14/3/2024 15:03 | And will that get the pot-holes fixed? | aleman
14/3/2024 14:59 | Just had the bill for our business rates for the next year, £44K which is up from £33K last year. So good to see how much is being done to help small businesses! Corporation tax up by 30%, rates up by 33%, minimum wage up by yet another 10%. Glad I won't be doing this for too much longer and I certainly wouldn't bother setting up a business with employees today! | mrphil
14/3/2024 14:45 | BHP left, I'm hoping RIO leave for Australia too.We might see BP. & SHEL move to the US | gateside
14/3/2024 14:20 | US Treasuries suggest around 2.25% of rate cuts in the next 2 years (to 3-3.25%). You'd think they'd want to support markets and economies/encourage investment by making some gradual reductions early. Instead we have companies delisting, nothing much coming to market and general difficulty for companies in need of fresh capital so they end up having to cut costs more. We've seen the following in the UK recently from several sources but here we also see the private sector in the US suggesting there should be more rate cuts than the Fed is currently suggesting we will get - in this case two weeks ago, the suggestion was cuts of just over 3% to 2.25% at the end of 2025. The longer they wait, the more cuts the private sector seems to be suggesting will be needed? -5 | aleman
14/3/2024 13:48 | ‘There is no chance that the Fed cuts rates next week,’ Brown Brothers Harriman analysts commented. ‘Odds of a May cut are now below 15% while odds of a June cut are below 75%. Furthermore, markets are basically back to matching the Fed’s outlook for three cuts this year. The momentum in the US economy remains pretty strong, but a lot can happen between now and May or June that could impact boost those odds.’ | philanderer
14/3/2024 13:39 | Afternoon everyone. Had to go into town to assist my brother do a couple of bank transfers to pay all the Voluntary NI contributions he was allowed, to entitle him to the full Basic State Pension. I see Glencore is thinking of delisting from London and going to list in Australia. Everybody's getting really fed up with the LSE | philanderer
14/3/2024 12:13 | It's nice to dream Mr Phil LOL. Portfolio blue at presevnt +0.35% wonder if it will stay there after DOW opens, | malcolm caton
14/3/2024 11:50 | Gateside, one of these days the ftse will catch up and get to where it should be, then we can all enjoy retirement! 😁 | mrphil
14/3/2024 09:09 | Morning All. "Interesting" meeting at the Town Council last night. Quite a few residents turned up to voice their concerns over the mast, and the fact that only three residents received the consultation letter from the company planning to build it. Turns out they do have to apply for full planning permission as it's a monster 20mtr unit with several supporting cabinets. I am hopeful we can stop it as there are definitely more suitable sites nearby but well away from houses. Of course that will cost them more but if it's the right thing to do.... Good results from IPF this morning allaying any fears. | mrphil
14/3/2024 06:52 | Good Morning. As the forecast is dry and more importantly, we are relieved of school runs etc, we're off to have a wander around the Leadenhall Market area of London. XDs to take 6.12 points today. | skinny
13/3/2024 18:33 | I finished down 0.35% - financials, SAE & CPI all turning the screw. No rain or sun here at all today. wllm - you may well get your wish on ABDN - gawd knows what's going on there! | skinny
13/3/2024 18:02 | Portfolio -0.14% mostly caused by VOD. MKS the other main faller. Big gain for AAL almost negating the falls. Much warmer but still cloudy 15C Sainsbury's this morning very busy. Not many offers around and you definitely need a nectar card. Finished sanding down the garage doors ready for an undercoat. Stopped using Chrome for browsing just one thing after the other with it, changed to Microsoft Edge, and it's whizzing at the moment. Usually take my BP reading a couple of times a week. I usually sit down and take it, wait a minute take it again, then take a third after a couple more minutes and use that one. Stirfry chicken in the wok tonight with oyster sauce, noodles, veg and a bottle of red. | philanderer
13/3/2024 17:41 | Gold trying for another new Sterling high but not quite made it. Just over £1700. | aleman
13/3/2024 17:28 | -0.05% folio, [FTSE All-Share +0.25%] BA., BERI, BRWM, GLEN, BHP, the mining sector well represented. JSG, GSF, PHNX, CPI, fallers. Decent day albeit cloudy, 13C fron 10C. Always thought my super BP monitor readings after a long walk were a good healthy signal, I now know not necessarily. Following a recent prescription review I have an MOT health check blood tests etc arranged by my surgery coming up shortly I was planning to walk there anyway. | blueliner
13/3/2024 17:24 | MrP - BP monitor at the ready, feel you might need it. On the upside you should get a good signal. | carpingtris
13/3/2024 17:19 | Been through that, MrP. The only way you'll get it withdrawn is if enough people complain it's an eyesore, is somehow incongruous, or they will cause problems servicing it (vans blocking traffic, etc.). I got the feeling the main driver was just the number that object. We were probably going to get about 60 objections by the deadline but they suddenly withdrew when it got to 30+. Something like 90%+ get passed so you'll need to get well organised and then have a bit of luck. (Note that, once a small mast is through, it's very hard to object to a bigger one later replacing it.) We've upgraded the abandoned communal space they wanted for the site since the council had let it deteriorate. We clubbed together with time and money and now have a neat, benched seating area with weeded, tidy shrubs and pretty flower beds to welcome people into the village and admire from the main outgoing bus stop. I push my mower down the road to cut the grass there every time I do my front lawn. A group of 10 or 12 decided it was a good idea. 3 or 4 of us have implemented it, though maybe 6 or 7 have contributed financially. I suppose that's about what you'd expect from any voluntary gig. I wonder how long can we keep it up. | aleman
13/3/2024 17:15 | I'm up +0.042% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.309%). Best rises: UU. +1.59%, BP. +1.58% and BATS +1.23%. Worst falls: VOD -4.01%, ADM -3.04% and LGEN -1.21%. I gather VOD fell because of a share issue in India. No news on Admiral, but that's my heaviest share, so pulled me back. Less so with VOD, second lightest share. Did a load of washing this morning, hung it out with a shaft of sunlight appearing, then it began with fine drizzle. I decided to leave it out in the stiff breeze and it was pretty well dry by 4pm. Looks like the drizzle has returned. DF | deanforester
13/3/2024 17:06 | Bit of a shocker for me today with IPF falling off a cliff late on so I'm guessing there is some unpleasant news due. -0.41% IPF, SAE & WJG Off to a Town Council meeting tonight, they are proposing to stick a 20mtr mobile phone mast on the verge just across the road from our house! | mrphil
13/3/2024 17:02 | A bit of a nothing day for me for most of today - AV/KITW/MRL my two largest holdings hit new YTD highs, whilst VLX/CPI/KETL hit new lows. CPI has been a real disaster since their results. A last minute drop in several gave me a down day -0.3% | dr biotech
13/3/2024 17:00 | What a poor week I'm having, I find these the worst when the market rises but my portfolio falls, and not just a little bit. I'm down on the week so far -1.8%, VOD and ABDN 2 of the worst performers, only 2 rose today, 15 fallers. With RECI and ABDN going xd tomorrow I think I will be tumbling down the standings. wllm :) | wllmherk
13/3/2024 16:54 | Pretty much flat on day. -0.005% Best risers FNX,ENT,EMG,HAT,BGO, Worst fallers JD.,ULTP.CPI,RTO.ZOO I decided in the end to swallow the large loss on RGL,used the proceeds to average down on CLIG. | malcolm caton
13/3/2024 16:50 | Sounds par for the course, MrP. Mine was a bit high for my age but dropped after cleaning the car to marginally below normal. I went for a little run to see what that did and it went marginally lower still. Not sure which one I'm supposed to send in but it does not look like there's much problem if it's above normal sometimes and below normal others. I think mine was always slightly highish when checked at a younger age, even when I was super fit while doing gym, cycling, football and circuits, with a resting pulse well under 50. I've always been told it was ok in the past. Even now, my resting pulse is usually around 55 or so, and max around 190 so that suggests pretty good cardiovascular fitness. Do they worry too much about a few numbers? (No.3 was 99/70 which is probably what one might expect for a footballing young one but what caught my eye was his 54 pulse straight from walking in the door. Smaller usually means higher pulse and his age range is suggested as 60 to 100.) Down a few £s. The early brightness never returned, though it has not rained and it has felt mild all day, despite the breeze. 14.9C after 10.3C Roast turkey joint and puds for dinner. | aleman
13/3/2024 14:45 | My BP was pretty high for a while immediately following my back operation a couple of years ago. That's precisely the time when the GP's are supposed to monitor it and act accordingly, but I even sent the readings in to the surgery as you simply couldn't get an appointment full stop at that time. I did get a phone call from the GP - 3 weeks later!!! asking me what I wanted him to do! By then, my BP had settled down a bit so we just ignored it! | mrphil
13/3/2024 12:52 | I'm on the 7th day of a week of BP monitoring.. look to be pretty consistent. I have what's been termed as 'white coat syndrome' I think.. as my BP goes up each time it's checked in a GP environment but not if I do it within my own setting. Tbh might just speak volumes about GP surgery in general and state of the place which elevates my BP. I'll be looking to hand my BP results to the GP later this week. | carpingtris |
