15/3/2024 10:25 | The whole system is a shambles and I can't ever see it changing now - its too entrenched. If I have a free hour or two, I'll put down some thoughts/facts and real experiences!! | skinny
15/3/2024 10:21 | Global population growth is still too high but has slowed since Covid. The UK birthrate is already problematically far too low, in line with some other developed nations like Japan, hence high immigration, a solution which can bring other issues. York's birthrate is ridiculously low and schools are having problems managing falling intake - not that anybody sees lower taxes! | aleman
15/3/2024 10:06 | I remember reading a while ago the issue with child benefit in particular was to give the middle classes a feeling that they were getting something back from the state. I remember that we used to get it for a while even though we were both close to the top of the limit. We just gave put it into the kids savings account. Its a bit of an odd one, I've always thought if you can't afford children don't have them. We are overpopulated as a country and as a planet. But the whole thing was a bit stupid, we are getting what was some of our own money back via a bit of wasteful admin. Looks like a red day for me, but still early. | dr biotech
15/3/2024 09:56 | Don't disagree at all, MrP. The tax system is getting far too complex and too many people lost in an expensive administrative nightmare of benefits. That money and effort could be far more productive elsewhere. Last of our daffodils are coming out now. Winter cherries are starting to put on a good show. Magnolias are all bursting their buds. Some litle bits of aubrieta are starting to blossom. It's all nice to see but is slightly late and would look much cheerier in a bit of sun. Unfortunately, weeds seem to be starting to enjoy the warmer damp. | aleman
15/3/2024 09:55 | Aleman, I hear what you say and agree to a certain extent, but surely a household on £60-£80K doesn't need benefits? malcolm, Dahlias will be potted soon, I sowed a few Cosmos & Gaillardia seeds last night and need to do the Tagetes and Cornflowers. | mrphil
15/3/2024 09:45 | A red start again! Hazy sunshine and a gentle breeze, may dry out the grass to allow a cut,if I feel like it.A lot of Dahlias and lily bulbs to pot up first. | malcolm caton
15/3/2024 09:20 | Universal Credit will be paying the lower paid ones (of a couple) to stay in low paid work rather than be unemployed and work in the black economy, like the old days. That's probably why (experimental new method) unemployment is surprisingly low but in-work benefits have gone through £100bn per year? (Univeral Credit is paid to 38% of workers at a cost of £60bn.) Some might say it's mass underemployment instead of mass unemployment. I suppose it is better than people being unemployed but I don't suppose it does much to stop economic migrants and fake employment and fradulent benefit claims in some small businesses. I suspect the more complex it gets, the harder it is for honest claimants and the easier for fraudulent ones? Good morning. Grey, damp and shares down a bit. Nothing new there then! | aleman
15/3/2024 09:07 | Read an article last night about the daft way child allowance works based on the income of one person in the household rather than overall household income. So one person earning more than £60K and the other earning nothing loses childcare but if both earn £50K then that's fine, they get to keep it - totally bonkers! They have now increased the figure but not corrected the system, and it looks like they have opened up another discrepancy regarding benefits, but one thing I noted was the fact they were talking about losing Universal Credit if the couple earn between £60-£80K. What on earth are we doing paying benefits to someone on that amount of money? No wonder we're in the mess we are in! | mrphil
15/3/2024 08:16 | Morning All. 3/7 for me this week, all guesses. Skinny, I thought the Blueberries we sometimes get in Tesco were pretty big, but you'd need to do your exercises before lifting that monster! wllm, obviously wasn't great news at VOD as the shares are up! CUSN not looking good for me, but at least it's only a small holding. | mrphil
15/3/2024 07:45 | VOD announced share buyback and slashing of the dividend by 50%. Many have been calling for the dividend to be cut, but, I fear this could be my worst week of the year as VOD is a significant holding. wllm :) | wllmherk
15/3/2024 06:37 | Morning. 3/7,Knew 2 | malcolm caton
15/3/2024 06:25 | Good Morning. 3/7. You don't need many of these with your morning yoghurt! | skinny
14/3/2024 21:23 | Fabulous 5-0 win from the Hammers.Onto the Quarter Finals of the Europa League we march :) | gateside
14/3/2024 19:11 | Just back from Wetherspoons. I'm down -0.123% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.373%). Worst falls: SGRO -3.80% XD, HLN -1.81% XD and RIO -1.27%. Best rises: IGG +3.05%, S32 +2.53% and ADM +1.25%. They seemed to like IGG's Q3 statement. It has been fine all day until just before sunset when we had a brief shower. I nearly did some gardening, but thought better of it. DF | deanforester
14/3/2024 17:25 | -0.1%. Mild and grey all day again. (Isn't it always? It's hard to believe how little there sun there's been - this week, this month, this winter, the last 9 months.) Very brief light rain in the afternoon. I managed to cut the grass at the front before it happened even though it was still a touch damp and clogging a bit. I say grass. It looks to be about 70% moss now and makes it harder to mow since the blade "grounds" a bit. I'm raking it a bit before cutting to see if I can slowly bring that down. I might have to resort to treating it in patches. It will look terrible if I do it all at once. I'd rather avoid going there. Just drier weather would help! 15.0C after 10.3C. | aleman
14/3/2024 17:19 | I finished down 0.36%, PPS -14.29%, NWS & ABDN both XD. | skinny
14/3/2024 17:14 | Spent most of the day with a gain four times higher than I ended with, but at least it was positive I guess! +0.17% IPF, AV. & BP. wllm, yes you are dead right, we seem to be just working our butts off to give it all to the tax man. I console myself with the fact I am keeping 20 people in a job but sometimes I'm not sure that's appreciated! | mrphil
14/3/2024 17:10 | Portfolio -0.44% nearly all red especially AAL and SGRO both xd but miles more down than their dividends . WTB continues to fall off a cliff. BAG and BP the only decent risers. Mainly cloudy but still warmer 15C . Got the top coat paint for the garage doors. So after sanding down, priming and undercoating I read on the back of today's tin that it can be used straight on exterior bare wood no need for a primer or undercoat !! Spaghetti and meatballs in a tomato sauce (with a couple of chilies) . Plus a few glasses of red. | philanderer
14/3/2024 17:08 | -0.27% folio, [FTSE All-Share -0.37%] Lost it's way after lunch STAB(xd), BHP, RECI(xd),HICL, ENSI, worst fallers. PLUS, GSF, CLIG, CSN, best of a poor field. Max 14C from 9C, overcast and threatening something at the moment. | blueliner
14/3/2024 17:02 | Anothe basically flat day. +0.005% Dark,BGO,ADF.HBR.SNR best risers SOHO(xd)RIO,RR.,FEVR A pleasent sunny day but grass not dried out enough to cut, | malcolm caton
14/3/2024 16:46 | After looking quite strong at lunchtime, things tailed off quite a lot for me. CREI looks like it may win its takeover for API and that caused their shares to fall. My biggest loser today. AV/CREO/VLX doing just enough to keep me the right side of the line +0.07% (xd's cost me 0.1% to, but that will be added back in due course). | dr biotech
14/3/2024 16:34 | MrP, I'm shocked at the level of tax your business has to pay, the 10% rise in the minimum wage is also nuts when interest rates are high to curb spending. It must make you wonder what the point is of running a business. Evidence, if it were needed, that we are not being governed by a Conservative Government. Another down day day for me, not looking forward to the end of week figures. wllm :) | wllmherk
14/3/2024 16:00 | MrP , that's scandalous and as for that business rate, unbelievable ! I thought my water rates going up +16% was bad enough and that's so they can dump even more untreated sewage in the rivers. And all I get is an email asking me if I've thought about buying a water butt to save water !!! This country is going right down the pan. | philanderer
14/3/2024 15:53 | Just discovered it looks like that 20m phone mast doesn't need planning permission after all, thanks to recent legislation. So the council happily take nearly £3K in council tax because we have a fairly nice house in a nice area but think nothing of allowing this monstrosity to be built almost in our front garden! | mrphil
14/3/2024 15:32 | What do you think?! | mrphil |
