01/6/2017 22:47 | Regarding the Nagra Kudelski complaint to the ITC Patent US 6345389 seems to patent what Siri and a whole bunch of cloud based applications do when they take input from a user (speech / handwriting) and hand off the analogue to digital conversion to a server that returns the plain text for further processing. This was filed in 1998 so it may not have been obvious back then. I'm curious how this patent stands against any other cloud computing patents. Patent US 7028327 seems to be quite applicable to all those interactive applications that want to put some annoying pop-up onto the screen when all you want to do is just watch some TV. I've seen demonstrations but is anyone really doing this or making money from this. Patent US 7725720 looks very relevant to the kind of home set-up where there is a gateway / DVR and various other devices around the home (mini-STBs / tablets) where users want to view content transcoded or recorded by the gateway, and the content has to be re-encrypted for local redistribution. I wouldn't want to comment more as there is a lot I don't know about security and more I don't know about security patents. Outside of the US the Virgin/Gemstar ruling may be relevant to some of these patents | mbhesms
01/6/2017 22:12 | I wouldn't describe myself as any kind of expert or even knowledgeable on these kind of patent issues. The best I can offer is some plausible hand waving. The patents quoted are both entitled "Interactive television program guide with remote access". In my limited experience the network operator owns the user interface and programme guide software as they want to be able to keep it independent of the hardware it runs on and consequentially independent of who supplied the hardware. I have also been aware of a network operator indemnifying a hardware manufacturer against such patent litigation and liabilities as applied to EPG related patents. Anything that costs Comcast money will of course mean it has less money to but things from Arris. In summary, with my very limited knowledge, I would not expect this ruling to directly affect Arris but a large payout by Comcast may have an indirect effect. | mbhesms
01/6/2017 19:59 | Hi Alex,Yes, I knew about the TiVo software in Pace/Arris boxes, but I think this case relates to the Rovi suit prior to taking over TiVo. What did you make of Kudelski/Nagra? There's been a fair bit written about it, & it looked quite concerning to me as it affects X1. | amphiprion
01/6/2017 19:44 | 1carus "can't really see this going south from here for a while" How long have you been investing in pace/arris? Aren't we all conditioned to expect sudden reversals by now? | 1gw
01/6/2017 19:17 | The case was against Comcast. Arris (Pace) had an agreement with TiVo where Pace supplied TiVo software in Pace boxes for some of their clients. I don't know the full details but perhaps MBHESMS could enlighten us. He is more expert in this matter. | alexmcdonald
01/6/2017 18:47 | Does anyone have an opinion as to how this could impact Arris?http://www.mul | amphiprion
01/6/2017 18:04 | Alex, can't really see this going south from here for a while. But the usual noise might trigger a stop loss at 28.00. I might hold off before setting that. By my calcs, at the current exchange rate $29 looks like about £4.60. | 1carus

30/5/2017 08:17 | Record-Breaking Life-Size Lego Caravan on Display A life-size caravan which holds the Guinness World Record as ‘the largest caravan built with interlocking plastic bricks’ has gone on public display in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire, England. Built by 12 model makers using 215,158 Lego bricks, this creation may use plastic components from the toy box but does almost everything a real caravan can do, with electric lights, running water and even seats that fold into a bed. The brick brilliance continues inside, with incredible details such as eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes cooking in a frying pan on the two-hob burner, a vase full of flowers on the table, toothbrushes and a tube of toothpaste by the sink, a milk carton in the fridge and even a complete chess set. Measuring 3.6 meters long, 2.2 meters tall and weighing in at 1200kg, the project took over two months to build and more than 1,000 man-hours. Layers of Lego bricks were built on top of a conventional caravan chassis, proving how strong and versatile the plastic pieces can be. Only standard off-the-shelf Lego pieces were used, with no custom-made components. This was partially offset by lower wired switch and router revenue, due in part to Broadcom's planned divestiture of Brocade's IP Networking business. | mbhesms

26/5/2017 10:49 | 1carus - it is a 'no-brainer' because the Arris performance although down last quarter is basically on the up year on year plus with the imminent acquisition of Ruckus, the price is going to continue to rise. I have recently started looking at Ruckus products and I am a bit excited. Have a look at their web-site within Brocade, which in turn is about to be acquired by Broadcom. | alexmcdonald
26/5/2017 00:15 | Alex, strategy! I am a halfwit that just happened to buy into pic for all the wrong reasons.... after 2000 and partially because I saw it as a young man first time around and didn't act, missing the boat the first time. I could possibly see that stbs had a way to run despite all the cord cutting concerns. Blindly stuck with this share through the management and hard disc ups and downs. Bought a shed load of them at around 30p after 2008 I think to average down so that I might one day recover my losses. I have been extreemly lucky in timing my sells over the last 3 to 4 years, not quite selleng at the top but very close. My buy average is about 120 and my sell around 470.... so cant grumble. As for strategy... just held and bided my time. A lot of money tied up for a long time. Quad bagging almost... but over 12+ years... I suppose amazing compared to bank rates. Pure luck though! As to your 28 dollar call , I doff my cap to you sir. | 1carus
