, supposedly it has been strengthened and re-organised for the future, as the last statement purposefully stated but then why the price fall. I suspect that any interest will come from left side, but food ingredients not the most exciting arena, but hopes eternal that either they grow, how I do not know, or an opportunistic bid will emerge from the Far East!

Off course I am focusing only upon the agriculture sector, and the ramifications for Tate were fructose syrup be vulnerable to no agreement being reached, or punitive duties be placed upon corn based products!
