An archaeological dig on the Menemonee Reservation in Wisconsin yielded a clay pot. The pot was dated to 800 years ago and contained seeds. Some of the seeds were planted to see if 800 year old seeds were viable. An ancient squash was the result.

Farthest you can get from civilization: Tristan da Cunha, South Atlantic

Tristan da Cunha is about the farthest you can get from civilization without actually leaving the planet. This archipelago at the bottom of the world is a British Overseas Territory and has the distinction of being the remotest inhabited island on Earth. Located in the South Atlantic, the archipelago is adrift in the middle of the ocean, 1,750 miles from South Africa and 2,088 miles from South America. Tristan is the only island where people live (with a population of about 260) – Nightingale Island, Inaccessible Island and Gough Island are all uninhabited wildlife reserves, says the Tristan da Cunha website. Visitors willing to make the long trek down to the island can see the rockhopper penguins that adorn the islands’ shores, as well as the endangered spectacled petrel and the fur seals that roll from rocky shore into the Atlantic Ocean, says Pew Environment News.

Hi mbhesms,

Thanks for your input which is much appreciated. It's a tricky one, & I can quite see where you are coming from as there are loads of litigation cases going on in the background. I guess I had just wondered whether this was something out of the ordinary particularly as it related primarily to X1, & the Tivo share price reacted in the way that it did. Maybe I will try & chill out about it a little. I did note though that Comcast ended their relationship with Nagra (I think) a few months ago in relation to this so it must be something fairly significant or I suspect they would have just signed a licence agreement.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Alex,

Regarding the recent Arris press release I can find nothing via google matching 'decryption' 'CAL' 'ITASS' 'certification'.

Does anyone have any idea what this relates to?

Hi Amphiprion,

Patent litigation seems to be part of business as usual in the technology sector. It is all mixed in with normal deal making and the cost of doing business.

Nagra have worked with the Pace part of Arris for many years and together they have made a lot of money. Originally the setup would have been Pace made the STBs, someone else made the middleware (e.g. OpenTV, Liberate) and someone else made the CA (content security) such as NDS or Nagra. Now Nagra own OpenTV the relationships are not so orthogonal, but Nagra still will want to make money working closely with Arris while getting good value from their OpenTV acquisition.

I don't see this being anything like the TiVo versus Dish/Echostar spat which cost the losers a lot of money ($500m), despite which EchoStar's share price has doubled since then. Not cause and effect but I think it shows how these skirmishes compare to the big battles for business deals.

This series is shot in Paris suburbs by Rémy Soubanère, far from glamorous parties. Nothing is staged here, but sun never comes up…

Just wondering whether anyone has a view on this Kudelski/Nagra/Comcast/Arris/X1/ Patent situation? I have pondered it for some time, but just don't have the depth of understanding to form a firm opinion on it, & as to whether this is something we should be concerned about coming over the horizon?

In combination with the fact that I haven't seen any director put his hand in his pocket & buy shares for as long as I can remember I can't help but wonder whether there is something of concern here?

Solar Egg in Kiruna

In response to a commission from Riksbyggen, Bigert & Bergström have created a sculptural chamber in the form of an egg-shaped sauna that has just been installed at Luossabacken in Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost town.

Tony it's good to hear from you again but I do not agree with your assessment of 'Money Tree' Corbin.
If you watched the 'Leaders' debate you would have witnessed a bun fight with no substance and the reason Teresa May decided to debate like she did last night.

I am looking forward to five years of Tory government so that the country can get out of the massive debt left by the last Labour fiasco.

The above is the troll that sits in front of Lillehammer Family Park in Norway.

In honor of South African politician Nelson Mandela and to mark the 50th anniversary of his arrest by the apartheid police, artist Marco Cianfanelli was commissioned to produce a sculpture to stand in Howick, South Africa, on the exact unassuming spot that he was captured. The installation consists of 50 steel columns which symbolise the prison bars that held him for 27 years. When viewed from the right angle, the quietly powerful sculpture forms a profile portrait of Mandela.

These are called blackout panels.

Underground Town: Coober Pedy, Australia

The town of Coober Pedy still exists and is home to more than 1,600 residents. It is referred to as the opal capital of the world because it produces more opal than anywhere else on Earth. The town consists of homes called “dugouts,” which were built underground to combat the unbearable heat on the surface and to keep their babies safe from dingoes and Australians.

I almost completely gave up this share trading sh1t about 10 years ago..Yes I still have a lot of shares in the company I retired from in 2004. I now no longer have any shares in Pace, but they were a massive help. You do not know some of the days I had. One day my Pace shares went up £165,000 quid and another day i lost £200,000 on woolworths. I did realise that what I was doing was complete madnesss - so I gave it up..It was incredibly hard getting rid of my 1000 Pace shares -which I had on paper -just so that they would send me everything on paper..and they did..

The company I worked for still sends me a Pension every month...its almost enough to get by...

and I still have the same lovely wife, and I am still in love with her...and I posted this today ...

Make of it what you will...I never lied..sometimes I got a bit enthusiastic..Don't worry we are O.K. (my grandson is going to have a brother or sister -he has been splashing in the puddles today during a thunderstorm)

I don't want to know what a Tory Government or anyone can't do. I don't want to hear any more about bombs and destruction...

I want to know what any goverment or any person can do...

(no i can't do that - of course you can its easy - even i have done that and i am not a bricklayer - but i did help my brother build his extension to his house - and he designed it too. It's still there...and that is when i was 16 years old. As a reward he let me have a ride on his Triumph Tiger 650 just after he had rebored it)

Alex,1gw. Stuck to my plan and sold half my holding, 1300 shares at $28.90 ish. It might not be the best price we see this year, but I had to sell this year some time and I think there is maybe more profit to be had elsewhere. The rest I will hold for another couple of years.( assuming the trade goes Through!)
