13/3/2024 12:52 | I'm on the 7th day of a week of BP monitoring.. look to be pretty consistent. I have what's been termed as 'white coat syndrome' I think.. as my BP goes up each time it's checked in a GP environment but not if I do it within my own setting. Tbh might just speak volumes about GP surgery in general and state of the place which elevates my BP. I'll be looking to hand my BP results to the GP later this week. | carpingtris
13/3/2024 12:44 | Afternoon, A red morning, only good risers at present are DARK,FNX,EMG,HAT,mos Called in at tescos to pick up things unavalible on the online order, the shop was not very busy. BP Iv'e had a home monitor for a while,I have to admit that my BP does not go down with exercise rather the reverse,I also find that the first reading taken is on most occasions higher than subsequet ones, | malcolm caton
13/3/2024 11:59 | Europe's industrial output for January, compared to January 2023, was -6.7%. So no sign of recession easing in that major indicator. Rather, it suggests it is continuing and is quite a significant one. I'll bear that in mind, MrP. Thanks. You may recall I replaced my favoured sunflower spread with butter and/or olive oil when grain prices rocketed and manufacturers substituted palm oil in almost all of them to make them taste unpleasant - and banged prices up what seemed far more than necessary. I noticed this week that Flora Original had been repackaged. When I checked, the palm oil has been dropped and it tastes much better and similar enough to how it used to. It is now rape, sunflower, linseed and coconut, in that order. It's 21% saturates out of 70% fat - so enough not to make toast soggy and hopefully healthier than butter at 50%+ saturates, so I'll be dropping the latter even though its prices have eased. Hopefully, that's a positive end to the matter now. My doc's is chasing me for a blood pressure reading, saying I've not had it checked for a few years, which is not true. The various arms of the NHS just don't talk to each other. I've bought a blood pressure monitor, though, and was surprised to find the readings have varied considerably. I've found it drops immediately after exercise, when I thought it might be the other way around, but these articles confirm that: I suppose high heart rate during exercise must expand blood vessels so they flow easier for a while afterwards before shrinking back over time. It might be worth remembering that lack of short-term exercise in the run-up to a doctor's appointment could lead to a short-term higher reading and vice versa. | aleman
13/3/2024 09:59 | Morning All. Aleman, might be worth you trying Vicks First Defence. I usually take a dose if anyone close is suffering and I've managed to escape most of the bugs. Whether it's that or I am just lucky I'm not sure! My lot just about blue at the moment but still being hit with IPF which is probably languishing due to delayed results. | mrphil
13/3/2024 09:56 | The Office for National Statistics has confirmed that the boost to the health sector in January was driven by private health providers. So it seems January's positive GDP was down to a surge in private medical care as waiting lists extended in the NHS? So a disastrous performance from the NHS might have interrupted the recession and this gets reported as good news? | aleman
13/3/2024 09:15 | Morning everyone. Definitely a touch warmer, dry and cloudy. Portfolio red. | philanderer
13/3/2024 08:47 | Oh, and just to add to last night's gloom, I've started with my third cold bug of the season. It's just a sore throat at the moment. The weekly Covid and flu report suggests almost everything has died down now apart from rhinovirus so hopefully it's just a bit of a head cold and the better weather (ahem) will see it off quickly. | aleman
13/3/2024 08:42 | Good Morning. No sun in the forecast, but also no rain, with a high of 14C. | skinny
13/3/2024 08:20 | Good morning. Warm, bright and nearly dry. I can even see a patch of blue in the distance. Could Spring finally start today? A bad loss for the Bantams but credit to a very spirited display from FGR, after they beat the top form team, Walsall, in their last game. I'm pretty sure they won't go down. Steve Cotterill looks to be doing a fine job there which is good to see after significant illness. I think our season is over. The ground emptied after their second goal to a great deal of criticism after the weekend announcement that our season ticket prices for next year have been raised 26%. (They've been raised slightly one way or another every year since the current Chairman and CEO arrived.) I'll be dropping one of the kids tickets as a result. No.1 is not really interested and is old enough he can do his own thing if mum wants a rest now. I would have renewed it if prices had been held. My guess is 15-20% will not renew after another misfiring year of questionable decisions and spin. Overall ticket revenue should be about the same but other commercial revenues - which are probably slightly higher - will tend to drop in line with bums on seats, so our overall revenue looks set to fall next year and maybe put pressure on the playing budget. The Chairman is not going to get the daft price he is asking to sell the club. Since he seems to be showing no day to day interest whatsoever, I wish he would move on. | aleman
12/3/2024 20:53 | Disappointing day considering the indices, up a mere +0.11%, my gainers were equal in number to my fallers and 2 of my larger holdings SUPR and VOD had a poor day. Beautiful town St Andrews, my wife and I visit it often as it's only a 40min drive from my house. Really busy in the Summer months with tourists, especially Americans who love the golf history. The Old Course Hotel is pretty special too, if you've not already done so you should treat your wife to a stay there Phil :) wllm :) | wllmherk
12/3/2024 19:20 | Hmmmmm - looking at the numbers above, I assume I'll be bottom this week. I finished down 0.17% - Utilities and RGL -30%. At least its stopped raining here. | skinny
12/3/2024 18:49 | I'm up +0.492% on the day today (FTSE100 +1.030%). Best rises: RIO +2.17%, PSON +2.12% and BATS +2.05%. Worst falls: SSE -1.92%, NG. -1.75% and UU. -1.28%. Don't know what pushed the FTSE up so much. I obviously don't have them. Utilities all fell. A wet morning. DF | deanforester
12/3/2024 18:06 | Portfolio +0.73% , gainers HILS, ABF, BATS, IMI, MKS, IMI, RIO and SMIN.....faller NG. Much warmer but rain nearly all day 13C. Managed a late walk when the rain stopped. Mainly indoor housework today. Had the slow cooker on this afternoon with cubed shin beef, carrots, swede and onions. Dumplings to add later . Bottle of red to myself tonight as my wife is in London for a night out with friends she was with at The University of St Andrews . | philanderer
12/3/2024 17:44 | Had some big fallers which took the edge off things but still managed +0.26% thanks to LLOY, AV. & BP. | mrphil
12/3/2024 17:03 | In spite of RGL tanking +0.7% on the day Best risers HAT,FNX,RR.,DARK,ULT Only large fallers RGL.CLIG,CPI. Rain stopped for the miment, more forecast. | malcolm caton
12/3/2024 16:55 | +0.41% folio, exceeding yesterdays fall but nowhere near the indices. [FTSE All-Share +0.92%] BA., GSF, RIO, MNG, PHNX, leading gainers. CLIG, SSE, JSG, main fallers. Cloudy dry, 53F according to Ventusky | blueliner
12/3/2024 16:45 | +0.2%. Brightened up at lunch time after another shower and, even though the sun never actually came out, it felt much warmer and nearly dried things out again. 12.8C after 3.5C | aleman
12/3/2024 16:37 | Decent enough day for me +0.5% but I hope some did better given the gain in the FTSE100 Bit of a strange day, 17 blues to 10 reds. Of those 3 hit new YTD highs, and 7 hit YTD lows. The recent positive run has been uneven. AV/MEGP my biggest winner NG only significant faller | dr biotech
12/3/2024 11:48 | Just shows how completely pointless some of these "sanctions" are, other than political posturing. | mrphil
12/3/2024 11:23 | Morning everyone. Big effort to get out of bed with this weather going on. Pouring down and very dark. Skinny, only one thing better than a Full English is a Full Scottish or even a Full Irish where you get chips with it :-) They can put their smart meters where the sun doesn't shine ;-) Miners perking up and good results from HILS | philanderer
12/3/2024 10:43 | Morning . Sorry about RGL Gents, not a holder. re Smart Meters, similiar, bomarded with emails/through the post etc. A story in various press organs that involves BBC next year? turning off a R4 signsl used by electricity co's that would affect 900,000 households who are on cheaper elec Economy 7 and 10 tariffs with older meters, and they would be charged the day rate on all their usage. Often there is no gas supply to these customers. Answer: be forced to agree to have a smart meter then hey presto those cheaper tariffs will be available. Is it true or false.... | blueliner
12/3/2024 10:41 | MrP - What could possibly go wrong! | skinny
12/3/2024 10:35 | There will have to be a similar trend in mortgage provisions when banks report. The value of outstanding mortgage balances with arrears increased by 9.2% from the previous quarter, to £20.3 billion, and was 50.3% higher than a year earlier (Chart 6). The proportion of the total loan balances with arrears, relative to all outstanding mortgage balances, increased on the quarter from 1.12% to 1.23%, the highest since 2016 Q4. | aleman
12/3/2024 10:34 | ldavis, totally agree with you regarding smart meters, you shouldn't be forced to have one if you don't want one. We have avoided having a gas smart meter as I see no benefit, but for electricity it's a different matter as the smart meter gives me the option of using their best EV tariff so (with the help of solar + batteries) just about all of our electricity is at the rate of only 7.5p per kWh. For those of you (like me) that dislike large screens in cars.... | mrphil
12/3/2024 09:49 | After loads of emails and texts trying to get me to get smart meters installed EDF have just phoned me. I pointed out that although there is a legal requirement on then to install smart meters, there is no legal requirement on me to have one. There is no actual benefit to me having them, even if they do work properly - but plenty of inconvenience having to take time off work and clear out the cupboard for them to be able to replace the existing meters. The only argument she could come up with was it ensured accurate billing; to which my response was I already get accurate billing as I submit my readings every month when they ask for them. They used to only ask for them evety 6 months and ignore them if I tried to submit at other times but obviously as part of their push to install smart meters they have got more persistent. Since I am on fixed monthly direct debits they only actually need readings when the rates change or in time for the annual review - though my annual energy consumption has been fairly consistent over the last 30 years, other than a decrease in Gas consumption when the old boiler was replaced. | ldavis |
