As well as being results day at Arris, today is also the final date for receipt of comments regarding the Brocade takeover by Broadcom, which has a knock-on effect to the acquisition of RUCKUS by ARRIS. Maybe we will receive news later today or tomorrow.

From the Seeking Alpha transcript of the Comcast call, some hints about what Cable Communications might be continuing to spend money on as the initial X1-rollout heads towards saturation over the next year or two. I hope Arris is in the frame to pick up a decent proportion of xFi and Docsis 3.1 kit:

We're offering gigabit speeds with our deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 and plan to have this technology available to the majority of our homes passed by year-end. And in addition, we recently launched xFi, a new home WiFi platform that gives customers the fastest speeds, the best WiFi coverage and ultimate control in their homes, making WiFi an even better experience. As Brian mentioned, we have a long runway for growth in adding broadband customers."

Comcast announced results today:



Extract:

Capital Expenditures increased 2.5% to $2.3 billion in the second quarter of 2017. Cable Communications’ capital expenditures increased 4.0% to $2.0 billion in the second quarter of 2017, reflecting a higher level of investment in scalable infrastructure to increase network capacity and increased investment in line extensions, partially offset by a decrease in spending on customer premise equipment. Cable capital expenditures represented 14.9% of Cable revenue in the second quarter of 2017 compared to 15.1% in last year’s second quarter. NBCUniversal’s capital expenditures of $338 million decreased 6.1%, reflecting continued investment at Theme Parks more than offset by the timing of real estate and infrastructure spending.

For the six months ended June 30, 2017, capital expenditures increased 6.0% to $4.4 billion compared to 2016. Cable Communications' capital expenditures increased 8.1% to $3.7 billion and represented 14.4% of Cable revenue compared to 14.0% in 2016. NBCUniversal's capital expenditures of $623 million decreased 4.8% for the first six months of 2017.

Perhaps the market should have been less lazy about preparing for Technicolor's results but that is too much to ever hope for yet the reason why those who are even slightly bothered to invest time in knowledge can deserve returns.

I have a MONITOR sheet on this web site and I noticed that the position of ARRIS and BROADCOM had moved from the NASDAQ section to the INDICES section.

I deleted both entries and tried again to load them into the sheet - however, it only showed "ARRIS Group" and "ARRIS Holdings Inc.".

I then Googled them and found a path to this that I didn't know existed but I found very interesting:

I thought that some of you also might not know that this facility was available.
I hope that it is also useful to you.

I thought I had done really well about 25 years ago.

I bought Pace shares for 26p, and they went up to 80p, and I sold the lot, and bought a car.

They then went up to over £13, but I didn't have any...

And then they went down to 13p...

So I did it again.

I no longer have any interest in Pace, but on one day - well it was embarrassing..I was slagging off my bank, cos they caused me to lose £500...and I hadn't even noticed the change in Pace's share price.

I of course realised - all this was like monopoly money - you win some you lose some - but the most important thing to realise, is to realise that all this stuff is transient...and it is incredibly easy to go seriously negative...

But no one can take the fun that our kids had travelling all over much of the world - and learning to do the most exciting things in a state of complete innocence...

Even I started learning to dive - in the most beautiful place in the world. Both my kids were like fish.

If you've got it -particularly when you weren't expecting it - sell you shares, maybe build an extension - and take you wife and kids and friends on holiday - several times a year.

Just go for it.

Don't waste it - and don't spend all your time staring at a computer screen (unless in my case - well I had to do it for my job) The Share stuff was just a distraction from the reality of getting the important stuff to work.

I'm still here.

I'm a Grandad now and he's upstairs in his cot.

Despite everything that has gone wrong, I can't ask for more than that.

My lovely wife is on her way up north to spend a few days with her mum.

She will be back on Thursday.

I did go to some of the AGM's and asked questions but I never had any inside information...except seeing the products under development.
